It took me TWO YEARS to succeed growing loofah gourds, the plant with an interior fiber you use as a shower sponge. Through many trials and tribulations, I bring you my very first luffa sponge harvest, with some tips to help you avoid the mistakes I made along the way

So cool. I am even more excited to open my luffa. I live in Canada and just barely in an area where you can grow. I started mine insides in Feb when there was snow on the ground. And when the weather got warm I planted outside. I started with 10 and lost 5. They also grew really slow at the start. I got lots and lots and lots of flowers before I finally found now I have about 10 luffa on 5 plants and they are everywhere. 2 are crawling into my pine tree one along my fence. They are taking over the garden so much my husband wants to cut them away. I just want to get to the end and peel my luffa.

Hey Eric - We got some Luffa seeds and I plan to sow them directly into my raised garden bed that gets full summer heat and sun (we live in SoCal as well. Two questions: As you know we can get May Gray and June Gloom fog in our area, so when would you suggest to plant them? Also, can you just use the same supports as I would for tomatoes or cucumbers (how high should they be, and/or would it be better to plant along a fence where I have a long trellis. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I didnt realize how finicky these were to grow. My grandmother used to grow them. She had 8 kids/kid-in-laws and 15 grandchildren and every year for Christmas we ALL got a new loofa and so did her friends in Sunday school and her neighbors, all in a climate that has harsh winters. I just assumed they grew like weeds.

I managed to germinate. I have it growing, all the plants germinated eventually. I have 10 of them. I stuck the seeds in the dirt and off it went. It was later because we had a weird spring but it's been since late May, the plants are trellised and 10ft tall now and it's July and no flowers. The leaves are big beautiful but no flowers at all. any help? All my other squash and cukes have tons of flowers and bees on them.

So. where is the Luffa growing guide for 2021?
Kaye Kittrell transplanted her luffa and they just thrived.
I heard if you harvest your luffa before they turn brown, you can just leave them to dry first.
That luffa in your video looked perfect. See how easy it peeled.

It's so encouraging for beginning gardeners to see that even the experts get stumped sometimes! I'm so happy for you that you finally got your luffa! My neighbor gave me some luffa seeds last year, but I put them up for safekeeping, and you know what that means, lol.

Iv been loving watching my luffa grow. One transplant failed the 2nd was a success and a half! I have 2 luffa growing at the same time that are longer than my arm! When it starts putting effort in the newer luffas ill pop em and try to eat the younger ones

I have one growing now. I didn't realize how hard they were to get going. It seems like it's doing good. The leave are getting kind of pale and crispy feeling, but it's putting new leaves on every single day. so idk? I hope I can get just one fruit.

Your luffa failure soubds like my cucamelon failure. out of 9 seedlings I am left with only 3. I thjnk I need to buy a backup seed package, my seedlings died becaus of black fly worms eating the roots: (
