I don't think the cause of the girls' depression was unknown in Virgin Suicides. Their parents (mainly the mother) were VERY strict, overbearing, emotionally abusive, and literally put them in lockdown/isolation for months (even yanking them out of school to put them under 24/7 supervision. I remember one scene when the mom made Lux literally burn her favorite music records as punishment and left the poor girl in tears. And in the ending scene, the mom went on about how she only gave nothing but love to her girls and doesn't understand how they could have become depressed. Clearly, she was in denial or truly believes her actions were okay.
Along with being kept in the house literally 24/7 under the constant control of their mother for months, only being valued by the boys for their beauty and mystery aura, it's no wonder they became depressed and decided the only way to truly escape and be free was through death. And after losing their younger sister, grief likely compounded their choices as they only had each other. Of course, that's the whole point of the story. You don't TRULY know the concrete details and can only theorize the precise reason why the girls made the choice to kill themselves.
But, this much was clear if you ask me. There's no doubt their mother's overly strict and outright cold personality and keeping the girls in literal isolation for months was a major factor in their choice.

Seeing the picture, I am in the middle with pretty in pink.
I am a hardcore duckie and andie shipper. While I do understand peoples issues with duckie being the nice guy like Ted or a simp, i think he tried giving her her space and asked for advice about what he should do. He acted like a jerk a couple of times which was uncalled for, but I thunk he genuinely cared for her and wanted to make her happy.
Also, it is hard to hate a guy who best up the villain because he screwed up Andies life and Blaines. I felt like he was standing up for both of them.
However, I like the ending a bit more now. Blaine was in a complicated situation with his best friend and made a lousy mistake. He did not show up to the dance with anyone and was waiting for Andie.
I think I would have liked duckie/andie as wither end game or maybe a trasitionship (not a fling) and she reuniting with Blaine after college or something.
I am fighting with myself over this. Wish fulfillment or was Blaine the better option. There was love there.

Thirteen has always frustrated me! It was like basically my just like my story! But the ending was like did she get help and get her life together, move away and switch schools maybe moved with her dad, did she keep going the way she was! So many unanswered questions! Pretty in Pink I'm pretty sure she ended up with Duckie! That's what I think anyway, he was everything eventually most women want in their life partner. I ultimately think college would have broken her and Blaine up, just the class differences and Blaine being who he is.

Im a huge Hughes fan and I loved Pretty in Pink. Did Blane deserve a second chance? That was only in Andis heart to decide. But one thing the ending gets right is she is not in love with Ducky. She loves him as her best friend, but shes not in love with him. I wish Blane had stood up to Stef stronger somehow and earlier, but I was glad he grew up by the end. Maybe Andi and Ducky eventually fall in love at the same time with each other, but I think they remain friends for life.

Interesting note, in Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player Two he brings up the ending of Pretty In Pink. In the virtual world in the game, the Oasis, one of the worlds is knows as John Hughes world. Part of the quest in the book takes the protagonists to that world to set something right, and that is the ending of Pretty In Pink. According to the book, the original ending (Molly Ringwald's Andie ending up with Jon Cryer's Duckie) is the ending John Hughes wanted.

Was anyone else pissed off at the ending of 5 Feet Apart? Not sure how it didn't make the list, but it should have at least been an honorable mention.
SPOILER
Will puts together this whole elaborate display to break up with Stella
A. In front of her entire family/friends
B. RIGHT AFTER SHE HAS LUNG TRANSPLANT SURGERY.
I think it was meant to be played as an if you love someone, let them go moment, but it was so poorly executed.

I think I would've preferred Andie ending up with neither as well. Duckie needed to move on knowing that Andie just sees him as a friend and he'll find someone else. With Blaine, yeah, they'll never work out. They both will never be able to get through their insecurities about their life circumstances and what people think about them. Plus, their kiss at the end seems kind of uncomfortable. I think that's more about the actors than the characters though.

13s ending is really good its a representation of repeating cycles all over again because Tracy allowed herself to be heavily influenced by Evie all the things she has to go through as a teenager she puts to the back of her mind and ignores all the hard things she's trying to escape from only you can't do that hence why she has to repeat the school year why her mom discovers she cuts the its all like being on a merry/ground
reply

Thirteen is based on Nikki Reeds life when she was well 13 so she seems doing okay so that ending wasn't really that frustrating, Donnie Darko from my own interpretation of the movie is that he already died and the rest of the movie is his spirit or soul processing his death I mean there were hints (well for me) that he did not survive that accident
reply

Did people watch the virgin suicides properly its very clear as to why the girls are depressed and take there own lives in fact all of these movie endings are good apart from pretty in pink that did seem to wrap up way to quickly considering how detailed the rest of the movie is everything else on this list however I strongly disagree with
reply

I'm sorry, but while Evie is the antagonist of Thirteen, I don't feel bad for Tracy. I hate it when someone is so desperate for popularity that everything else from their dignity to their brains go out the window. I still like the movie, but I don't care for either of these characters.

I'm curious as to how often racers get unlawfully detained while overseas. The most memorable was Andre & Damon in Morocco (Season 3) where they wandered down the wrong alleyway. Some guy asked for their passports and told the cameraman to stop shooting. I legitimately afraid for them
reply

I remember when I saw pretty in pink and I kept thinking oh they are going to end up together then when I saw the ending I was like WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED. My mom and my stepdad were watching it with me and they immediately started laughing because they knew what happened
reply

Why would anyone think Andie should have ended up with Duckie? He had an unhealthy obsession with her. Besides, even if he had genuinely loved her, that wouldn't mean she was obligated to be with him. She didn't love him back in the same way. It has to be mutual.
reply

For 8, I think the protagonist would live, she just had to get out of the truck's way after pushing that girl out of the way. I mean, the protagonist still have enough time to save herself too, but she stood there instead of run away from the truck after pushing her.
reply

I will argue down anyone who thinks Andie and Duckie should've been endgame in the movie Pretty in Pink, just because he was the nice, overlooked friend does not mean she was obligated to like him back, I personally think she should've ended up with no one.

I'm actually glad that Andie didn't end up with Duckie, since he acted so entitled and obnoxious about her interest in Blaine, and didn't seem to care until the end that she just wasn't romantically interested in him.
reply

She always saw duckie as her friend, she did t have some eureka moment where she decides she loves him, some friendships are meant to be just that I agree tho she couldve also ended up alone, no harm there either!
reply

i love ambiguous endings with a passion so when it came to these movie endings, i liked them way more, and to be honest i never really realized till right now that people don't have the same opinion as me.
reply

Breakfast Club should be on here. That had the WORST pairings. One totally unrealistic and one a totally horrible example for young girls. Bender emotionally abused Clair the whole day.
reply

I loved Duckie, not sure he and Andie would have been a good romantic pairing. Kind of teen movie but the ending to My Sister's Keeper was disappointing, the book was so much better.
reply

Instead of complaining about the ending of call my by your name. Just go and read the sequel find me
Youll get closure and you can stop bringing the film up on EVERY list

reply

You missed the movie The Last American Virgin. I was so disappointed by that movie and really fell into a depression after watching it. That would have been my number one pick.
reply

But that ignores the sequel to American Graphitti where they go into those events from the end of the previous movie, but it wasn't as well received as the original
reply

I watched Before I Fall for a class field trip to the movie theater and I straight up told my classmates that that was the worst ending to a movie that I had ever seen.
reply

Totally agree with Teen Beach Movie 2! I always said what Laia did was selfish cause she knew changing the movie would change mac and Bradys world and did it anyways.
reply

The virgin suicides is one of my favorite movies. I love that it makes you stop and think about all of the times we glamorize the issues we should be helping.
reply

I hated the Teen Beach 2 ending
Between Brady & Mac not knowing each other & Wet Side Story just being changed in general, the ending was just awful

reply

Most of this list is just: how modern people are spoiled and can't handle the fact not all stories have happy endings, wether in fiction or real life
