Too Much Rest Between Sets is KILLING Your GAINS! Patrick: I really like the time-under-tension concept, and connecting with the muscles at a lower weight, and I do this now consistently!
I try to make sure I'm doing at least eight reps (max twelve before increasing weight, which I'm guessing you would say is too few, and I should drop the weight more to get more reps in. The problem with lower rest times is that first of all I feel like I might literally pass out, and second I work at it really hard, and if I do ten reps of something and take three breaths before going at it again, there's no way I can get any more than maybe three reps in without failing. With big muscle exercises, like squats, I'm quite sure I would need to be hospitalized if I shorten my rest breaks.
Does this mean I'm pushing my first set too hard?

So, I have been training a long time. An ok 40 year old body at best. Since I put together a home gym, followed Ryans every video where the ego gets left, well, idk anywhere but the gym, I-ve made 100% gains. My problem the whole time; The gym. Yea it-s great to have selection and maybe a friend or two to catch up with and train with. But if you honestly want to grow, this guys got it down to a science. I-ve lowered the weight in almost every movement and increased the amount of volume to failure, usually between 15-30 reps. Just try it, leave the ego at the door and try. I have zero aches and pains and I-m actually able to recover in a timely fashion. Thanks Ryan

No rest for the upper body OK I do that, I do 4 exercise of shoulder in a row with 2-3min of rest at least between sets. But when it comes to back and legs. oufff, forget it man, if I don't rest at least 3-5min I'm going to vomit and not feel good. My cardio is sh-t when it comes to back and legs (like deadlift. And I need to not push myself too much in those sets because the counter effect oxygen needs after a set. Like I could push to lift 8-10 reps during a deadlift, I feel pretty good during the set, but when I finish, man it is like my metabolism wasn't ready for that lol so I usually stop at 6 reps.

So you dont bother to increase time under tension?
I used to do sets like this but it never worked for me - my arms just got lean and defined but not big (maybe my macros were too low.
Then i started doing slow reps and noticed increase in muscle.
I remember reading arnold Schwarzenegger and his partner used to never put the barbell down, just kept passing it back and forth.

The trouble with anecdotal evidence, is that what may work for those with good genetics, may not work for those who are average, or hardgainers. As much as Ryan likes to poo poo all over science, studies encompassing a greater pool of participants simply show that not getting enough rest between sets leads to more fatigue and lower volume. which leads to less muscle growth.

Ryan-s method is awesome, breaking the myth of 12 reps or higher builds endurance and you need to lift heavy compounds! I do think as he lifts limited range of motion he leaves part of the movement weak and not building joint health. For example not going down all the way with curls prevents you from making elbow strong. Also not sure if this method is ideal for athletes.

My issue is I smoked cigarettes for about 6 years and after a hard earned set I cant breathe for a little so I have to take a long break, I have since quit but it's still very difficult for me, I feel bad knowing the people around me in my crowded gym are waiting for me to f--- off, but there's not much I can do about it, besides trying my best to overcome it.

Good one. I don't understand why people sits and stares at the phone for 5 minutes between the sets. It's just annoying for the rest of us that just want to do our thing and get the hell out of there. If you want to rest more than you work out, go do it at home where there isn't someone waiting for the equipment you're currently using.

Only gym near me is a Planet Fitness. Stereotypes aside, they've (staff) been pretty cool.
Holy shit though. The other members are the problem. When I get after it like he did at the end (no yelling, slamming weight, etc). Just plain feel pain to get gains, I notice people looking.
I can see it on their face. Disgust.

Truth to this video.
Doing a hardcore set, then texting on your phone for 5 minutes before you do your next set is counterproductive.
I rest no longer than 10-30 seconds between each.
Supersets give even bigger gains.
The only muscle I don't superset is legs because. legs.
