Top 20 Alternative Bands of All Time

we’re counting down our picks for the most influential alternative groups that have helped shape the genre into what it is today. Our countdown of the top alternative bands of all time includes Weezer, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and more! Which alternative band do you think has left the biggest legacy Alice in Chains didnt revolutionize the entire music industry the way that Nirvana did but they were a way better band than Nirvana. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell were better song writers than Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl. All due respect it takes nothing away. Alice In Chains to me was the manifestation of the expression of the core of the soul if I ever heard it. There are bands that you just want to rock out for and then there are bands that make you feel the power and emotion in everything they say and how they say it. Few made me feel spectrums of emotions that Alice In Chains did.

Alternative to what I hate all this Pigeonholing of Music. You could call the Beatles an alternative to the music of the time, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin , David Bowie, it's nonsense . Every time a Band makes something new it's immediately branded Alternative . To me it's just great Music. I'm 70yo and grew up with the Beatles but that doesn't stop me from regarding the Cranberries, Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and REM as some of the best bands who ever existed. Great Music is NOT an alternative . It makes it sound like Bands only a few fans would like and nothing could be further from the truth. Anyway that's my opinion, for what it's worth.

A great list. Lists like these will always be contentious and give many various opinions so here’s mine
Oasis should replace the strokes
Nick Cave should replace cage the elephant
Joy division replace cranberries
Jane’s addiction replace weezer
I wonder if beastie boys should be in there somewhere too
Honorable mention to: silverchair, the vines and you am I as Aussie bands always miss out on these lists

When I was 16 the Smashing Pumpkins changed my life and awakened me to how majestic music could be and what it can awaken in the soul. When I was about 23 and had been playing guitar and bass for a couple of years RHCP showed me what could be achieved by not limiting my taste and influences to one or two genres. To this day I dream of a collaboration between Billy Corgan and John Frusciante.

Nirvana I think is default #1 because they did in fact revolutionize the music industry. I think there are several bands that were better, but they were seen as the very first in modern music, They didnt just effect their own genre either. The ripple effect that they had on every genre is undeniable although I think as a band and their quality of music was overrated in a lot of ways.

Overall, it’s not a bad list, but no Linkin Park and no Green Day is pretty weird. I also probably would’ve thrown a ska band in there, like No Doubt or Sublime. Twenty-One Pilots also deserves mention imho because they’re pushing the boundaries of alternative music more than anyone that’s been on the radio in the last decade and they have an incredible worldwide fan base too.

Why is Soundgarden so low on the list Really 1994 Listen to Badmotorfinger or Louder than Love. Those albums defined the genre! And Pearl Jam reaching success at the end of the grunge Genre Ten came out in 1991, and it's one of the most iconic grunge albums of all time. How in the F did this list get made
reply

Rather an American list. When I think back, in the 00s the most influential band in this part of the world were Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and Ladytron, and they were not mentioned - many people started their own band because of these three acts. And I would never skip Joy Division and New Order
reply

Really Nirvana listed at number 1
Quite a few of the bands also listed in this video actually influenced Nirvana so I feel that they are far more important and should be ranked above Nirvana
Nirvana just like most of the 90s bands weren’t that creative compared to bands of the previous three decades

What’s wrong with this list
You have Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden listed but not Alice In Chains.
You consider Talking Heads an alternative band but not the Ramones.
Then you state that several people/bands having surpassed Kurt Cobain/Nirvana only to have Nirvana be #1.

reply

I havent finish the list but i bet they played it safe by putting Nirvana at #1. while i like Nirvana they are nothing (from a music point of view) to Alice in Chains, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead. This is the same mainstream bs that reward shitty music like Taylor Swift or Drake
reply

Yeah Alternative who sold records almost as Michael Jackson. Those bands very easy turn on to mainstream so no A from Alternative. Change your writers or editor, put them in Disney Marvel or something. Also forget about biggest Alternative thing last years, magnificent trash Taylor Swift

I love almost every band on this list and the few that I don't I have massive respect for. Very surprised there's no Alice in chains I thought maybe they're considering them hard rock but if Soundgarden made the list then Alice in Chains should
reply

It's Alice in Chains for me. Lyrics, vocals, harmonies, grunge vibe, metal vibe, their EP's were incredible and their unplugged show is the gold standard. Not to mention their live at the moore performance. Legendary stuff right there.
reply

I love The Cranberries, especially their underrated songs like Loud and Clear, God Be With You and Schizophrenic Playboy. I will never get over the passing of Dolores O'Riordan. The band will not be the same without her.
reply

Where the hell is Tool Are y'all really gonna ignore the groundbreaking music that they've made over the years and the impact they had on the alternative rock scene Or are they not really considered alternative rock
reply

This list is offensive in its placement of Soundgarden, They are top 5 AT LEAST! They were one of the bands that created grunge, they made alternative alternative. And this list in as insult as a result.
reply

I love Nirvana and if this was 20 years ago i would have agreed. Radiohead or The Cure would have to be #1. Missing a lot of amazing bands on this list but i was thrilled to see The Cranberries here.
reply

Alice in Chains is amazing i would take them over Nirvana or Radiohead anyday not ripping on either band by the way just wanted to get that out there so i don't get backlash for this comment
