When I lived in Tasmania in my late teens and to my mid twenties, I bushwalked solo most of the time and I must admit I preferred this. I cant say at any time did I feel any anxiety or fear of being alone in the wilderness. There were a number of times when I was extremely fearful when I foolishly got into situations where it could have resulted in either severe injury or death but after the initial panic, I dealt with the problem or by - luck- it just worked out favourably. If it hadn't, I may not have been watching your video and writing this response!
While I am a social, friendly person, I have no fears of being on my own. There are times when this is necessary or unavoidable. Humans are social animals, which probably explains why we can live so closely packed in urban areas without lashing out and killing more of us than we do. In most cases, we seek the comfort and safety of numbers. But there are times when a period of solitude may be necessary and beneficial to maintain ones sanity. It's probably why some of us like to fish, hunt or just be out in the wild alone sometimes. Sitting, watching a campfire alone at night is something I find very comforting as well as strengthening. Maybe this harks back to the time when early humans saw fire as a protection against predators and evil spirits that they thought were everywhere, especially in the dark. We are fearful creatures and these fears come to the surface more strongly when we are alone.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and fears--many people cannot do that.
Steve.

That was some great thinking, thank you for sharing. I'm quite certain a psychological change occurs in men when they father children. I've always considered it a hidden spiritual right of passage. Most of us are never introduced or learn the old common rights of passage. Prior to having children myself, I had no fear of heights and didn't think twice about the dangers of them. But after, I can do heights, but I prefer not to, it really makes me queasy now. Being separated from your loved ones is a natural thing because someone needs to hunt for the family. I suspect subconscious emotions of being a father/husband were kicking in that day, which is great and never hear or see shame from this, take pride. If you didn't have this, you might be more likely to abandon them and move on to father more children somewhere else. Abandoning them is less desirable because it doesn't ensure the lineage of the species/family line. Every generation since the beginning of the industrial age has been less and less capable of communicating to their offspring the rights of passage as well as the hidden treasures and bonds of life. Our generation is beginning to turn things around a bit.

I actually get a little pissed off when I encounter people when I am out hiking in the wilderness.
I like the aloneness or solitude.
Usually I never see anyone, as I try to go to remote areas, and I try to avoid weekends or holidays, but once in a while I run into a few people, usually never a single person.
Sometimes I hear them coming from a long distance away, and I move away from a trail, and they go right by me, without ever noticing me.
This why people's fears about bears are usually unfounded, as most people would walk by a bear, and never notice the bear unless it reveals itself to them.
Sometimes you can even dig into, or settle down in a little nook, and you will even see animals coming by that do not notice you if you remain still.

Just like (wild or domestic) animals -domesticated- by humans from birth, or if born in the wild and given no immediate human birth bonding, they will go feral and act alone. Children can go loner from lack of bonding and familial affection, . versus a team player and needing-affection-interactions people. Social animals or loner animals. Social humans or loner humans. Actually less in hassles, drama, stress, and emotional pain by being a loner, and when SHTF, they have already gone over their Dark Nights of the Soul, and will be far more stable, than the population imploding with mental and emotional issues (as walking brain dead zombies. Loners, as independents, can take care of themselves, as they have done since the earliest of times.

It amazes me how few views this got but how true the info really is. im watching it for the 4th or 5th time and know first hand this is by far the strongest element of nature anyone can face. much tougher than animal, hunger, or weather. very very strong video you put out here. i wish all your viewers would watch this to truly understand where you are coming from. this deals with the biggest preditor man faces during solitude. his own mind. powerful vid. people think the wolves and bears are a legit fear. no there thoughts will get to them much quicker than most wild animals will.

First of all I really like your video they make you think. But about being alone, have you ever thought about having a dog with you?
I am not used to being in the wilderness but i have a lot of experience with being alone/lonely and one of the things that helped me to overcome the loneliness was when i got a dog.

Some deep thinking on this video! Last years winner talked a lot about his relationship with God and therefore, most of the time, never felt -alone-. Many prisoners find -God- while in prison. Have you done any analysis on this component as it relates to human nature?
