Roku vs Google TV Who’s Got the BEST Streamer Lmao, i know this is a little older comparison. Anyone who wants to use chromecast, i encourage to monitor your network. Not just when its in use, but as soon as you plug it in and it has network access, its off to the races. I was shocked how much activity we were seeing while monitoring our network with wire shark. I only did it because of how slow everything got when i tried to use chrome cast. Even when it was supposed to be off, it was sending boat loads of traffic or packets.
I have used wire shark to monitor my network while using roku. It does have pretty good amount of traffic when you first turn it on until its dome and you shut it off, but nothing when its actually supposed to be off.\r\n

The Roku devices themselves are not quality. I am on my 4th in about 10 years because they just stop working. I have them on surge protectors and they are never bumped. They just stop and/or error out. Of those 4, I had 2 that had to be replaced by Roku, fresh out of the box. My 4th one is starting to show the signs so I feel I need to go with something else next. It is a shame. I really like the interface.

As a developer who worked on both Roku and Android TV, I can tell you Roku came a long way in making their OS more stable. I know because I fixed many of thescreen freeze issues for Roku. As a pure-play, Roku still the winner hands down. We will have to see if this remain true in the coming year or two. You are right, I too wish fewer licensing dramas with Roku. But hey its a juggle out there.

I actually prefer Roku. Texture remote isn't slippery buttons are clicker. More buttons and Roku doesn't have the video playback stutter that the chrome cast has. You don't see ads on Roku unless you go all the way right. Leave settings showing and no ads. Roku seems faster to start up apps I use like Paramount and Prime

That a piece of hardware can continue to generate revenue off of you through ads, after you have purchased it, infuriates me. Be like buying a fridge and every time you take out an apple the Pear Growers Association asks if you've tried pairs lately. You made it. I bought it. Our relationship should be finished.

So what would be the main reason or reasons why anyone would even consider streaming sticks etc. to begin with when Smart TV's already come with their own interfaces, OP's, Apps, etc. Call me slow but I'm just not quite getting it on what Smart TV's already are offering is not good enough

Roku wins.
Neutrality, Search, Ease of Use, and advertisements.
I don't care about parental controls, Recommendations, Sideloading, or the marginal difference between app availability. Roku wins in all the categories that matter.

reply

Wow, blatantly biased
Roku is not neutral, Netflix is always listed first where available. And why not, Roku was created and spun off by Netflix.
Roku interface is a mess.
You have no credibility....

I'm not sure why simplicity is seen as a positive. IMO Roku is too simple. So much that it hides features that should be accessible to user if they want it to be. A very Apple'esq approach and not in a good way.

My fav is the ONN Android box. Never freezes after update, very customizable homescreen, internal volume control, sideloading, web browsers (I use JioPages). They are supposed to add user profiles.

For twice the price, the Roku looks really janky and choppy. That’s important to me. The Chromecast just looks normal. But I really love that Roku remote with the Shortcuts.

All Roku is is a device for advertisement. That's all you get is advertisement every 3 minutes advertisement, The ad button does not help at all. Bull crap Roku sucks.....

Regular smart televisions
With just the apps on the bottom of the screen
That doesn't intrude on picture
Is the best in my opinion

I have a roku TV with an android box hooked to it. I have the best of both worlds. I can watch pretty much anything I want including live TV.
reply

Weirdly I have both but I have more issues with my Roku freezing up and restarting I've never had that issue with the Chromecast

I was salty about Roku not having Twitch anymore. Until I really started hating Twitch. Now I'm disappointed they don't have Kick.
reply

Can someone tell me what's the point of installing apps on your streaming device when it's just a device for streaming
reply

Does the Chromecast for TV restrict you to only casting via the Chrome browser like the regular Chromecast device
reply

What do you mean ruku doesn't allow you to add 3rd party apps. My pornhub app would disagree with you sir
reply

When it comes to apps and side loading. Roku is better. Roku has more apps. And Roku has twitch still.
reply

Roku has private listening feature while Chromecast lacks that feature. That's a deal breaker for me.
