This video compares the PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X airflow & cooler design using Schlieren photography, which allows us to visualize the air density gradient around the consoles. Schlieren photography is useful for visualizing air patterns and movement when the air density has a gradient -- or a change in density -- surrounding a product. This isn't a perfect testing method and doesn't tell us thermal performance (we use thermocouples for that, and the Series X thermals will be uploaded in a few days), but it does tell us how the air exits the consoles, how obstructed it might be, and what directions it takes. This also allows us to the opportunity to closer analyze the console's internal heatsink design: Even though we can't see the heatsink with this imaging, we can see how the air exits the device and at what angle, and speed, and all of these factors allow us to better understand the finstack impedance and angles. The Sony PlayStation 5 already had thermal testing in one of our previous pieces, with the Xbox Series X thermals coming up soon.

15:59 That secondary cooling slot is there in case someone (a kid for example) puts a game or something on top of the console in it's vertical position covering up the fan. I also suspect that is why the fan is recessed further down so air can escape that secondary slot instead of overheating if someone did block that fan in a entertainment center. Would love to see you test that part and see how the heat dissipates from there when there is something blocking the fan area.

aaah no your digging to far for a explanation as to the fan depth ratio on the xbox, its way more simple, the space between the screen and the fan is in effect a manifold, a space for pressure to build an normalize and the exhaust through the grate which is a defuzer. Hints to why you see the air conforming to the depth an curvature of the vent also causing the air to hold its concentrated density . Tig welding cup defuzer might give perspective to this. great work.

Usually tear down videos annoy me because there are people out there who can't get the console or GPU and here we are watching someone rip it apart. But in the name of science it's actually really interesting and hopefully you learn about the thought process of design (assuming the design is actually good). Loving the new testing methodologies. Yes I started with a negative - but I'm trying to turn this into a positive ;-)

So a cup of tea or coffee placed on top of Xbox while playing, should easily hold it's wormth for much longer, by being perfectly enclosed by hot air, due to hot tea temp to exhaust air temp delta being much smaller, than hot tea temp to ambient temp delta. Another good feature of new console :-D
Also in case of some sensually smelling coffee, Xbox will help spread the scent around the room ;-p

If anyone is interested in experimenting with schlieren images, there is a way to do this on the cheap, requiring only some basic image processing: synthetic schlieren or BOS schlieren. Basically, you use a background with a texture and then subtract it from the frames. The only thing is that the sensitivity is lower, but still fun to do, even made a video about it using python and openCV.

It would be interesting to see the actual airflow volume dispersed as hard numbers for each console. I realize this would be hard to measure, just a thought. Maybe the theoretical numbers (the specs of the console) might or might not match with the actual airflow debit of the console when in high load.

I have another theory why the air is flowing in a cone with the xbox: with higher air flow velocity the pressure is lower, so the air in the middle, sitting right atop of the fan, is sucking the surrounding air towards the middle due to higher airflow and thus lower pressure

Hey steve, you replied to a comment once. Hope you'll do more content like this, I really want to see how various coolers and component combos look in terms of airflow. I design SFF cases where it's perhaps more important compared to a spacious tower case setup.

Problem I find with the xbox's exhaust, if you lie it down it means anything on the right side like a amp or blu Ray player, will get hit by the exhaust, so meaning you have to have the xbox on the right side of the unit, so the exhaust is hitting a wall.
