Will Your Take Over Your Parent's Garden Center? / Where is No the Cat? Garden Answer Kate: It's nice to see you sitting out in your garden. You work so hard I scoffed during the tour of your parents' garden center when you admired the rocking bench. As if you'd sit long enough.
Say, our garden centers have finally opened up and I've been tree shopping. I saw an espaliered 'Hat Trick' apple tree I would love to get (3 varieties of apple grafted on 1 tree, but the maintenance of it scares me so I probably won't get it. Then I thought of your pear tree in its high perch. However will you get up there to prune it? Harvest from it?
I have to say, I'm disappointed with my ColorBlend tulips so far. The colors are not true to their photos. One bunch I thought was a straight single variety appears to be a blend and not pretty colors (to me. I loved the more tangerine color shown on their website, but mine are mostly yellow with a couple of the tangerine. The other variety I knew was a blend. It may have been in the salmon family, but some are almost red orange inside. When they close up in the evening all look the same pink/salmon color. Still waiting for the other two varieties/blends I planted to show off their true colors. I hope they don't disappoint. I try to keep to just cool colors in my garden.

Greetings from Boise. btw-its not humid here. i assigned my beds into zones too! For the same reason, weeds, but also to note whats planted. I have to write it down until I completely learn the plant name and details. Last fall i had the edge of my yard dug up for planting, seemed like too much to my husband but i knew it wasnt too much, now he loves it. trying to decide how to maintain the edges, I notice behind you the gravel/grass the edge looks great, how do you manage it? I have iron fencing against a common area, so thinking of pavers under the fence when they mow the common area and trimming it can get the grass edge, do you have a different solution? So what i think of large planting beds look like nothing compared to yours, its so beautiful and expansive, love your videos!

We live on the southern Oregon coast - Zone 9. Our area is known for being able to grow flowers through the winter (Azaleas bloom all year) - IF youre in town. Our home is 3. 5 miles inland from the ocean in a microclimate pocket. We freeze for days on end in the winter. I have to overwinter many plants that continue to grow just fine in town. In the Summer, though, our pocket, on average is a glorious 15 degrees warmer and 80% more sun than in town. I can grow crazy tomatoes up here! In town gardeners cant get their tomatoes to red up. I can also grow ALL varieties of melons (especially watermelon. In town, not at all. Crazy how a few miles can affect the way nature grows!

I was watching a video regarding animals that dig, I have moles, voles & deer, and the man(a pest person) said that gophers do not like USED kitty litter. I know you should have used kitty litter with Russell but I'm not sure how good it would be for plants. In this video the gopher had dug under a porch from one side to the other and he stuffed the tunnel with the litter. ALSO you should try the medical examination gloves, once this pandemic is over, for working in the yard. It is surprising how long/well they hold up and you can 'feel' with these gloves. I wear them and even put other gloves over them when working with my rocks which is 99% of the time.

Laura - when we moved into our house 4 yrs ago two Rose of Sharon were along the fence line between us and our neighbors. We recently tackled removing vinca and English ivy all throughout the area of these trees and realized theyre invasive. Hundreds of shoots, many already wooded were under the ivy. From research, I learned these older variety of trees are self seeding. Were considering removing and replacing with non-seeding varieties, but the neighbor behind us has a large seeding Rose of Sharon. What would you suggest? Were worried that if we replace these trees we will still have invasive trees because of the neighbors tree.

When a tree sends up suckers from the base of the tree, how can you stop that. I cut down the suckers constantly. Is there something you can put on the bottom of the tree. ummmm like pine tar? Or something? I have a wisteria that was growing at my condo. When I left I could not leave her behind. So she is at my new home & is going crazy and I have to cut it back about once a month. She is a crazy woman! I like crazy but. Mail box, while I lived in SLC, I alway planted around my mail box. Here, we have several metal boxes. Ugh. Thank you!

Regarding your gopher problem, have you considered a one time professional abatement/treatment on your new property in order to prevent them from migrating to your beautiful yard? I worry once you start to work the new area your gardens will really suffer. Many golf courses and schools, on a regular basis, have a professional walk the grounds and treat gopher mounds as soon as they appear. Maybe after the professionals do their thing, you could keep ahead yourself. My heart breaks for your lost plants to these monsters. Love your videos.

I noticed a lot of your favorite plants start with the letter H; hosta, hydrangea, hellebore, and heuchera. Is this a coincidence or did you spend most of your time working at the garden center in this section of the alphabet? Lol! I have been watching your videos since before Benjamin and get so much enjoyment from them. Thank you Laura and Aaron for sharing your garden knowledge and experiences!

Hi Laura and Aaron! This was another great Q&A video. Congrats on, now, 805K! That's awesome! I would definitely get a professional to get rid of the gophers. They are such a burden. My husband puts something in the holes at our vacation place that helps, but they just find other routes, or are new to the area. It's a yearly problem. Thank you for sharing!

Hi! Love your videos! Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge! My question is have you done or would you do a video on amending soil for planting? I saw your video on new tools and one was the PW auger test in your dry hard pasture. Thats my ground here is California. hard compared clay with rocks. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks!
