I'm the one who broke the SMR story. WD are currently trying to gaslight people and claiming that it's because they're overdriving their arrays. I found the problems on a ZFS RAIDZ3 array when replacing old drives - the array was otherwise IDLE. 3 different WD REDS had the _same_ problem. It's a firmware bug which causes the drives to read an unrecorded sector and barf, throwing a hard error at the system, which rather sensibly throws the drive out. (smartctl -x shows a IDNF logged internally. The OS sees a hard IO error) It was digging into it that I found the DM-DMR issue. (The error is catastrophically fatal on a CMR drive, but normal on SMR if the drive reads an unrecorded area or just ahead of where the write point is on a SMR zone and should be masked out) Apart from the firmware error, Resilvering time for a drive replacement in a parity RAIDset goes from 12-20 hours for a CMR drive to 8-10 DAYS for DM-DMR at 2TB drives With the firmware bug, what actually happens is that resilvering runs for 1-2 hours and then borks out. (IF you can get the drive to resilver, getting it to STAY in is another issue. I got two to import by breaking all the rules but the results are _NASTY_ - millions of errors on scrubs. Don't try it) IMPORTANT: unless you reconfigure your drive mounts, every time you access a file, the last accessed metedata is updated - meaning every read comes with a write. You MUST know you have a DM_SMR drive so you can switch to archival mode for the filesystem and turn off last accessed updates. WD have been gaslighting complainants for 18 months on this issue. Seagate and Toshiba are also shipping DM-SMR drives and have been gaslighting people complaining about shitty performance, but WD REDs are _specifically_ marketed as NAS and RAID drives. These are marketed for home and SOHO NAS/RAID use, so consumer protection laws apply, not business advertising laws. The FTC and co should be looking at this. (BTW, Micron ION 5210 enterprise QLC drives are down to 680+tax for 7. 96TB( 380+tax for 3. 96TB) - 0. 2-08. DWPD, but that's still a better ratio than a SMR drive and you get a 5 year warranty. This is parking tanks on the HDD maker lawns )

The question isn't 'why are AMD reintroducing the Ryzen 3 line? ', it is, 'how good has their production been lately that they didn't need to bin down enough chips to make it worth their trouble to sell a low-end chip line? ' One thing a lot of people don't get is that the existence of lower-end CPU and GPU SKUs are almost entirely a consequence of how chips are produced, tested, and binned. The majority of CPUs in any given generation are made exactly the same; the difference comes when their quality control checks the individual chips for defects, and decides whether to recycle it, or if they could instead seal off some sections of the chip or rate it for a lower clock speed than intended. This is literally a foundational technique for the VLSI integrated circuit business - Intel was spun off of Fairchild Semiconductor in 1966 specifically for the purpose to testing whether this method of sorting memory chips by their data capacities and rated speeds would make what we today call MSI (mid-scale integration) a profitable enterprise. Needless to say, it worked, and still does. While binning up is more in the news, being a way for companies to keep public attention on their flagship (and loss leader) products, the real money is in binning down, as it lets them sell the 80% of any given initial production run which would otherwise have to be thrown away. While yields generally improve as the rough edges of a process are ironed out, the failure rate always stays high enough that being able to salvage some chips for sale to a lower end market is well worth the trouble.

for minecrafft ray tracing: until now shader mods were avaliable for the java version, the java version is the main version most ppl play and the main pc version rtx will run on the bedrock edition which is a later on developed game in cpp which were aimed on xbox, switch, smartphones and pc bedrock edition already performed better than the original minecraft in terms of loading the map the ray tracing shaders (there are plenty of them right now) run without the rt cores, in real 1080p (unlike the dlss upscaling thing) and perform much better on the rtx2060 for example, they can easily reach 60-80 fps on a gtx 1070-1080 or 5700-5700xt I want to point out that most of the java users dont will to change to the bedrock for many reasons, including the comunity, the mods and the servers

I think the Ryzen 3 line is just another front for AMD's contractual obligation to buy a certain amount of silicon from Global Foundries, I think it will be manufactured by Glo-Fo on an improved 12nm process. AMD has gotten around this obligation so far by using Glo-Fo to fab the Ryzen IO die + still selling the first two generations of Ryzen (also made by Glo-Fo. I'm going to make a wild guess here and say Ryzen 4000 will be a 7nm monolithic die and the reason AMD has rebooted the Ryzen 3 line is that they are going to try and shift the capacity that's used to make IO dies over to the Ryzen 3 series instead. so it needs to be much better, it makes sense they are ok with competing with themselves as the penalties for breaking the Glo-Fo contract will be much more detrimental.

Password managers are dumb. They represent a single point of failure in one's entire cyber-life -my university cybersecurity professor Literally writing down your passwords and taping them to the underside of your keyboard is more secure than using a password manager. This way, the only people that can ever hope to obtain all your plain-text passwords are people who have access to your home. If you can't trust the people in your house, you have bigger problems than passwords.

The thing with consoles is that they were originally made to be an inexpensive entry point for decent gaming. It's plug and play, simple and easy to use with no need to build a PC, or set up a prebuilt and install games etc (which was in the 90s, not something that had a wide user base. With increasing Cost-creep (bit like game power creep, it's going to price some people out of the market, as they wait 2-3 years for second hand or discounted consoles to go on sale.

It happened to me and they got busted. Someone had an email of mine and a password and wound up buying movie tickets from Fandango. They bought 8 tickets and the movie was to start in 5 hours. It was in a state across the country. I canceled the tickets and called their local law enforcement. Gave them the movie theater and time of the movie. They sent someone out. When a large group showed up and was denied entry due to bad tickets they got arrested. WIN!

Hearing that Seagate may have snuck smr into their products really pisses me off, I recently upgraded from a 2. 5 inch 7. 2k 1tb HDD to a 2. 5 inch 5. 4k 2tb, and I spent a long time trying to make sure I avoided any SMR drives as I knew they were slower. With 7. 2k 2tb drives not existing in laptop form factor I was already having to comprimise and go for a slower spinning one, at least it's not my OS drive.

ONY knows that if it limits the amount of PS5 Consoles it produces, then even when the bring it out at 600, the scalpers will snap them up and they will be sold for 900- 1, 000 (remember the crypto-mining prices for graphics cards anyone. What this means is when ONY then ramps up the production the price of 600 will be seen as a bargain in comparison. It is simply a marketdroid/salescritter trick.

thank you for clarifying that bullseye on the back model with hacking. I worked with a lot of non-tec-savvy people over the past years and one of the most important things to clarify is, that a hacker will never target you directly, and therefore will only put in minimal effort to get your data. If the standard methods will not work on your account, he won't even bother. It's not worth his time.
