The Bell X-1 had relatively small wings, you were close. You were probably thinking of something like the X-15 with really tiny wings that practically went into space but not orbit.
Also, please somebody do an edit of the scene where that refugee outpost in Half-Life 2 gets shelled but it's a blurred out, Busto colored object that crashes through the roof.
