I'm italian but my hot chocolate recipe is actually french, or to be precise, is derived from a french variation. It's actually very easy and takes very little ingredients: whole milk, cinnamon powder, sweetened cocoa powder, chocolate and sugar if you want. For a single portion, i let one glass of milk warm up with the cinnamon for a few minutes at mid-low heat while mixing, before it starts forming a film on top i add a couple of big spoonfuls of cocoa powder, mix well and as soon as the whole thing starts thickening up just slightly (i let it warm up just a couple more minutes with a lower flame) and then, i lower the heat and add the chocolate and the sugar, i let it melt and mix until i get the consistency that i like, which is usually very very thick, pudding like, much thicker than your Italian version.

Some Italians prefer not adding the actual chocolate to the mix tbh. I know many just use cocoa and corn starch. The cocoa (which is in bigger quantities compared to the American one) already gives it a pretty strong flavor and the corn starch does it's thing in thickening it. The chocolate is put in there if you want to be REALLY indulgent, but it's not necessary and it definitely makes the hot chocolate way too heavy for many stomachs lol.

A few years ago I was in Venice and one day it was very cold, so we went for warm drinks. I ordered hot chocolate and as a Dutchie I was very confused when I got this pudding like chocolate. First I thought they mixed up my order but after I asked, the waiter told me it is Italian hot chocolate. As a chocolate lover I enjoyed it, now I know how to make it myself and I would eat it as dessert though thsnk you for the recipe.

In all the 12 years I-ve lived here in the US I have never had real American got chocolate. I only knew about the powder packages which to me taste like water with a slight hint of chocolate. Hate it. Now I want to try both of this versions of got chocolate - I am originally from El Salvador and ours is very runny but super dark, nutty and a little sweet.

Sadly, most American hot chocolate is not made as well as you did. It's usually made with those dreadful instant mixes. I prefer the thinner one, more liquid, less sweet and pure cocoa powder, but I wouldn't call itAmerican. It's just a gourmet version, that real cooks make, not average peopkle.

Growing up we had our delicious mexican chocolate and our Spanier version very similar to the Italian and french style very thick not to sweet so we could dunk our churros but til today the mexican style is my favorite. By the way I love the american chocolate recipe.

I tried the American hot chocolate since I live in australia and It worked amazing! -- I replaced the dark chocolate with white chocolate since I didn't have any dark chocolate but it still worked! I am drinking my second one I made today while I write this; ) ----

Haven't had Italian, but traditional American hot chocolate tends to make me ill because it's so rich and sweet, so maybe Italian would do the same? I really prefer the ground cocoa beans that you brew like tea and then I can add as much milk/sweetener as I like.

Try tsokolate eh or tsokolate de batirol, which is a thick hot chocolate from the Philippines, made with hardened chocolate tablets or tablea, sugar and sometimes with fresh or evaporated milk. Usually paired with Filipino rice cakes such as suman. Yum!
