TOP 5 WORST EXERCISES (Stop Doing These)

I've covered before why this is here. People will swear that they love the stretch they get on their pecs by doing this exercise. If you claim you never heard that argument, then you haven't spent enough time in the gym. They also claim that the adduction at the end of the movement gives them an incredible contraction on their chest. They're half right. There is no extra stretch on the pecs but they do increase the likelihood of injuring their pec with increasing loads held out at arms length. See the 3D crossover as a smarter (and better) option that you can overload even more and still get the benefits of the end contraction. 2. Behind the neck shoulder presses - The problem with this exercise is that it is bad for the shoulders. It places the glenohumeral joint in an awkward position for pressing, which can lead to impingement. Pressing from the natural scapular plane is much more natural and will allow you to press more weight overhead in the long run, leading to bigger shoulders. 3. Upright Rows - I've already discussed just how bad this exercise is for the integrity and health of the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder. What makes this shoulder exercise one of the worst is the position of the elbows and hands at the end of the movement. The exercise puts your shoulders into a provocative position for testing impingement. Instead, you want your elbows below your hands (as in the high pull) to still get the benefits of the abduction of the shoulders without the internal rotation. 4. Good Mornings - This is actually not a terrible exercise for your back as it loads the entire kinetic chain in a functional way. The problem is that most people don't have the necessary thoracic extension to pull it off with proper form. One slip up from here with the load positioned out in front of the body as it is, and you're likely to slip something else. a disc in your lower back. 5. Leg Extensions - This is a no brainer for me. This open chain leg exercise lacks any true function when compared to the numerous closed chain options you can be doing instead. Throw in the shear stresses, ACL tension, lack of hamstring co-contraction, and the imbalance of rectus to VMO firing and you've got a recipe for disaster. For safer (and better) exercise options it's time you start training like an athlete. Jeff, I appreciate your attempt to link exercises with science. I'm a physician scientist and have been in sports since my teenage. I'd like to slightly differ regarding your comments on dumbbell-fly. According to most anatomy-textbooks, the function of the pectoralis major muscle is abduction of shoulder joint while arms crossing over or in simple terms, hugging motion. Fly, pec-deck or cable cross over mimics that function better than the bench presses or push ups. So, you are right that the stretch at the bottom is not important in a dumbbell-fly but the peak contraction is one of the best exercises for chest. So, if you don't have any shoulder-problems, you should use it with other exercises. Flies give me a better pump compared to perfect wide push ups.

nah u got the flys wrong man. it might not increase the stretch much but the main thing that it's isolating the pectoral muscle and acts as a good range of motion to stimulate the whole pec. I didn't used to do flys right and with incorrect technique I can understand why u say flys are really bad for injury. but if u don't overload in weight and go for purely the correct technique before u move up weight then flys are great. as long as on the decent of ur arms u bring them down very slowly and controlled they're fine and u don't need to straighten ur arms they should have a slight bend. people Arnold Schwarzenegger say their favourite chest excersises is flys so it clearly works well, and it does with correct technique.

I've watched many of your videos and one thing you have helped me keep my eye on is -does the body naturally function this way? - I came here because of dumbbell goodmornings which are included in a guide I bought from a baddie on IG, thinking -But when does my body really ever do that? -. at the very least I'm not in the field of carrying anything on my back. AND it's my back, and I want to protect it. I'll save this move for the experts, as I know you approve of it with very proper form. Thank you for giving us the knowledge!

One of my knees started popping every time I walked last January. Coincidentally, I'd just started doing leg extensions again, after a long period of ditching them from all my routines.
I'm ditching them again. Don't want to risk it now that my knee has finally stopped popping like that. Took literal months to get rid of, and I'm simply relieved it didn't lead to long-term injury.

Just can't get behind the upright row, literally this movement is done every day (unless you sit behind a desk. In my line of work which is construction I must do that movement dozens of times a day. It's a natural movement and it's done practically every time you pick up something. Sorry, 63 years old, lifting all day, will continue upright rows, oh. my shoulders are fine.

My first shoulder dislocation was a result of one bad rep doing behind the neck shoulder press. Not a good look, didn't feel too nice either. Persistent chronic instability and repeated dislocations finally corrected with surgery and rehabilitation several years later. Also not a good look; i'll never forget waking up in recovery after that one.

I-ve had a bad experience with pull ups, I find that when you-re about to max out it-s very tempting to turn your head on the side, and that-s when a sort of rip happened on my upper back and neck. This exercise isn-t worth it if you can-t even carry a decent amount of weight before you start carrying your whole body-s weight.

Jeez! I literally did every single one of these exercises starting in high school. Sadly I did suffer from a lot of misinformation in those early years. I wish Jeff had all this going on back then. Athlean is by far the best training system (exercise, science, nutrition) etc, etc. Absolutely worth the price of admission.

I been doing fly's for years and it gives me the full pectoral pump and I have stretch marks from doing so because of how much my pecs have grown. If you want your chest to grow do NOT do bench press as this only builds strength and not size it's simple really just do fly's for growth. You are talking rubbish.

About 17 years ago my clavicle bone and left shoulder popped during a behind the neck military press. I was about 19 so I didn't even took it too seriously but I noticed loss of strength, constant pain and tightness since then in my left shoulder. Never became better. Does any of you experienced the same?
