Lucas you are 110% incorrect when you say food trucks were not popular in Hawai'i up until recently. I think Hawai'i invented the food truck. They were called Lunch Wagons and they were everywhere especially in Honolulu along the water fronts and in the industrial areas providing delicious affordable lunches for blue-collar workers. I am pushing 60 years, and was raised here, and I remember as a kid my dad buying me plate lunches at the lunch wagons at Kewalo Basin on the Honolulu waterfront, and along Sand Island Road, or the airport industrial area. Were talking over 50 years ago, and lunch wagons here predate me by decades to pre WWII. They are still around and popular with working class people in parts of Hawaii few tourists will ever visit. You missed out not trying these real parts of Hawai'i's culinary history and culture. You also missed out not trying Romys Kahuku Prawns & Shrimp located in Kahuku on the northern most point of Oahu. Romy's has the freshest shrimp because Romy's farms their shrimp in the ponds right behind their shrimp hut. Best fresh prawns & shrimp in Hawai'i.

I was born in the 50s We ate out of food trucks since I was a baby. Depending on whether or not we wanted spaghetti or stew, we would frequent certain trucks mostly at the beach where they fed hungry, cold surfers primarily. Because of government restrictions, their popularity waned for years but new trucks equipped to cook fresh food with refrigeration made a comeback by the 90s. Not very popular in Hawaii? Sorry, we probably were eating out of food trucks first. But what I will tell you is that Giovanni's is most definitely the first of all the shrimp trucks on the North Shore. I used to go to them since the 70s when they were the one and only shrimp truck around. There was no eating space, just some sand, grass and a garbage can. Now, it's a commercial hub of activity. But the shrimp has remained the same. Good, garlicky, fresh and made to order even through a change in ownership.

hmm. just wanted to put it out there I personally don't like Giovanni's no matter how many times i eat it. its completely overrated, of course many people love it so I keep going back to see if it can get any better but always disappoints. If you do decided to go Giovannis to try it and have an appetite I really really recommend Teds Bakery, their Garlic and Spicy shrimp is amazin. Sounds weird that its from a pie shop but its way better, it also comes with mac salad and a slice of their amazing pie! If not you could also try the Korean run shrimp truck which is about a 20 second walk from Gio, its also better.

What are you talking about Lucas? Food trucks or lunch wagons as we call it in Hawaii has been around for at least 50 years, so I don't know where you getting your information from. It may be a new thing on the mainland but on Oahu you could find them all over the island, especially around construction sites and industrial areas where the working men and women could find an affordable and convenient place to eat.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

Food trucks originated here in Hawaii. We just didnt call them food trucks. We called them Manapua Trucks. There is a documentary on the food network stating that food trucks started here with our manapua trucks that I remember as a young kid in the early 80s and they were here way before then and still exists till this day. Tom and Sandy best manapua truck ever! :)

Shrimp truck maybe. shrimp stand? No, those stands like Romy and Fumis hve been there longer. Yeah if you wanna stand in line FOREVER. go right ahead. If you want fresh. because I literally watch them bring in the shrimp in the bucket from the farm next door, catch fumis. That is a tourist trap. How do I know? Former tour guide, local girl.

This was local news way back when: the current operator is the second owner (as you saw on the video) and bought the business from the original Giovanni for a hefty 400, 000, including his secret recipes. Giovanni then regretted his decision and got some local thugs to try to take back the business but was not successful.

I ate at this place yesterday and it was awful. I don't think that I've ever had overcooked shrimp like that before. They weren't even cleaned or anything. Their hot and spicy is disgusting. They literally just pour a ton of Tabasco on it and call it good. The garlic shrimp is plane. I will never reccomend this place to anyone.

Food trucks are not new to Hawai'i. Giovannis has been around for decades. We have manapua vans that are like ice cream trucks that drive around selling food, snacks, drinks, ice cream. And we have regular food trucks. We've had them around for a really long time.
