I was watching live coverage right after the first plane hit. I was watching on BBC America who had set up in New Jersey. The poor newscaster had her back to action but turned just in time to see the second plane hit. Then they broke into that coverage to switch to Washington DC to the Pentagon. I actually knew someone who had just completed an IT contract there just before it happened. I was so frantic, I called her home, and sobbed with relief when she answered. She wasn't even aware of what was going on. That whole day was surreal. I had to go to pick up some groceries, and people were walking around in a daze or crying. If only we could go back to the unity we felt in the weeks that followed.
I live in Texas, so I've personally seen a number of hurricanes, but watching Katrina was awful, since my Aunt and Uncle lived in Chalmette, a suburb of New Orleans. It took me 4 months before I found that they were safe.
I was watching the liftoff of the Challenger. But I personally saw the debris from the Columbia as it streaked across the Texas sky. I also saw Apollo 1 explode on the launch pad, and the televised deaths of JFK and RFK. A lot of tragedy, a lot of history. Being 74 means you've seen a lot.

My sister and I were five and eight years old on 9/11, and the teachers dragged both our classrooms into the library and we saw the whole thing. Look, I understand that the adults had to be aware what was happening, but it was incredibly irresponsible to have full classrooms of children that young watch it as if it were just another episode of bill nye the science guy. We saw the second plane hit and nearly everything that followed. The only reason we didn’t se anything farther is that our parents picked us up from school in a panic. I’d learn from kids that stayed the rest of the schoolday that the TV never turned off, and all these kids saw even more than I did.
For years, I thought this happened to all kids across America that day, only to learn in high school after my family moved states that my classmates had been (understandably) protected from the news by the adults in their lives, teachers included. They didn’t see a thing, and wouldn’t unless they looked it up as they got older.
I’m still incredibly bitter over it. My elementary school handled it so poorly.

I was in Navy basic training when 9/11 happened. It was my 6th week, and my division, along with at least 2 others, were sitting in an auditorium for firefighting and safety training. What was to be about a 10-15 minute wait for the instructors to arrive turned into over an hour. Then we got the news. We didn't have access to any TV, so all we had to go on was someone's word. However, being in the military, instructors are not known to pull pranks. When we heard that the Pentagon was hit, that's when it became real to us.
Secondly, I was actually deployed and in the region of the Boxing Day Tsunami. Given the carrier I was stationed on happened to be in Hong Kong at the time, we were on the scene right after it happened, sending out all of our helicopters from all ships to assist in humanitarian aid. I was there for a lot of shit that went down during the early 2000s. I'm not proud of my individual accomplishments like I should be since I could have done much more, given that I was only a lazy kid with no drive, but I was there.

Seeing an emotional Walter Cronkite tell the nation of the President's death was terrifying to me. Therefore, I'm really surprised you didn't have a report on Jack Ruby assassinating Lee Harvey Oswald later that week. Oswald, who was the primary suspect in the assassination of President John F Kennedy, was being transferred within Dallas to continue further questioning in another facility when Jack Ruby suddenly burst out from among the assorted journalists in the garage of the police department and shot Oswald in the stomach. This was being covered live on TV. with millions across the country watching a murder. As I had days earlier seen the announcement of Kennedy's death, I was witness via live TV to an actual murder.

I was only 1 year old when 9/11 happened so I didn't really remember what happened since I was that young, but my parents told me we were just about to move to Kentucky from Colorado on that day when the news said something was happening in the World Trade Center and the pickup guys and my parent were watching what happened on that horrific, terrible day. Then when I was in middle school I actually learned about it and it was heart stopping when we all saw the documentary of it. I still couldn't believe something so heinous, so horrific, and other words that mean 'bad' or 'terrible' would happen in the early 2000.

The Yarnell Fire stands out to me. Just over 10 years ago, a fire was started by a lightning strike that occurred on a mountain ridge which was situated not far from the town of Yarnell Arizona. The fire proceeded to burn a path towards the town, destroying practically everything in its’ path. Things took a tragic turn when the Granite Mountain Hotshots were dispatched to the area to help slow the fire down. 20 highly trained professionals went in, but only one survived, Brandon Mcdonough. The others were caught in the blaze, and were all pronounced dead at the scene.

I lived in Chicago and there were rumors that the Sears (Willis) Tower was next, you can see it from almost anywhere in the city 10 year old me kept glancing from the tv to the building the entire time.
I remember I was at home watching the news and crying that I couldn't donate to the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina, the phone lines were tied up or something

And we were all just BEYOND what in the heck is going on. But. after both towers had collapsed, our manager arrived in the office and told us all to turn our radios off and GET BACK TO WORK. I am still devastated that this person thought WORK was more important. AND. the only calls in the 'benefits dept were people asking about BENEFITS!

I remember being somewhat young and watching the news when the Waco thing was happening. I remember seeing the same newscaster deliver two different stories within an hour. From a very young age I've never trusted the media and all things considered, I'm very glad. The way I see people sucking up everything the media says right now and believing it as truth without evidence, is asinine to me. It's been so insidious. The more I think about it, the more I can't.

I will never forget watching people jump from 80 story windows of the World Trade Center to their deaths to escape the fires. My family visited Ground Zero in January of 2002. It was just so BIG.
Also, my Grandmother was supposed to be on a flight leaving Philadelphia that day. Not knowing if she got on or not until 6 that night was nerve wracking. The flights were cancelled right before she was about to board.

I remember the Manila massacre. I remember the commander went to somewhere and no one what to do when the ex police started shooting the hostages. I remember women and children were released earlier and a woman pretend one of the child was hers. She bought the child safely with her. I remember seeing the Chinese tourists earlier before the shooting. its a horror and so tragic. You can never forget that

Why Because a tsunami that big (around 100 feet high) would have washed lots of things far out to sea, including corpses. Therefore, a number of tsunami victims were likely swept out into the ocean, where their bodies would almost certainly never be found.

I remember when me and my friends attended our high school prom on June 4, 2016 in Los Angeles.
Then we saw the clouds in an orange color form and we found out that there was a fire near the Monterey region.
My thoughts to those who lost their lives and the wildlife that got damaged. This happened during the 2016 wildfires and it was one of the earliest fires.

Turn on the tv he said. And got to see the second plane hit. We left early from school that day. And the last time I seen gas under a dollar.

I recall seeing the Alison Parker/ Adam Ward shooting live. I had sold her a watch and some jewelry 6 months prior she was a genuinely kind and caring person, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I couldn’t fathom who would want to hurt her or Adam for that matter. The news station honors them both every year, as they should. Such senseless acts of violence

The Hindenberg and the Kennedy assassinations are two thinks I can recall but I don't know if the latter was on live tv or just recorded and shown later. I think all of these tragedies happened during my lifetime, some I remember others not so much. Too much of this kind of thing still happens. I wish for a more peaceful and safer world before I leave it myself.

I remember tuning in just after the first plane hit on 9/11. I was home sick and watched live as the second plane hit. It happened so fast you don't realize they slow down the video when it's shown now. I had a cousin who worked in one of the nearby buildings. He got out well ahead of time. My parent's neighbor lost his older brother when the first plane hit.
