In the first episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've finally made it to California and am ready to start kayak fishing. I meet up with Mike Ponce in Dana Point to start scratching new species off my list. Today's targets are calico bass, leopard sharks and whatever else we can find offshore. Watch until the end for a preview at episode 2!

How did you learn how to make videos? You must have someone helping you take video of you at times? Are you at all concerned about the state of our fisheries? I mainly fish in Oregon and have noticed that the catching of fish has declined precipitously? I have spent most of my time fishing on rivers but have spent lots of time on the Southern Oregon coast and feel that the fish populations of salmon and steelhead has decreased 90%. When catching salmon and steelhead we now fish barbless and never touch or beach our fish. We just get them close enough to apply a hemp stat to the hook and let the fish flip off hoping that lessens mortality. Keep up your great work, Tom Purtzer

The sealions have now been fully protected since the 70s. They have their place, but there are now far too many. As a result, they have hurt unshore fishing along CAs coast. They eat 30-35lbs of fish every day. That equals several 'daily' Calico Bass limits, and they are much more successful. They have even been seen eating 7' Thresher Sharks. They also provide food & attraction for the increase of Great Whites. They should be brought under control. The balance has been affected!

Looks like that Leopard Shark swallowed the sardine and hook. Did you get the hook out? Can you leave hooks in since its salt-water and the hook just deteriorates allowing the fish to live?

I watch all your vids great job, bro enjoy them all. Can you recommend a spot for me to get started this fishing season. Dana point or la Jolla for first trip? How many miles do I go out?

Great videos. I really wish you wouldnt be so forthcoming on where you are and showing the beaches your launching from. Not necessarily this video but others you have shown everything.

So when your fishing for bigger fish. Is your reel spooled with all mono or braid. And if you use braid what knot do you use to tie your liter to your main line?

As an angler here on the Pacific coast (SoCal) I really enjoyed your west coast field trip. Any plans on an East coast field trip?
