How to Clean & Sharpen Your Garden Tools! Garden Answer Vortagh: Attention viewers! Linseed oil can be dangerous! Please always remember, that rags full of linseed oil are a self-combusting fire hazard! Large areas (and a rag is a huge area, due to all those little fibres adding to the area) means a big area of rapid oxidisation of the oil. That means it produces heat (exothermic) and heat is what starts fires. The can of linseed rags in your garage or shed can easily start its own fire, all by itself, burning down a building. Put a used rag of linseed oil on a flat stone or asphalt surface and let it dry out. Once dry, it's safe. Preferably add some weights so it can't burn away.

A VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE! When using linseed oil DO NOT put the rags in a pile or in the garbage! THEY ARE PRONE TO SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST! Lay them out flat somewhere where they can breathe and dry out. Do not dispose of them until they are totally dry! I have almost caught my front yard on fire with smoldering rags. Same for several other family members working in their garages. It is common and dangerous!

Safety note: If using linseed oil, be sure to leave the rag draped over the edge of a metal trash can or pole, exposing as much surface area to air as possible. Fires from spontaneously combusting oil rags are a serious threat when not allowing the heat from oxidizing oil to dissipate quickly. Keep flammable objects away from drying rags, and do not dispose of rags that are still wet/damp with linseed.

It's worth using some sort of rust protection on exposed metal, especially if you're using trimming back diseased plants, and bleach to disinfect your tools. Bleach is an oxidizer and will rapidly cause rust if you're not careful. Some times something as simple as spay paint works to add that protective layer.
Protect your plants with disinfectant, and protect your tools with rust inhibitors.

I found this video very helpful. I am a relatively new gardener and tool maintenance hadnt occurred to me. I am still in the process of acquiring tools and I wipe them off and put them away and thats been that! I feel ridiculous that I hadnt given this any thought! Thank you for not only bringing this to my attention, but for showing me what to do. I am very appreciative.

Seriously? Scrubbing Bubbles and Lysol wipes? Environmentally irresponsible in so many ways, as is the 3-in1 oil. In my garden, I'll be using a vinegar soak to remove rust, and vegetable oil on the blades to protect them. Mineral oil for the joints, and any serious gardener that I know (plenty) would NEVER mistreat their tools by storing them filthy!

Really great instruction but seriously needs to slow down the speech rate. It would also be helpful to have options for Scrubbing Bubbles incase one does not have Scrubbing Bubbles on hand as well as options for type of file if the carbon blade file is not available. Otherwise, it is a very useful video.

This was sooooo helpful! I have never really cleaned or sharpened my pruners/lopers, but after watching this, I did! And they work so much better! They were so dull it would have been easier to chew off those branches and stems, but now the pruners/lopers do the job just like they were new. Thank you!

Im so glad to see this! I just got my late Mums transplanting shovel, and it needs serious TLC. Its handle has lost its paint too, so I will get the products you used. I also have a pair of expensive loppers, which got left outside, now I know how to rehab them, too.

Great Video! Thanks a bunch! Wondering about the precautions you take with linseed oil? Years ago we left a rag out and it caused a small firer in our garage! . Everything was fine and I loved how well it worked but been too scared to use it since.
