This video isn't like anything I have EVER done before, and it all started with a few questions I had. Why do we allow our weight to control our feelings? Why do we give the scale so much power? What does BMI really mean? Is body fat percentage actually a better indicator of health? I decided to gather a bunch of women together to run a little social experiment to find out how all of these things - BMI, weight, body fat percentage - actually looked like on a woman. And I wanted to see if we could tell which was most accurate. Or would we find out that labels are bogus? I started planning this video a year ago, and I had NO IDEA how to pull it off. Fast forward to shoot day and we had a 20+ person crew working on it AND we flew out one of the world's best female bodybuilders. from Sweden! So crazy! Parts of this video were extremely uncomfortable to film, but I hope you guys take away the fact that there is so much more to a person than their number. I have so many people to thank for making this video happen - my amazing director Ryan, my husband Sam, the crew, the Blogifam. but most of all I want to thank all of the brave, strong women for speaking their truths. You all are amazing! I think the main problem with this video is that feelings are being put along categories designed to help healthcare professionals to make decisions in what type of care they're going to suggest/provide to a person. BMI and body fat percentages are parameters, they might not be perfect but it's what we have now and they are useful to understand the nutritional status of an individual. A well trained professional knows that you can't use one indicator to make an adequate assessment and this is what I would have liked to see, not how they feel. Without the proper context and explanation of what each indicator means, most people would simply feel sad. The categories, the numbers are not there to make someone feel bad, they're just objective indicators that have a specific purpose that has nothing to do with feelings. It perplexes me how telling someone they have a high body fat percentage is automatically equated to destroying them, no, it's like reading a blood test, it's one indicator that can help assess your nutritional status. I am much more concerned about the hyper sensitivity of not being able to have honest conversations with healthcare professionals for fear of hurting someone's feelings. Obviously this is a sensitive topic and you should exercise empathy when addressing this but without lying to the person. RD/ND here.

Funny how crazy human bodies are.
Weight wise, I weight closer to the body builder lady and the girl in the black top/red leggings. ( CW is 88. 3 kg / 194. 6 lbs) yet visually and height wise, my body and frame looks eerily similar to the girl in the beige top (160 lbs range. Sometimes I feel that I look way smaller than I should be looking at that weight. So weird. And not I am not even tall, I am like 5'2' on a good day. Also the BMI thing I stopped giving a crap about BMI the moment I was told I my BMI wasn't healthy back when I used to weigh between 110lbs-120lbs and training at the gym. I only trust my eyes now and how healthy I feel in my daily life according to my habits ( nutrition, exercise, good sleep, water intake etc)

Body builder scares me, after listening to her reactions though, she is just regimented yet very empathetic. My mischaracterization is rooted in being pushed around by bullies. These women are not a random group as they all are very likable, I can't say that about random women. Being classed as obese since I could remember, feels like getting an F no matter what. We are built to move, just stay active in anything your heart content. Those numbers are there to sell you something. Believe in your higher power, you body will thank you latter.

This is particularly fascinating because it's extremely easy to see who should be the same weight as another. There are clearly other fsctors that went into their reasoning. I have two main ideas. One is that their perceptions about their own weights were inaccurate and skewed the results (whether each woman perceived herself as too heavy or too light. The other is that they were more worried about not offending each other during the matching process than actually being correct. Or perhaps it's a combination of both!

The two overwheight women are probably very healthy (body fat 26% and 29%, if their diet is in balance. From what I've heard, women who have more body fat, especially if we're talking lower body, are healthier and more fertile. Now, obviously obese is another thing but historically female health and fertility has always been associated with curves, and for a good reason! It really makes me think that BMI is more geared towards men than women.

The conclusion that you cannot judge someone's health based on how you look is just wrong. Sure, you can't judge all aspects, but take the lady with the 40% body fat percentage and yes, just looking at her you can judge aspects of her health from using your eyes alone. In less extreme cases it becomes harder to not possible, but such blanket statements are rather silly.

I'm 5'6 145lbs with 12. 3% Body fat. And I don't mind this low percentage of fat but sometimes I want to have a bit more there but I like it when people say you look like a boxer or you look like you play good in certain sports just because of my appearance There's good and bad everywhere. Just enjoy yourselves

It was kinda nice seeing the rude yoga lady being taken down a leg when she found out the super sweet nutritionist had less body fat: ) the body builder was also so graceful about weight and being compassionate to the gal who was her weight, it was very nice to see! Id love to see more videos like this!

My belief for the BMI and BF% is it sucks. People with issues such as eating disorders, perfectionism, etc. may be labeled healthy but in reality, aren't (mentally. So yes, they may have a low BMI and BF% but I think mental health is way more important than just a number whether it's on a scale or not.
