How to plant tulips quickly and easily using the trench method! - Select a site that has full sun and well draining soil - Dig a trench 6 inches deep (or 3 times the height of the bulb) - Place bulbs pointy side up. You can plant bulbs quite close together if you plan to use them as cut flowers or annuals. I like to place mine 1 inch apart. If you plant a tulip that naturalizes well in your area and will be treated as a perennial, follow the plant spacing on the package. - Cover with soil and mulch with 2 inches of compost, leaves, or shredded bark - If your area does not get a lot of rainfall, water well upon planting

I didn't realize we could plant in November - of course I am in a different zone - upstate NY - but I thought no planting past September and I missed the timeframe because of some family issues - my husband had an emergency surgery in early September that put him out of commission for a month - so now I'm wondering if I might be able to plant a few things this weekend - hmmm.

How do you plan your space so that your tulip bulbs don't get planted over by other plants after they bloom? Do you dig them up or plans round that empty space?

Do you ever plant tulips with the intentions of just leaving them in the ground? Would you use the same method?
