Planting 4 Varieties of Daylilies- Tough, Low Maintenance Perennials!
video description
I live in southeast Michigan (zone 6a) and have 4 limelight hydrangeas in my backyard which have grown like crazy since I planted them 3 years ago. I want to trim the lower branches to bring the plants up a bit, where over the next several years it will have a thick exposed base up off of the mulch. When should I do this? I leave my hydrangeas alone all fall and winter, and just trim the smallest amount necessary in the Spring. I want these babies to be BIG!

I dont inherently love day lilies but the more colors and variations I see the more they grow on me. Any chance you could do a video walking us through how you choose placements in creating a drift? I feel like I understand the basics, but is there an easy formula a newbie gardener could follow?
Also, I think itd be fun to do a viewers choice section of the garden. Not sure what that would look like but I think it would be fun to see a space like that come together.

My house came with a massive daylily. I keep debating pulling it out because daylillies just arent a favorite of mine. But youre right. If I think of it as an ornamental grass that blooms I like it a bit better. Lol. Mine is a soft lemony yellow. No color variation on it. But yellow and I are friends. Just thankful its not red. Lol. The previous homeowners loved their reds. And Im not a fan. Im colorblind so red blends in too much with the green.

I moved into a house last year and it had two huge over grown clumps of daylily in the front yard I ended up digging them all up and dividing them around the yard and planted them a little thinner in the front with another strawberry candy lily with them they are all orange and adding a bit of pink should brighten it right up! Right now they are happy and I cant wait to see them bloom they are such an easy plant to up keep: )

So question. When ya say zone 3-9, does this mean the plant wont live in zone 10? Im getting ready to move from TN, where Ive lived my whole life, to FL and will be landscaping my property there. I plan to take some of my items I already have, including my current day lillies, but if they wont do well I will leave them in TN with friends. I assumed everything would just work in FL since its warmer but now Im wondering.

Those are pretty Lillies. All mines I had last year some died from the heat. The ones that didn't die last year and began to come back up the caterpillars and grasshoppers took most of them out as they were beginning to grow back. I only have a few smaller ones left.
My feiend gave me a few bulbs to plant the other day and im hoping they all bloom beautifully.
Any advice for growing Lillies in zone 9b?

The daylily (Hemerocallis) can produce severe toxicosis and acute kidney injury to your cats. They just have to rub up against them. Sure they are beautiful but I think we should remember what they can do to our feline friends. I guess your keeping cheddar and friends out of the garden? Disappointed here, just to plant some lilies because they are different.

Ha! I recently planted Asiatic Lily's. I was rather bummed when learning they will only stay in bloom for 3 weeks per each year. You shared re-blooming Lily's! I'm impressed and had no idea these existed.
Your choices are all Gorgeous!
I will keep mine and add more plants that will continue the show longer into the warmer seasons.
Thank you!

These will be gorgeous! I keep doing the math though11 x $20 in the one area alone! I absolutely realize that this is a business (thank you, but not many of us can plant over $500 in flowers daily. Im one of those living vicariously through you! (Id have to buy 2 of each one and then wait to divide them over a few years to get drifts that big)

It's a good rule of green thumb to not plant anything under or around daylilies. that would restrict the airflow and harbor rust and other diseases and pests as would the practice of not removing dead foliage when they die down. I generally trim mine down at the end of the season one by one as the scapes finish blooming out.
