Remember not to be held back by the fact that you may be so out of shape that even walking up the stairs feels like intense cardio. This will change pretty quickly if you actually learn to consistently push through it. Not only will it become exponentially easier with time, you will actually come to love it and even look forward to it. This goes for any type of physical exercise. Start where you can and soon enough you'll progress to where you want to be. And remember to always stretch and warm up before doing heavy lifting. At 40 we are at a point where we can no longer get away with sloppy starts to training sessions. Oil that machine up by doing dynamic stretches prior and static stretches after your session. It'll thank you for it.
