It is so awesome that you are building a root cellar! I am excited to see the finished results! What is in the cut out portion of the wall? Will you be closing that off, or utilizing it as a part of the root cellar? I can sympathize with you about all the smoke. My family and I live in the Willamette Valley, and we have been dealing with incredible amounts of smoke and ash for almost 1 1/2 weeks so far. I hope and pray that you don't get as much smoke as we have in our area. Its like heavy fog that doesn't go away. Hoping it doesn't ruin any of my veggies.

Everyone should have a Eddie on speed dial! Our go-to guy is David. David can build anything for us and has. The decorative railings for our front porch and stairs, the pergola that covers our patio that supports a huge trumpet vine, the detached 2car garage with heated bonus room, the whimsical garden gates we call The Hobbit fence and ultimately, the 800sqft addition to the house when we were ready to expand. We call this place the house that Dave built. Find a Professional builder that you work well with and put him on speed dial.

I hope we have some Espoma Land & Sea compost around here next spring. Have a large nursery fairly close by that carries I'd say all of Espoma products BUT the compost. I have one more bag of the compost I bought locally that is just mud when you dump it out. Didn't mix in that well in that condition but think I'll go ahead and use it and plant my garlic today too. Wanted the kind you recommended but only found hardneck so guess I'll go with it for now.

Hey Laura! I have a project for school about what people like about gardening and I immediately thought of you
What do you like about gardening? Why do you do it? What chores do you hate in the garden and why? What is harder in the garden than it should be? If you could have any tool that is not yet invented to help you for a chore in the garden what would that be?
Thank you so much Laura! I love your videos, and your little red kitties: )

I'm not sure if it's been asked before but when you talk about temperature. could you please mention in Celsius on the screen? I'm from Australia and we have a different metric system and it is easier to understand things that way. If I start converting in my mind, I get totally distracted and miss what you are saying lol Thank you!

So I had cat troubles too. Someone else lets the cat/cats roam and they roamed right into my garden. So I learned a new trick! You place plastic forks upright every so often and it will deter the cats. I did not like the thought of plastic and our environment so on Amazon found bamboo forks that are compostable!
Done!

Did any of your plants have a hard time with the smoke? I'm in Central California, with a fire less than an hour away from where I live. When the smoke got bad, my gladioli and azalea bushes took a bad hit and turned brown or died despite sufficient watering and lightly hosing them off at night to remove ash.

Hey Laura! I noticed a lot of flies when you put down the land & sea. Do you feel like it attracts them because of the smell? I was considering using this next year but I have a neighbor who does not clean up after her dogs so I would not want to bring flies my way. Thanks!

Working the last few days and woke up early to watch gardening answer, get inspired and get my garden chores done along with the house work. Would you believe we in Texas are getting some of the fire smoke! Its high in the atmosphere but most definitely affecting out air quality
