No. Just no. No no no, and no. Will Smith is another face you wanna AVOID seeing in every other movie for a change, just like Mark wahlberg Ben Affleck and Tom cruise. They're everywhere, like germs. Just when you think you get them all outta your house, you turn around and BOOM! They come right back, and there's no superstar repellant spray strong enough to keep them out. Give the spotlight to a new face for a change, or a long forgotten star. And that song is just a copy of the original with some Will smithey stuff thrown in There, it's really nothing special. There is no good replacement for robin Williams, but if I had to choose, I'd say Dan Castellaneta. He did a great job in the Aladdin sequel in my opinion. And Seth McFarlane is another great voice actor that could have been great in that role, but I'm sure they wanted someone that looked the part. And they did a fair job at making him look right, but that's where the buck stops.

i think i can explain the problem a good chunk of people had with Will Smith's Genie. It's the level of energy Robin Williams brought to the role. He was so energetic that literally anybody else could put their best energy into it and still wouldn't come close to Robin because he was just that off the walls. If most people can put up to a 10/10 in energy, Robin was putting in a 100/10. Not even NPH would have come close. So the result is it kinda feels like Will's genie is moving in slow motion in comparison. He's really not. Will is putting in the energy and the love but he just isn't Robin and a good chunk of people just couldn't get past it. That being said they weren't trying to get close to Robin's performance and that was the right call.

This has been forever, but I wanna chime in on my two cents, whenever Will Smith got to be himself and give us HIS version of the Genie, it was brilliant, but then you have moments where he tries to copy that random humor that Robin Williams just did so much better and those usually fall flat. I do not blame Will for this, he HAS the acting chops, I just think that the producers tried to bring too much of Robin Williams into the Genie and constantly forgot that Will Smith ISN'T Robin Williams, they should have allowed Will to keep improvising and not strong arm jokes that arguably were only made funny back in the original because of Robin's improv and delivery.
reply

They should have cast James Monroe Iglehart, the one who originated the Genie role on Broadway. He was incredible, and his vocal theatrics FAR surpass anything Will Smith could ever do on his best day. Actually, ANY of the Broadway Genies would have been a massive upgrade.
That said, I dont think Will Smith was what ruined this new version of Aladdin. The whole movie felt rushed, poorly written, and just. really dumbed down. Its strange, but I feel like the animated version had so much more heart and emotional depth than the live action remake.

reply

Remake should never have been made. I didn't even bother watching it because just the commercials alone for it where enough to make me cringe so hard. And then when I was at the store amd came across the genie doll that sings Prince Ali it was literally the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song just with different words. This movie just seemed like it wasn't worth wasting an hour of my life on or my money. I'd rather watch the orgy scene from Sausage Party on repeat than watch this.

Since I see pretty much nothing but hate for my man will, I guess I'll state m unpopular opinion and say I liked Will BETTER as the genie, and I've gone back and watched the original for comparison.
The production is simply better, no arguing that, and as much as I love Robin William's voices he did NOT bring in the singing talent Will did with this piece. They each have their own merits, but overall I like Will Smith's version better, it really just sounds better.

reply

The problem I have is no one notices is that the belt at the end of the Will Smith version is that it's one of Robin Williams' takes for the original.
I don't know if Disney did that as an homage of sorts for Robin, but yeah. I'm not crazy, that's Robin hitting the belt at the end. Unless they did some insane audio magic to get Will Smith to sound like him.

reply

I think its unfair to say that Will rehearsed it too much and Robin williams was more free with it. Sure i like robins genie more but i really like wills too. Just because someone did better than the other doesnt mean we should give it a chance. Also robin williams was more of a voice actor than Will. He had more experience. Its unfair to say that
reply

Well, when you do a comparison of Be Prepared I can already see you saying that the animated version will be better since the live action version is far from anything like the original. Man, I still don't get why they TOTOALLY wasted the potential of a live action version of the greatest villain song ever
reply

Will smith didnt replicate robins genie he just played his own genie not trying to be the old one as if he tried to be Robert William it wouldnt hes anywhere as good or genuine overall Robert William genies felt like him and wills felt like his
reply

Before the release, I KNEW the success of the movie would hinge on how well they did this song, and I was not disappointed.
I do wish they had done a video for the OTHER version of this song from the credits, though.

reply

Mister Aladdin, sir. Have a wish or two or three. I'm on the job, you big nabob. You ain't never had a friend, never had a friend, you ain't. Never had a friend, never had a friend! You ain't NEVER HAD A FRIEND LIIIKE MEEE
reply

Why on earth did they not cast The Rock for the genie? He sings better than Will Smith, imo. Robin Williams knocked the ball out of the park the first time, so whomever filled the Genie part had big shoes to fill.
reply

Is there any more Disney Stans or is this the only one? If you're going to do this much research I think it's a great idea for a series, you'll get more views for better-known songs. Also other translations?
reply

a funny thing. the dub in danish is done by an extremely talented actor/singer who did the entire thing in one single take and brought so much more energi into the genie than robin did (sorry)
reply

I like how Will's version, he doesn't get Aladdin's name till the middle of the song, and he plays on that when the line 'Mr (Man what's your name? Whatever) what will your pleasure be? '
reply

Plus a lot of robins a friend like me was
Ad-libbed he add those lines while he was singing. Could will smith do that? No he cant. Plus I hate his version with a passion.

reply

Very very great fun list I like it a lot and a lot of fun too great job mis mojo one of my very favorite list ever I like both of them and will Smith did a great job
reply

Aladdin 1992 is by far much better. All of the animated is so much better than the real life remakes. Disney has completely depressed me in their thought process.
reply

You can't have choreography as much for animation
Kda: exists
XDD great vid though! In my opinion tho, both Genies are just as awesome

reply

This video is going to start world war 3. I really dont think you can compare Robin Williams and Will Smith. I know I never do.
reply

I think this movie is really great to have too different versions of the songs play as the Genie will smith and Robin Williams
reply

i think they were both great but Will Smith just blew my mind on all songs in the new version. he really is the best!
reply

Robin Williams can never be replaced. Don't get me wrong, I like Will Smith, but I prefer the original genie thank you
reply

I honestly remember seeing a similar comparison earlier this year. it really cool comparing these scenes together!
reply

I think that we are lucky to have both Robin and Will as a Genie. They both did an awesome job on Genie.
