I'm going to sound so ignorant probably, but although I can't imagine how hard suffering racism must be (I'm brown skinned too so yes, I can make my point, I guess) I do understand sometimes why white peeps keep some distance from black peeps and see us sometimes as animals and that just contributes to keep dividing us. I went to USA and had the worst time dealing with lots of black dudes (men and women, specially Jamaicans. WHY ARE YOU SO ANGRYYY? And aggressive. oh my god. they're so dirty and troublesome when you were just minding your damn business. and women as well, just want to fight all the time. I seriously had a better time with the white peeps, they were really nice and well behaved so. although I know we don't have a oh goody history like them and It's easy to say they are fresher or more positive bc they never had to sweat it while our ancestors were treated terribly and our history just makes us so sad and full of hatred, I also don't think that still at this point we should be such aggressive people. There's a lot of racist people like there's a lot of generally idiotic people, that doesn't mean we shouldn't have respect for others. kindness and manners. I identify as black, I grew up in DR and I seriously can't tell you how many black or white friends I have bc that's just so irrelevant that we don't notice or occupy our minds thinking such nonsense. That's the world I aspire to live in. So sad that we're letting this divide us just bc of some white dude that centuries ago decided they should be superior and orchestrated this whole mess.

Number 7 was wrong. It's not that they fight allow women because they are women.
They simply had jobs that didn't need the meetings. I read somewhere else saying that the real story is that it was said they dont usually go and even by the movie and by original story she didn't really have to push to get into the meeting. The boss already was saying it's ok because there was nothing against it.
Like too much of this movie, a lot done wrong in pursuit of an agenda.
Ironically, it's the Democrats who were still pushing segregation in the 50s. But they don't want to talk about that.

Regarding the unnecessary white savior moment, while the bathroom scene didn't happen, it was white people who ended slavery in this country, and it is the only country that took a stand against slavery. As much as woke leftists try to rewrite history, that fact remains.
And only a racist would see that scene in those terms. Most of us see it as a man who saw how segregation was standing in the way of progress and acted upon it, no doubt seeing the errors in his own initial perceptions. Black or white, it should be a very warming and unifying scene to behold.

I appreciate that Hollywood has an artistic narrative to pull off, when real life seldom gives us simple story arcs with clear exposition. Toying with the timeline to make things fit for a viewer is justified because entertainment is the motive more than information. However, in a historic film we have to be mindful of how we explain the past. Those old John Ford movies with the cowboys and Indians tropes were just entertainment but did lasting damage to how Native Americans were viewed and still are viewed today.

Jim Parson and Katherine Dunst's characters were important and 'real' in the sense that they were personifications of the racism that black people would have experienced all around, even if from random white people during different times. They were the embodiment of that obstacle. In telling a story one is required to consolidate different people and events, in a very short amount of time, to clearly depict all the dynamics in play. Using these devices, such 'semi-fiction' tells more truth than a documentary.
reply

I actually think that the 'white savior' moment could be viewed a different way. It wasn't for racial issues that the character did it. He was simply pissed off that a racial issue made his team less efficient (he IS an engineer) and he set about fixing a problem that was wasting time.
He even said, 'Use any bathroom you want, preferably closer to your desk'. signaling that he didn't really do this for civil rights, but just to stop wasting time and talent(which is really the result of any racism.

Honestly I don't like the fact that Katherine who is suppose to be something of a role model or marker in black American history basically looks white. Like the only way you'd know for sure that she's African American is because of the darker complexion of her relatives. For all we know she could have had things a little easier because of her very light complexion. She's not very representative. And I think it kinda plays into colourism. I mean Katherine in the movie is of a darker complexion

I think the tear down of the sign was actually fairly accurate to portray the fact that they ended segregation in that facility 6 years prior to it being ended everywhere else. Clearly the women made a name for themselves and proved how important they were leading up to it. Sure its not accurate but the truth is just as heartfelt and gets across the same message it a much shorter and easier to digest portrayal of the 10 years leading up to them ending segregation in the facility.
reply

I get why one would make movies this inaccurate about events nobody knows how it really went down. But I will never accept this kind of inaccuracy about events that you could easily ask the people involved etc. This is BS and the last movie I watch about a real event. I would prefer watching a turtle fart for 5 hours. It was an okay fictional movie.
Edit: of course, respect to the ladies and their accomplishments. Unfortunately nobody knows how to tell their story

reply

Hollywood will always try to portray race baiting much like mainstream news. Consider CNN. It's not their narrative to report black on black or black on white crime however. It IS their narrative to report WHITE on black crime in today's world. No one considered taking down statues when Obama was president in fact it never crossed their minds to do so. But come Republicans time in office with Trump and they were ready to tear down Mount Rushmore.
reply

Yeah not sure I can agree. Just because segregation ended doesnt mean they didnt have to deal with racism. Lets say NASA really was colour blind, pun intended, they didnt live inside NASA. Ive worked in many inclusive and tolerant workplaces were I have dealt with plenty of race discrimination. I live in a tolerant area and still get told all sorts of racist comments even in 2023. Just saying.
reply

So, Hollywood magic just invented racism, colored bathrooms, invented the Kevin Costner character, and other things? Gee, and I thought this was a good movie. Too bad it's full of untruths and other other magic. Thanks Hollywood. You had the opportunity to tell the truth about three incredible women in the Space Program, and you blew it. No surprise.

As for what does it matter who does the right thing? Actually it does matter. Because if a black person does the right thing, hes arrested and labeled as being a rebel. But if a white person does the right thing hes awarded, commemorated, and seen as a hero. So, in white supremacy America, yes, it does matter whos portrayed as doing the right thing.
reply

How about Katherine did not speak in the manner the actress spoke in the film, she spoke standard English without the stereotypical lilt given in the movie. Also, Hollywood would have never cast an actress with the same features and skin color as Katherine Johnson. Katherine couldn't even have played herself: Oh no, she's not black enough.
reply

That the black characters are based on real people is good, but that all the main white characters are fantasies says a lot about the attitudes toward race in the 21st century. As aesthetically pleasing as Hidden Figures is to watch, it ultimately stays safe in propaganda land, where we can all cheer at our own superiority. Sigh.
reply

They contributed on the same level as the guy that out the decals on the ship itself. They virtually had nothing to do with the moon landing. In truth their job was to cross check math that a computer did and the math was in comparison to the rest of NASAs mathematics remedial. Its another agenda driven cash grab.
reply

So basically the real story is, a NASA employee that was a black woman did her job as a NASA employee and was really good at math. And there may have been something with the restrooms with some other girl she didn't really talk to. Rrrrriveting. Well at least we know why all the changes and fake scenarios were added.
reply

So funny that the point of coloured bathrooms was made into a big scene, why not the real story? It would have been conversations with white people sharing their feelings amongst themselves and when the rules changed there would have been a few awkward moments and maybe a couple of comments nothing so dramatic.
reply

This movie made segregation and racism a big part of the plot, and in real life it wasn't hardly a factor according to the women. This disappoints me because injecting racism in such an historically inaccurate way takes the spotlight off the real story that was ultimately not told in this movie.
reply

it could have done without the white savior moment with the restroom. i'm kinda sick of the whole white savior thing in based on a true story movies. cause it mostly isn't true to the degree they make it. also the racism they show in these movies isn't factually correct, they go way over the top.
reply

The meeting where Kathrine calculates Glenn's landing site is wrong! The lat/long co-ordinates stated in this scene would have put Col. Glenn landing on the western coastal plain of Columbia. Over 1300 miles south of a water landing in the Bahama Island group. Oops.
reply

White savior moment I am so done with this crap! If a white person does the right thing and fights for equal treatment, he or she is called a white savior! But if we do nothing, were racist KKK sympathizers. Whats it gonna be woke world? Can we do anything right?
reply

Awesome movie nevertheless. Sometimes, a little exaggeration of the truth (Unlike the tissue of lies told by both Donald douchebag Trump and George Catch me if you can Santos) and drama can make for a very compelling (not to mention. entertaining) story.
reply

This film is why it is better to see a documentary than a glammed up Hollywood movie. There are many examples of historical facts being manipulated to ensure a payday for the producers. Viewers believe the distorted screenplay is true to life and it is not.
reply

Lmao this movie was just race bating propaganda nothing more. I couldnt even set through this video so a snowball has a better chance in hell than me ever watching this bull shit. Peter Pan and never never land are more believable than this movie.
reply

Its still a good movie no matter how many things they got wrong, its really good and it tells a reason why, I do have to agree with you about the things they got wrong, but it still doesnt change the fact that this is a really good movie.
reply

Their breakthroughs and successes actually began earlier in their careers? Ironically, they were even more successful that the film portrays. So much progress, but as the Buffalo race shooting reminds us, some things never change.
reply

Such a phenomenal film in of itself. I honestly didn't expect to like it as much as I did, but the second I finished viewing it, I immediately added it onto my favorites.
It's absolutely worth the watch!

reply

well, the fact that systemic racism is still an issue in the US it was more than justified to pick up this topic in the movie.
guess what? racism is no fiction, especially in the Land of the free
