Houseplant Fern Care Guide! Garden Answer missylee5: I'm trying to grow a Japanese painted fern inside as it's just so beautiful I want to see it every day. It's not doing so well since I received it in the mail. I potted it in soil which was too quick draining, and used a temporary pot. I put it outside for a few days until I got my new pot, then repotted it. Several fronds have turned brown & crispy (I'm sure due to sun. I couldn't get much soil off the roots and didn't want to damage them, so most original soil is still attached. Any tips on helping this guy survive? I'm keeping moist and used a diluted fertilizer once a few weeks after repotting to try and coax more growth.

Is it easier to maintain a macho fern in a terracotta pot? Im in NYC. Im in the dryer region. I do mist in the morning and evening. I did refreshen the bottom half of the soil because when I looked at the plant roots the soil was saturated. I removed some loose soil and replaced it with some dryer soil mix( perlite, orchid bark, soil) dash of worm castings, I then put that mixture in the pot first, then placed the plant back in the pot but also back in the nursery pot. How does that sound?

I just bought a fern about 4-5 weeks ago, and within 1-2 weeks, many leaves were falling off and the top of it looked very bare. the long leaves suddenly had lots of gaps/missing leaves, and it went from bright green to a dark green. I have many plants and haven't had this issue. :( I have a humidifier, but now that it's humid here (in Toronto) I've turned it off. I bought it from a great nursery that I frequent, so I don't think they are to blame. what am I doing wrong! help!

I think I overwater my rabbit foot fern by soaking top to bottom from repotting when 1st brought it home. After one week, all new fronds turned yellow, brown and black tips. Then dropped off. It is facing East window with the same lighting as in this video. I see the foots are growing new green. Temp sets in low to mid 70s with humidity 67-71%. Other old fronds are still healthy. Hopefully this is temporary. Im a beginner in growing fern.

I have a fern that I have had about a week now and its dropping little leaves everywhere. I put it in the kitchen sink and drenched it with water and sprayed its leaves with water, then allowed it to drain and it still drops leaves. It also was under an air conditioning vent until I moved it. I dont know if Ill ever buy another one, even though its a beautiful plant. I dont know what to do.

You cannot use insecticide on your ferns or you will kill them. There is only one spray I know that the nurseries use and it is very expensive. Per the University of GA: Research in recent years indicates that many ferns are tolerant to some of our insecticides with only slight injury resulting. However, few, if any, pesticides are cleared by governmental agencies for use on ferns.

HI and thanks for a wonderful video, very helpful: ) I add half strength seasol seaweed solution to my rainwater and my ferns really enjoy it. I make sure the water is tepid, and add the seasol for weekly watering and it works really well on maiden hair ferns especially-they seem to love it and its brought back a couple i was given to rehab which was great and surprising lol: )

I live in the middle of the Florida Keys and just got my first bird's nest fern! Is it true they are epephytic? So they grow attached to trees? I'm so curious bc I know it can go outside! And I just heard there is a fern called Crissy! Have to get that! My name is Cristin aka Crissi! Thanks for the info!
