Summer Flower Combination Ideas Garden Answer Ann: I live in Staten Island NY zone 7a. The house I have been renting for the last five years has clay soil. I haven't had much luck with in-ground plants. I planted five lavender plants three years ago. Only two have survived so far. In one section where there is at least six hours of sunlight, I planted ornamental lilies three years ago. They are still doing ok. Most of the bulbs produced at least one flower last year. The front yard that I am speaking of has shade areas with very little sun, partial shade areas with some afternoon sun and the one area where I planted the lilies that gets at least six hours of sun. I will be planting in containers this year. I am thinking ferns, coleus and begonias for the afternoon sun area. Hostas for the shade area. I would like to add colorful and fragrant plants to the front yard. Any suggestions?

Hi laura, I know you have one espalier apple tree that is in a container behind your greenhouse. I was wondering why don't you have more? I'm interested in learning more about the process or any other ideas for fruit trees in a small area and also what would be the best fruit trees to espalier in zone 9 (Houston, TX? Thank you for teaching people like me that you CAN grow your own beautiful flowers and veggies. I now have a 30 X 30 Ft garden with all kinds of delicious organic veggies, flowers and grow lights for seeds, etc. Wouldn't have done it without you!
I look forward to your videos everyday, they keep me grounded. You are such a great and positive inspiration and this world could use a lot more people like you and Aaron!

This was amazing - would you do the same with flower beds & back and front yard landscapes? That would be un-real to see everyone's creativity and get ideas! It would be perfect to keep this going throughout the spring and summer! Keep showing people's ideas! It is SO impossible to find landscape plans with everything listed. I don't know why. I always write stuff down from your garden but how amazing it would be to get other ideas! I think most people don't want to or can't spend the money to hire a landscape architect. We want to figure it out ourselves and this would be a great way!

Yes please! I love content like this. Sharing what other people are doing is fabulous. Containers, landscape, combinations, DIY, Houseplants, etc. Watching you both transform your property is so inspiring I'm so excited to see how stuff is going and blessed to watch how it establishes. last year we put in water and power on our 2. 5 acres since it was a drought year. We have planted 45 trees added some rocks. This is the year we focus on year round interest and making things come together even more. since I keep tweaking the design as I found perennials that thrive in our climate.

Loved this episode. For an idea for a future one how about hellstrip planting ideas as a way to expand the garden and provide something nice for the neighborhood (the area between sidewalk and street. I have gotten really into this and absolutely love it. Another one would be very small patio areas or small apartment decks (apologies if youve already done these and I missed them. Im catching up on all of your videos. Also love others ideas about before and afters. This is such a great way for all of us to learn from each other. Thanks!

All those submissions were glorious it's nice to see them at this time of the year when we don't have any colour in our Gardens. Thank you to everyone who shared. I would love to see the other containers and also to see landscaping ideas. It's great to see other people ideas and be able to dream and plan for next year's garden. Thank you again for everyone who shared it was so inspiring!

So right in the beginning of the video 1 person. What do you mean by slow release fertilizer? & when do I use that? Can you list exactly what to use. Also what is a Balance fertilizer? Can you list exactly what to use as well as a picture please. At first they do great then I really have a hard time keeping my flowers going later in the season. Thank you so much!

Laura, I really enjoyed this video! I think it would be a wonderful idea to continue with the series. I live on such a shady piece of property in the middle of the woods so it would be wonderful to see a video showing what other people do with only a few hours of sunlight. Thank you again for all that you do.

Again, no photos from the west US. I wonder why? I live in a hot dry valley and would love to see what others are able to accomplish. Not only in summer but all year round. There are some folk here who are having success planting tropical plants and trees. I just want plants that can survive our summer heat.

HELP! I can't keep anything in my containers because those pesky squirrels keep digging up my containers! I've changed the soil, scrubbed them down really well but they just keep digging. It's not like they're hiding nuts, the nuts haven't come out yet. I am at my wits end. BTW, I'm in Zone 6. HELP!
