Pruning Tomatoes! Garden Answer Cheyenne: I wish I could get tomato plants this large in Wyoming, we're lucky if they get to about 3 feet tall. But, I do have plenty of tomatoes by the time first snow flies. My Roma's and Jet Stars do way better. I did not have any suckers on my Jet Stars, the plants are sprawling, but no suckers, just a lot of foliage and they've set fruit. They're just as big as my Beefsteak tomatoes. I've struggled with garden beans and cucumbers this season. It seemed to take my cucumbers a long time to get running. There's plenty of nitrogen in the soil, plenty of calcium because I bury my egg shells. I never have to use harsh fertilizers or pesticides, nor do I have to use any type of organic treatments. I have loads of ladybugs, assassin bugs, and the good grasshoppers. Now, I've had loads of potatoes. I used to live in East Tennessee and I thought that potatoes might not do so well in Wyoming, but boy was I surprised. The vines were well past my waist and I only planted 2 5 pound bags. 1 bag of Early Yukon Russet and 1 bag of Norkota. I already harvested the Early Yukon, but the Norkota's are still going strong. Now, most people would say that you can't grow artichokes here. I have a 3 feet tall artichoke that would defy that logic and it looks like it is beginning the center stalk. However, I'm having an enormous amount of trouble trying to grow any type of melons here and it is not a matter of temps because we've had it in the 90's for weeks now. My mango hybrid (I know, most hate hybrids, but I need early maturing varieties) cantaloupe is just now beginning to bloom and take off. I have Black Diamond and Yellow Watermelons and plenty of runners, plenty of foliage, lots of blooms, no watermelon's yet. We really hope to get some this season. I know if I can grow Jack O Lantern pumpkins, there should be no reason why I couldn't grow melons. I've grown pumpkins, all types of pumpkins here with no issues whatsoever and they get normal sized.

I'm so glad you provided a video on this subject of how to prune/ pinch out suckers on tomatoes! I never knew that this needed to be done. I usually plant just two tomato plants each year, in big pots, on my deck. And it wasn't until my father-in-law asked me if I pinch the branches/suckers. And I said no I don't, I didn't know you were supposed to be doing that. Well, now I see first-hand how to do it. Thanks so much for sharing this information. By the way, all the branches that you cut off, can you put that tomato foliage in the compost bin? A lot of good green material there, shame to let it go to waste!

Hi Laura: I wanted to tell you that my husband and I really enjoy watching your videos. In a world of chaos and uncertainty, watching one of your videos per day to learn tips that we can apply in our garden is something we look forward to. We have found your tomato plant pruning tips very helpful. Could you go a video on how to care and prune pepper plants? Ours were doing well, but are struggling now and we cant tell if its because of the heat or something Im doing wrong.

Hi Laura! This was so helpful! I've been looking at my 4 tomato plants and thinking that I really need to prune the 2 bigger ones, a Cherokee Purple and Park's Whopper Improved. The 2 cherry tomatoes are still looking ok. I've never done this before so fingers crossed! I'll probably start out going easy, then see how they look later on. Your tomatoes are looking so good! That was so sweet of Aaron and Benjamin to bring you water and extras. Thank you so much for sharing!

My sister teases me for growing the itty bitty ones to eat. She grows the big beefy ones and I grow cherry types. or the ones that are just hand palm sized. A few years back I grew 18 different varieties, most of which were cherries. Spoon is tiny like Current, size of a pea, grows pretty feral (we had everything in pots, it was amazing to see it turn into this wild bush) and for such a teeny tiny fruit the flavor was SO huge. man I love that itty bitty tom.

What a big job! Thanks for taking us along with you as you tackle it! Love that you sat and ate that tomatoe right in the garden. and it looks like you were giving thanks! On another note, does anyone deal with tomatoe hornworms? I've had 9 so far this year. That may not seem like a lot. I've got 6 tomatoe plants and 6 eggplants and they love both. I've got them interplanted with basil and marigolds. Any suggestions on how to prevent them?

Hi! My name is Stefanie from Omaha, NE.
I have 12 indeterminate tomatoes and have been pruning once a week on average since they were planted 5/31 (bought from Lowe's since I didn't have everything I needed to seed indoors this year. This is my first year growing ANYTHING. I enjoy learning how to properly work my garden from watching your informative videos.
Congratulations on the new family edition by the way!

This video has been so helpful. I ran right out and trimmed up my tomato plants and next year, I will focus my minimal planting area on Indeterminate tomato varieties. One year I literally just bought some tomato seeds from the Dollar Tree to plant along my fence and they grew great, but this year (2020) everyone was buying up all the seeds and gardening stuff from the Dollar Tree and I was too late.

Please help. I planted tomatoes from seeds that I collected from supermarket tomatoes so I don't know what type they are. After four months they're still tiny plants with no fruit or flowers.
I also bought plants from the supermarket, and they're growing really well but their tomatoes have been green for several months now. When should they be turning red?

I have been gardening for over 24+ years and I don't HAVE this kind of problem with weeding, stressing my plant out, suckers, Composting, Synthetic Vs. Organic Fertilizers or none of that crap. I really cannot believe that people are still out here with FALSE information. They get a few tips from someone else and NOW think they are a GURU at Gardening. SMH --'
