It-s not often that the father-son team behind some of LA-s favorite tacos gets a night out together for good ol- family bonding. So when Armando De La Torre-Senior and Junior-take us on a food tour of Downtown LA and Boyle Heights, they hit all their favorites, new and old. We start the night at Bestia with rhum agricole daiquiris and dry Szamorodni bone marrow luges before heading to an old-school Mexican diner in Boyle Heights called Manuel-s Original El Tepeyac Caf-. The crew puts down a five-pound burrito filled with chile verde, rice, beans, guacamole, and oodles of cheese. We close out the night with cervezas and Morrissey karaoke at Eastside Luv before heading back to Guisados- Downtown LA location for a mountain of carnitas ropa vieja tacos and chorizo quesadillas. -rale

Guisados is amazing. I'm from Southern California and have always lived in or very near Mexican neighborhoods with great taquerias. I first tried Guisados when I was living in East LA about 8 years ago. It had a kind of taqueria vibe but it was kicked up a notch. They weren't just trying to feed you, they were trying to do it at a different level where it was a taqueria but also offering interesting Mexican flavors you might not find at other places, something a bit different than your everyday taqueria. Don't get me wrong, the regular taquerias around LA can be amazing, this one though was a unique thing. 100% recommend it to locals and tourists alike.

At Bestia, just the marrow they ordered was -19. The menu doesn't show the octopus, but the calamari is -18, so the octopus was likely very similarly priced. So for those two small appetizers, you're looking at -37 (not counting their six cocktails. Most people would have moved on to the main course from there, so you're probably looking at maybe -200 for two people to have a meal. -40 for appetizers, maybe -50 each for entrees, a few drinks at -15 a piece, that can easily reach -200. That is definitely not in my budget. El Tepeyac is definitely more in my price range.

At 2: 00 he says there is all these street tacos that serve the usual, carnitas and asada. Well that is why i think texas takes the cake when we are talking about mexican foods. Here in texas you get tacos de carne guisada, cecino, lengua, chorizo, fajita, asada or bistek, then you have barbacoas which in texas you can get de cabrito or de res. On top of that it was very rare to ever find a place where they made tortillas de harina estilo casero. Here in texas you can find it even in the whitest texas city, austin.

RIP Manny, we miss you. When ever I fly home to LA, this is the first place I go to eat straight from LAX. Then Tommy's Original for a double and then Philippe's for beef French doubled dipped. LA Original's I grew up on. Nothing beats the originals. LA has changed so much in the past 55 yrs this is all that is still the exact same for the most part -food places-. Must mention a few others like El Cholo, Fat Burger, and way to many old great places are long gone.

I really do respect and admire their father/son work relationship and even their thriving restaurants. But, -3. 50+ for a tiny taco in my opinion is just greedy and mostly appeals to the hipster demographic in their fully gentrified neighborhoods. Go to neighboring Lincoln Heights for some authentic pre-gentrified mexican food.

Burritos were invented in northern mexico since alot of people up north make tortillas de harina, either way the best mexican food comes from the people on the street selling chilaquiles, tacos de canasta in the early morning in the mexico streets

Sorry, you lost me at El Tepeyac. Its East LA STYLE Mexican Food. NOT MEXICAN food. Go to Mexico City with that crap and theyll laugh you out of town. FYI, Real Burritos DON'T HAVE RICE and Real Mexican restaurants don't use YELLOW CHEESE.

Ehh cool but you can really just go to any Mexican grocery store that has a kitchen and eat the dame thing and a lot less expensive. A taco is a taco the only ingredients that make it stand out is love and love.

Something so heartwarming about the relationship between them two. The banter, the mutual respect for each other but also the pedestal the son puts his father on and the pride and love the father has for his son.

Nothing in the world - not barbacoa or chicharrones or asada or brisket or al pastor, _nothing_ - is better than a bowl of an old tia's carne guisada and a mountain of fresh cooked tortillas to eat it with.
