It's Americanized, created to please the more simple palate that Americans tend to have, and yes, that means added sugar. we eat a ton of it in this country!
So, they KNOW they're aren't selling anything truly authentic (from the many, many different cuisines in China); they never meant to. They were damned smart to figure out how to be as hugely successful as they are making EXACTLY the dishes they do, because they paid attention to what our country wanted to eat and then come back for.
Stop whining about the lack of authenticity, excessive sugar, etc. You prefer authentic Chinese? Awesome! It's fabulous food, and I eat it often, having a number of good places to choose from. I happen to sometimes like some Panda, too! So, go eat that fabulous authentic Chinese food, also supporting that small business, but jeez, let folks enjoy their Panda Express; it's not your meal, anyway.

I have great respect for this style of food. Too often folks in my orbit deride this as un-authentic but that it missing the point entirely. Its not trying to be authentic; the food utilizes ingredients that were/are available to early chefs from Asia/China at the time, the flavours became popular and mainstream, so why mess with a money maker? I highly recommend the book Chop Suey Nation: The Legion Cafe and Other Stories from Canada s Chinese Restaurants by Ann Hui, which really goes out to speak to owners and operators of 'Americanized' Chinese cafes, including her own family history in the industry.

This place is trash on the west coast. They serve you a plate, and barely want to put food. When I went a few times I had to yell and tell them to put more food. The guy put 4 pieces of orange chicken. Then I go to the family owned places that make the same food, and they hook it up and always have me coming back. Panda Express got too popular and portion size went to hell.

pretty much the closest you will get to an industrial food type being done on mass store scale that is the same as other individual smaller stores serveing same thing, a panda express store isnt much different from any chinese store doing westernised dishes in america, uk, europe, australia etc

Not exactly healthy with all the starches, carbs and sugar, tastes great though. Would be interesting to see nutritional info compared to a hamburger, burrito or pizza. Last time I ate at a Panda Express, Carlos, Jose and Poncho did a great job cooking and Juanita and Maria did a great service.

All the times I've been to PE and dined in, I paid attention to all the people that come in to order. Every single person orders Orange Chicken for at least one of their items. This entire franchise is built on Orange Chicken. (I love Orange Chicken, so I'm not being critical)

fresh veggies delivered twice a week - they might be fresh when they are delivered, but in day 4 they are anything but that. combine that with the truly insane amount of sugar they use and you'll know that you should never eat there

I was a huge fan of Panda Express in my younger years after football practise, Orange chicken and Chow Mien were my favorites. I only wish I could get those wonderful teenage memories reawaked in my adult years here in Australia!

The flavour profiles look like they're optimised for children's palates. How the hell is it reasonably called kung pao chicken without Sichuan peppercorns?
No wonder seppos find other cuisines unapproachable.

It's not fast food. It's good food quickly. I really appreciate Adrian's dedication and care he takes in his preparation and cooking. You can feel his excitement in making good food for his customers. Good stuff.

If 80% or more of customers in an Asian restaurant are non Asian more likely than not it's not authentic. That's a rule. Support your local mom and pop restaurants as they are more likely to be authentic food.
