These classic movies were HELL to shoot. For this list, well be looking at classic movie shoots that caused headaches, literal and metaphorical, for all involved. Our countdown includes The Exorcist, The Evil Dead, The Birds, and more! Do YOU think these movies were worth the pain it took to make them? Lodge a formal complaint in the comments!

Excellent list. I don't blame The Shining being put on the list since Kubrick was notorious for being a perfectionist. I would also add his final movie Eyes Wide Shut to this list. Honorable mentions: The Twilight Zone The Movie (there was a major accident that killed some of the cast, The African Queen (they had to endure a lot problems while filming in that climate) and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1939) (it was filmed in the summer with very hot temperatures so it took a toll on actor Charles Laughton because he was wearing heavy makeup and costumes for his character if Quasimodo.

The entire film Possession (1981) and that subway scene comes to mind. Actor Sam O'Neil said I call it the most extreme film I've ever made, in every possible respect, and he asked of us things I wouldn't and couldn't go to now. And I think I only just escaped that film with my sanity barely intact. And actress Isabelle Adjani attempted suicide and had to be institutionalized after method acting and that it took her several years to get over playing Anna.

The Revenant should of been on this list, Leonardo Dicapiro ate a real, raw bison liver, despite being a vegetarian. He filmed in below freezing temperatures, even going as far as filming a scene in a freezing cold river, and I'm half positive that he laid in a real aniaml carcass for warmth in one of the scenes. But, I'm not 100 percent sure about that last one. Either way, I think it should of at least received an Honorable Mention!

Another note from the Wizard of Oz was the fact that when Margaret Hamilton, who played the wicked witch from the West, disappeared through a trap door in Munchkinland she got a second degree burn on her face and a third degree burn on her hand when the fire shot up through the door.

Man. Shelly Duvall, went through absolute hell when filming The Shining. I mean back when first saw the movie I always complain about her performance as Wendy. But thanks to Dead Meat I understand and learn why Shelly Duvall was a emotional and a shrieking wreck during the film.

Kubrick was an ass when directing. He pushed Shelley Duvall hard. She had to do that knife scene over 100 times. Her hair was falling out, she cried in her dressing room, became so depressed she basically became a recluse. She is just now starting to get out in the public eye.

Fun fact: while making The Breakfast Club, the actor who played Carl enraged Emilio Estevez (who is actually a son of Martins) by jokingly saying that Martin Sheen almost died of a heart attack while filming Apocalypse Now!
reply

It's almost comical how difficult the production of _Apocalypse Now was. Aside from Martin Sheen's heart attack anyway. So much so, That I've seen more references to it's production than to the movie itself.

Poor Shelley Duvall, she must have been positively traumatised by all that Kubrick put her through at the sake of her mental health. Kudos to her for sticking with the project the entire way through.

The Shining being a move that was hell to shoot can be summed up in two words: Stanley Kubrick. Stephen King hated the movie and so did I. Kubrick simply butchered the material.

Very very great epic list I like it a lot very very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever the wizard of oz is still one of the very best movies ever

No Texas chainsaw massacre? One of the people on set was a Vietnam veteran, and he said he would rather experience Vietnam again then experience that shoot again.
reply

So a lot of inaccuracies about wizard of oz. The snow was KNOWN to not be asbestos and Judy garland never said that she was assaulted. Just saying.
reply

It's hard watching The Shining, The Birds, and The Wizard of Oz now, knowing what Shelley, Tippi, and Judy went through behind the scenes. Those poor women.
reply

Geez. I knew that making movies is stressful but pushing the actors and using certain props that can be hazardousI wonder if this is still ongoing today
reply

Ive also heard about Tobe Hooper on the set of Texas Chainsaw Massacre apparently cutting actors to make them fear for their safety during the shoot

Im so tired of hearing about poor Shelley, she should of just quit and could of got replaced with someone more attractive

You guys also didnt mention how Margaret Hamilton literally caught on fire and had to be hospitalized. Insane.
reply

The Lord of The Rings should be mentioned. Shooting lasts 14 months and the actors endured multiple injuries.
reply

The only good thing that came out of the movie Cleopatra is Elizabeth Taylor and Richard burton relationship
