The best Disney movies of the decade have set the bar pretty high for the 2020s. Were taking a look at Disney movies, both live-action and animated, as well as Pixar movies, released between 2010 and 2019. The 2000s were a mixed bag for the Mouse, but the 2010s brought the magic back full-force. MsMojo ranks the best Disney movies of the decade. Whats your favorite Disney movie of the decade?

How did Tangled not make it past 5, and why'd Frozen rank higher? Tangled has a much more focused story and character chemistry that makes you care a lot about how Rapunzel and Eugene's relationship develop. Gothel wants to live forever after discovering the magic flower. After its taken to heal the dying queen, Rapunzel is born infused with its healing power. To celebrate the queens recovery and birth of Rapunzel, a lantern festival is held. Gothel sneaks into Rapunzels room and discovers the power is in her hair, but wont work if cut, so she kidnaps her. To discourage Rapunzel from ever leaving the tower Gothel raises her in, she always emphasizes the dangers of the world. The kingdom annually holds the festival on her birthday to hopefully guide her back home. Since no one likes being secluded, and because Rapunzels curious about the lanterns, she asks for a special kind of paint that will take three days to get. That way she has enough time to leave and return without Gothel knowing. Theres also a thief that finds the entrance to the tower when escaping arrest for stealing a royal crown. When he hides in the tower, Rapunzel knocks him out and refuses to free him and give him back the crown unless he takes her to see the source of the lanterns. Along their journey they have experiences that encourage them to tell more about each other and develop a romance. All the emotional moments and motivations are logically set up.
Tangled isn't cliche just for being a love story. It's plenty original. Eugene's self awareness of Disney cliches is subtle and makes more clever humor than in Frozen. None of the two lead characters fall in love until they learn more about each other throughout their journey. They dont get married until years after the films events, as stated by Eugene at the end. The princess helps the man as much as he helps her. The female saves the male, which is to me more feminist then just not needing a man for help. The moral is about trying to fulfill dreams and that theres always more dreams to have afterward, which is a very inspiring and more applicable message people can relate to than Frozen.
Most of why Frozen is so popular is because of the song Let it Go. They advertised that song before the movie released. Frozen isnt that unique. The theme of sisterly love was done much better in Lilo and Stitch and various Disney animated movies already waited for the female lead get married or fall in love until they got to know the man better. Mulan and Tangled did this much better too.
I have no problem that many people love this movie, but I dont get why so many people gush over how brilliant they think it is despite its clumsy writing. There was no benefit to changing Annas memory. That only confuses her about why Elsa is so introverted. It sets up unnecessary drama with the two during the castles public reopening. There was no foreshadowing for Hans being a villain despite fans wanting to interpret certain lines from Love is An Open Door as such. Theres no evidence thats what those lines indicated. He has an affectionate look on his face when under the boat looking at Anna when no one saw him. He had no reason to act differently there if he didnt love her. Then he tries to calm Elsa after seeing her try to push a guard to his death off the balcony, which makes no sense for her because shes been trying to avoid hurting people the entire time before that. Then soon after she stops, Hans moves a trapped guards hand to aim at the chandelier. That couldnt be an accident because Hans glances in its direction before aiming there. He wants Elsa dead so he can take her place, so it makes no sense for him to play nice and ruin a good chance to let her die by the guard shooting her, only to try to kill her a different way using the same thing. Ive seen people say that Hans was changed to a villain late in the making, because Let it Go sounded too positive of a song for Elsa as a villain. Other sources say he wasnt even thought of until they changed Elsas character. Some sources say he was in earlier scripts but was already meant to be a surprise villain. Could some give me some more definitive evidence for what the first plan for Hans was?
When Anna and her friends try to get Elsa to come home, she creates a snow monster to throw them out, knowing the risk of its aggression because later she sees him fighting the guards outside. Thats not a risk someone trying to avoid hurting people would take just to kick out someone you love.
She hated isolation but then is happy when she isolated herself enough to sing like shes triumphed over her problem, and has no plan to survive in the wild. Shes avoiding hurting people but theres no reason she should be happy that she still thinks shes a threat that should have minimal human contact.
One message from the movie is that marrying someone you just met is foolish, but then the rock trolls immediately try to get Anna and Kristof married when they see them.
Whats especially odd to me is that professional reviewers were more positive of Frozen than Tangled. Rotten Tomatoess general consensus was: While far from Disney's greatest film, Tangled is a visually stunning, thoroughly entertaining addition to the studio's classic animated canon. Why did they feel like saying its far from Disney's greatest film. Its one of their best written ones. The same sites consensus for Frozen was: Beautifully animated, smartly written, and stocked with singalong songs, Frozen adds another worthy entry to the Disney canon. Why no criticism for the much more flawed film? Scott Mendelson on Forbes said: Frozen is both a declaration of Disney's renewed cultural relevance and a reaffirmation of Disney coming to terms with its own legacy and its own identity. It's also a just plain terrific bit of family entertainment. How could so many people be so ignorant of how major the flaws in Frozen are and how well everything works in Tangled? Its like most of the reviewers for these movies were children. Tangled restored Disneys popularity, not Frozen

Personally, I see these 3 movies as the top/game-changer animated movies of the 2010s for Disney AND deserve (or already have) sequels:
WRECK-IT RALPH (2012) - Introducing a video-game/arcade world with a villain-turned hero twist
FROZEN (2013) - Introducing some of the greatest and/or most popular musical hits since THE LION KING, alongside one of the best comic reliefs (i. e. Olaf the snowman)
ZOOTOPIA (2016) - Introducing one of the best animated anthropomorphic animal worlds, including all the comedy that comes from animal stereotypes, alongside amazingly accurate analogies to issues and topics in the real world.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. :)

I was excited you put Wreck-it ralph on the list beacause its one of my favorites. I wish you would've put The sequel on the list because a liked it Yeah i know it has some flaws but I don't let them get to me. The best part about Ralph breaks the internet is where Vanellope meets The Disney princesses when she met them I was surprised. Which led to lovely scene where the princesses were in their new looks and hanning out with vanellope which very cute. And I was surprised again when at the end of the film The princesses unite and work together to save ralph which was heroic hence why I loved it It would've been great to see Vanellope with the princesses again.

So first of all everybody hated Frozen! I didn't mind it but everybody hated it and they said '' IF YOU LIKE IT UR A CHILD'' so I said I disliked the movie. Then Frozen 2 came out I desperately wanted to see it but now my family believes I hate Frozen 2 too. so I cant just watch it on Disney + in the living room? And its out of theaters so. yeah no Frozen 2: c

Tangles should be higher than Frozen. Even though Frozen made more money, Tangled has better writing, much more emotional scenes (mainly with the parents) and more. And plus, the Tangled universe doesn't stop here. There is a lot more story to the movie explored in Tangled the Series and Rupunzel's Tangled Adventure

I'm not much of a Disney/Pixar movies fan, but I've seen both frozen, movies and I think the second is better than the first, it's more interesting, has better character development and depth, and as great of a soundtrack, I think it deserves be on the list
reply

I can confirm Frozen 2 deserves its spot on this list after seeing it yesterday! I'll say this, though; only time will tell if people like it better than the first one, but I've got to give Frozen 1 credit for creating a new generation of Disney fans: )

Toy Story 3 definitely deserved the #1 spot. I like Toy Story 4, but the ending left me very unsatisfied. The third movie had that perfect emotional intensity and was a fitting end to the original trilogy. Easily in my top 3 Disney movies.

Wreck It Ralph is my fave although I'm glad Toy story 3 took the number 1 spot. I totally expected it to be Frozen and I'm even more surprised that in the comments more people didn't complain about it not being number 1.

I remember my dad and sister went to see big hero six but I stayed home because I thought it was for boys (I was 6 btw) but I regretted that. I saw it later and its still my favorite Disney movie it was just the best
reply

I wish they made a movie where the stereotype 'villain' is the hero. You would guess villains are pale, skinny, scratched up, ugly and the stereotype 'hero' is the villain pretty, independent, and confident
