Fall Plant Shopping! Garden Answer Adrian: I enjoy plant shopping and seeing Laura pick out her array of plants for the season. Gorgeous variety and show how easy well, because of Laura, she makes it look so easy that even beginner gardeners can become super human gardeners. Ty Laura! When plant shopping this whole year I wanted to only get plants for pollinators. As I walk thru nursery departments at several stores, I look to see what the bees are buzzing around then buy those only. What I found is I can look up the plants online that attract them but when I got home and planted, I didnt get any. Plants looked beautiful but thats only part of what I was wanting. So now I let the bees butterflies and hummingbirds help me decide. I think my flying critters are just picky where I am vs elsewhere. Bought so many different zinnias & cone flowers for them and none would even take a second look based on online & nursery provided lists. A distinct difference with local vs big box nurserys that I have noticed is the smaller or local places can have the same plants at big box stores but I rarely ever see any bees or butterflies fluttering around at the big box store plant departments. I now mostly buy from local. I wish all nurseries looked this nice and organized as Lauras parents. Such a sweet place.

Like you, I live in zone 5 (Montreal, Canada) and we grow all the same plants. But I never would have thought to plant annuals in the fall. No sooner would they be planted than cold weather would start and they would all be dead. Mums and kale is sold however even if we will have them for the month of September.
I think the difference between your zone 5 and mine is that our growing season is much shorter (end of May - end of September. We are even advised not to plant before Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24th when the risk of frost is gone. There are flowering plants that hang on into October like anemones but that's about it. So, I envy you your long growing season.

Hi Laura! Super informative video thanks!
Can you talk about vine borers? Each year I plant zucchinis and before I got one fruit the plant is dead because of vine borers. Do you have a preventive treatment for this type of pest? I tried neem oil and yellow sticky traps but it's not very effective!
Thanks in advance!

Gosh, pansies in August! In my country, Greece, it is so hot at the moment, it just dropped from 36C to 31C with a lovely cool breeze. I had to sprinkle water over my plants when the sun moved away, 3 times a day. But planting any of these beauties it is out of the question. Perhaps October.

I planted double dandy sunflowers for the first time and they are all really yellow with only a bit of burgundy. I'm kind of disappointed with how striped they are. Is there any sort of fertilizer treatments i can do to bring out the burgundy or is that just how they are?

4. 34 I plant pansies in November and the love the cold. In that way they last till spring but at the end of May when the temperature reaches 28C and maybe even more, they die out so you need to be prepared to plant something else near them in early spring.

Wanted to know if you ever use rock in any of your flowerbeds? What are the pros or cons? My husband got a load of rock thinking I could use it in flowerbeds. I have used it in a small part of landscaping, some plants doing well, others not so well.

Thanks for another great video, though I may go broke watching you. I also want to thank you for not playing loud music when you are talking. I've stopped watching some other videos because of the loud music. I'm here for information, not a concert.

Love your videos. So many great ideas! Do you have any suggestions for separating grass from mulched beds. I love a natural look but our grass spreads and is impossible to keep out and weeding is quite difficult. Would love any recommends.
