So that's what has been going on. I remember a few years back I was pretty used to have error code thingies that would tell me what was the problem with my motherboard, and I've never really bought an extra expensive motherboard, but my latest motherboard, an Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro only had this single led telling me there was a boot error, which I wasn't even aware it was just a single led until I had to debug my pc not booting, and I figured out the motherboard was not going to help me.
At the time I thought that maybe it was my fault because I bought a cheap motherboard (thought X570 itself isn't cheap), but now I realize that wasn't the problem.
This sucks.

I was literally making this same complaint the other day. Even if you only build the system once, this is still really useful in case your brand new expensive components don't seem to be working. You're average build wouldn't have the luxury of being able to swap components to try and diagnose an issue which could be made very obvious by having a seven-segment display. I should not have to spend more on a motherboard than a CPU for this feature.

the PCIe layout also is horrible and almost the same for all vendors, its real bad right now; like 8 years ago mainboards seemed better equiped (although, yes I know, the technology is more complicated these days and everything is cramped, but at least try to do something original maybe? it doesnt help to advertise your board if its just like any other)

The biggest problem is the consumer. Most people won't know what to do if they'll see the numbers. It's like cars that had troubleshooting on their manuals, but they have switched to how to setup your infotainment. Phones have hide all the cool settings under many layers and want consumers to think the work with magic etc

Yeah it kind of boggles my mind how some boards are missing BASIC quality of life features, I jumped from the x470 asus prime pro to the x570 prime pro, and it boggles my mind that Asus could not be bothered to add cpu-free bios flashback or any diagnostics outside of the basic 5 boot LEDs

Came expecting a slightly unhinged grumpy Steve.
Got a very grumpy Steve making valid points but at the same time yelling at the kids to get off his darned lawn.
Need a Snickers, Steve? Maybe a cup of coffee? Remember when your debug was a series of beeps?

300 Z790 motherboard only has 4 LEDs to say if it's CPU/RAM/GPU whatnot issue. And those are hidden behind the graphics card when installed... bloody useless.
Coudn't find any debug code motherboard. I see it was not just me.

Why would I need debug features on a motherboard when I can just take a sledgehammer to it or yeet it out the nearest window at the first sign of problems and then buy a new one?
Or at least that's what the manufacturers tell me.

I really miss my old Asus P5Q-Pro... It didn't have any of those debug LEDs etc but It was a wonderful board for its time and let me OC my E8400 to 3.6 on stock voltage while running 2x 4gb sticks of DDR2.

Was only talking about the price of motherboards yesterday! Absolutely ridiculous! I m getting to the point where being a pc enthusiast for the last 30 years I m just getting priced out of the market

I looked at a new build....wnd i could not find a non shitty motherboard for cheap without flashy trash and actually useful festures for maintenance and diagnostic for a not so obsurd price of 100 bucks

Omg finally someone adressing this issue, it somehow always got worse and worse for no reason whatsoever. A few years ago at least most mid to higher end mobo had these debug displays

What's funny is Buildzoid was talking about this exact same thing on his stream yesterday. Almost word for word about debug codes only being available on more expensive motherboards.

Manufacturers in the PC market seem to forget that other hobbies exist outside of PC building. Keep price gouging and holding features back, my wallet will hold back too.

The debug LED is treated as a premium option. They used to be on every cheap ass motherboard back in the day. The freaking things only cost pennies to add to a motherboard.
