Planting Lisianthus Seeds for the Cut Flower Garden (Flowers With a 2 Week Vase Life!
video description
I sowed the beginning of December and saw germination in 2 weeks. They grow so slowly you can never tell whether they are growing. However the roots are growing during that time. I planted them out around April first which was like a month before the last frost. They didnt mind, however the temp never went below 23 degrees
I made many different mistakes that eventually led to their death. Firstly, I am not good at remembering to water. The pots definitely dried out several times. One the leaves begin to wrinkle its beyond repair. I also sowed them in sterile soil with no nutrients, these were pots they stayed in for 5 months. When I planted them outside, 2 were dug up by rabbits and a third shriveled and died. The sole Lisianthus bloomed for me around august 1. It stayed colorful until around December 1. This is in 5b, WISCONSIN, by the way. It wasnt bothered by high 20s frost.
However I will not be doing it again! Haha

I purchased lisianthus plants last year and was successful growing them here in Zone 7B, North MS. I was encouraged when the plants formed new basal growth in the fall, but after seeing this video, that may not be a good thing! They may possibly survive our winter since I see them listed as hardy to Zone 8, especially if we don't have a freeze like we had in February 2021. I'm ordering more, just in case! I will wait until another less busy year to try starting from seed. I think you'll find the verbascum will be very easy. Mine bloomed the first summer, and they are hardy for us. They reseed, but not aggressively. I have grown Southern Charm and Snowy Spires; both were equally easy. I got a very late start with my seed last summer and they still bloomed for me in the late summer and fall. They also take well to transplanting.

I grew lisianthus for the first time last year. successfully. OMG! They are my all time favorite flower! So GORGEOUS! Definitely need to start with new seed. I tried last month to start a batch from last years packet. None grew. My new batch is growing great! I use warming mats on mine to get them started. Seems to work well. After that they are fine with just lots of light and continued watering (I spray mine generously and keep them on the moist side every day because, inside my house, the winter furnace heat tends to dry them out quickly) Time to go start batch # 2. These are worth growing successive batches.

Hi, Laura. I'm hoping you or someone can help me tell which group my seeds are in as I can't tell. I bought the Rosanne Black Pearl F1 Lisianthus seeds from Johnny's. I cannot tell from the seed packet which group it would be in. I'm glad I came across this video; although, I'm guessing I'm a little late on the seed starting. I'm still waiting for my Rootrainer trays to show up. I was going to use them for my lisianthus since it says to sow in deep cell packs. (I saw them on another one of your videos. :-) ) Thanks in advance!

Could you do your viewing neighbors to the North ( aka - Canada) a huge favour, and when you mention something in Farhenheit. could you also mention what that is 'in normal temperature'! (Lol). in Celsius? I always am pausing your videos to see what the conversion is! Hahaha! I love having your videos on in my sewing room to listen to, as I am working on one of my Quilting Projects. such a lovely background video to listen to, as I sew.

I have never had good results with lisianthus from seed. I get fungus gnats or they just die in the seed tray. I just buy plugs now and they bloom for me all summer and fall. I think it's just too warm here. (I'm watching this at 10pm and it's 60 degrees outside) Your video has inspired me to try seed starting them one more time. Will you keep us updated on their growth?

So excited to see this video! Currently reading on Johnny's Seeds about how to grow these and said, (to my kitty's of course) wonder if Laura has made a video on how to grow these b/c they seem a little fussy! AND voila here you are! Thank you (and Aaron) so much for the daily inspiration, the knowledge, and for making the world a better place.

Hi Laura thank you for all your garden inspiration! Were just about to settle on the property we lease and Ive completely changed my garden design after being inspired by all that you do.
Quick question where did you get the tray that you mixed your potting mix in? Ive managed to talk dad into making me a potting bench!
