We put that to the test and toss in trapped live minnows I collected using a minnow trap funnel type trap in a local creek. I also catch some green frogs along the bank of the pond and toss them in to see if the trout will grab them! I will also test out the new pond kayak sponsored by Pelican Kayaks: POND

i use barley straw to help keep the water in my koi pond clear. Koi fish can do alright in a mossy pond like that, but i have found that they breed more readily, and seem less stressed if its clearer. try getting a few bales of barley straw and drop em in the pond. as they break down they will clear up the algae naturally and without doing any damage to anything else. i would definitely get out as much as you can first, that way you don't lose a bunch of fish when the algae dies.
it takes a little while for the straw to start breaking down and doing it's thing, but once it starts it should last for about 6months or so, and barley straw is relatively cheap. you can also buy the barley straw composted tea, and that will work right away, but its more of a 1 time thing for when you have a big bloom, and it's a lot more expensive.

Call your local mosquito abatement district. tell them how big your pond is and they will give you mosquito fish. Do not tell them you have bass. Catching wild -minnows- out of a stream runs the risk of introducing all kinds of trash fish, including carp.
You ended up with fewer minnows in your trap overnight because many were eaten by the crawdads. To prevent this, add a plastic bottle sealed with air in it to the trap and it will keep it floating off the bottom to preclude the crawdads.

I've contemplated moving to canada before, thing that turned me off the most was just the VAST amount of mosquito. I was in cleena cleene and bella coola, holy smokes, you couldnt leave a structure before being eaten alive by mosquitos, not sure how you guys deal with it

Why not set up a breeding area close to your pond for the frogs? They'll no doubt cross over into the fish pond and sometimes be eaten, and then you've got a little bit of a self sustaining eco system set up.

A good aeration system cost -1, 000. You need it for healthier fish. Also certain water plants. How about brine shrimp and soldier fly larvae for fish food. Free food later.

Fill one with tadpoles to make your lake a frog feeder. Once they turn into frogs they can jump out of the trap and into the lake
