Corsair 7000D Airflow & 7000X Case Review: XL Cases for E-ATX Builds

Corsair's new 7000D Airflow & 7000X cases are now out, priced high and XL-sized. These are for E-ATX builds and compete vs. the Fractal Meshify 2 XL and O11 XL. Review tests thermals. Until 7/31/21, 33% of all profits from sales of GN posters will be split and donated to the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and to Fight to Repair! Both organizations are focused on repairability of products, reduction of e-waste, and legal protections for consumers to truly own maintain their own devices. This review of the Corsair 7000D Airflow & Corsair 7000X looks at thermals, noise, and build quality. These cases are built for larger computers, so water cooling is highly compatible with the chassis, as are large motherboards (E-ATX, although there are issues with EATX in this case). The Corsair 7000D Airflow follows-up the Corsair 5000D & 4000D, so we compare the three cases in this review. We'll also look at the 7000D vs. the Fractal Meshify 2 XL, Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2, and Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL. Large tower cases are a smaller market and highly competitive, so the 7000D has a hard fight ahead of it.

I used to purchase Corsair products but a string of unreliable and poorly engineered products has moved them to the blacklist. With all these brand renamers you have to keep an eye out for that first bad product and then stop buying because they are not investing anymore but have started cutting corners to get the most out of the name they have been losing money on. It's a cycle that is probably pushed by the same group of investors moving from name to name. I believe Lian Li is the next. Right now everything is great. In 2 years they will have power supplies and ram on the market and will be looking to bring cards and boards out soon. OR, they will decide they dont have the momentum to make the jump and they will start liquidating like they are doing with Corsair now.

I swear in fifty years Corsair could charge a million dollars for a case and still somehow justify including cheap plastic parts, e-waste fans, and steel construction.
HEY CORSAIR, there's a reason why premium laptops and ACTUAL PREMIUM cases use aluminum construction. And no one at all cares about fans in a case like this. If they want RGB, they'll buy matching ones separately. Otherwise, they'll be using gentle typhoons or noctuas at this price point. First time builders and budget consumers aren't going to walk into microcenter and pick this 300 dollar thing up cuz look mom the fans are included!
Frankly, this is underwhelming but what else is new from these guys.

Every single damn case has some or other problem with the HDDs. Really horrible guys all these companies. I had high hopes for 7000D since I tried to buy one O11DXL and returned it because the drives would cook themselves up in that poor ventilation. Meshify 2XL is a good choice here then but they skimped on the feet which are now plastic instead of metal. Small things make a case great. This is really unfortunate. 7000D looked like perfection but now, those sleds are complete trash. If I plug a Seagate Exos or WD RED Pro both 7200RPM drives they will rattle and die. SMH.

So, the conclusion is this: buying the 7000D is like buying a house; first, you get it; then, you make measurements; then, you start buying or ordering everything, including the kitchen sink; after all that, you fight with your spouse regarding his/her mom's futon not fitting anywhere. Headaches come to life, then kids, then your dog dies of old age! At least you get that motherboard hinged door as a patching panel for your car's leaky sunroof when you'll need to sleep in it after a divorce, so that's a +, right?

If I understand correctly, the 7000X with the airflow front panel performed better than the 7000D itself. However, you mention that there are better-performing alternatives in the 7000X's price range. What other full tower airflow cases do you recommend that don't sacrifice airflow for RGB or vice versa? Surely there are options out there for similar prices with both the competitive performance and the frivolous aesthetics? Thanks for your time and for the great analysis as always.

Those PSU vents at the bottom are pointless if the PSU shroud is vented. It's then better to place PSU with the fan faced toward the vented shroud.
I experienced this with my Seasonic Prime PX-850, which spun up every now and then with the fan facing down. When i flipped it around it never spun up again. And that's in a Fractal Define 7, which also has a vented PSU shroud.
Might be something to investigate with Hybrid PSU reviews.

Very curious that the main piece of the cable cover in your 7000D had full notches cut into it for the front fan cables. The one I got just had holes, which meant the fan cables looped through them and the piece could not be removed without untying the front io bundle they were grouped with, so they could be pulled through and release the panel. Hopefully the full notches is how full production models come, as is a pita otherwise.

Still rockin my Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow. Perfect big tower. Unless the acrylic sidewindow and the plastic 2.5 quick swap drive cages, this case provides excellent build quality. I do not see any reason to upgrade to a 7000D. The thumb screws and screw threads are even better quality than on my O11XL. These big cases are a must, imo, if you want to run at least 2 aircooled GPUs per rig.

I am still very happy with my 750D Airflow edition. It comes with a lot of space for thicc radiators and despite the case airflow not being completely optimal since I added dust filters to the bottom air intakes, I am still able to have a completely silent and cool running system. Vega 64, 3900X Alphacool thicc 240 + thicc 360, Phanteks C350AP, EK Vega w/ backplate, D5 pump.

I bought the Phanteks Enthoo SE around 5 years ago when I upgraded my set up. HUGE case but when refilling my watercooling fluid and installing my 3080Ti card I was so glad I want to such a great case with fantastic airflow. It made a fiddly job so much easier to do. I won't look forward to moving the PC though if I have to move home any time soon.
