Landshark is right about thousands off King Mackerel spawning off of the Florida coast now a days. This is a shell of what it was 25 years ago the #s were in the millions? But mans over fishing/ pollution and destruction of the estuaries along the Florida coast has pretty much ruined most of the fishing. I commercial King fished part time back in the 1980s. More than 50% of the Mackerel are sold the the pet industry. The rest is in almost any product contains fish fillers. Really how many restaurants menus' do you see King Mackerel? The BP spill really did a lot off damage. Your spinning your wheels fishing for a living around here now. Unless you Daddy payed for the boat.

What people don't realize with fillets and bycatch is that any fish that hits the dock HAS to be sold and processed. It's not like any bycatch is a wasted fish. I've caught 600 lb of ladyfish which is considered a trash fish. Took them to the dock and they were sold. Apparently it's used in cat food. When practiced correctly, commerrcial fishing methods are not as invasive as most people believe, at least in the US. I've been a commercial fisherman all of my life and have even done King fishing, absolutely love it and being up close to such beautiful fish. Great video man, showing people how the other half enjoys the water!

For those concerned but uninformed viewers: King Macks have a conservation status of a Species of Least Concern, which is the best rating. In other words, healthy population, not overfished at all, not declining. The method of harvest shown in this video is by far the most conservative, most selective, ecologically sound method there is (as opposed to gill nets or longlining. There is virtually zero bycatch and zero danger to species of concern such as dolphin (mammal) or turtles. Well done. So don't worry. Head on down to the fish market and pick up some King steaks to grill today.

I find this a lot more fair for the fish. A rod and reel doesnt always mean fish instead of a gill net where you will catch not only the target species, but other species including turtles and sharks. Ive been commercial fishing and there has been days that we have caught little to no fish. Which in my opinion is fair.

Another reason fish populations are declining. When I was kid 20 years ago we could catch 40 and 50lb smokers all the time now only a dream. Now the limit is 2 fish per person and your lucky to catch a 20 pounder. Commercial fishing should come to an end!

If anybody is hating on rod & reel commercial fishing, look at china where they use mile-long gill nets and catch sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and anything else including their target species. This is much more humane.
