Ed Bastian, the CEO of Delta Air Lines sat down with me, a customer who flies more than 140, 000 miles with Delta Airlines every year. In this interview, Ed Bastian discussed his role, the Delta Difference, and the future of the passenger experience at Delta and beyond. The role of CEO of Delta Air Lines is a pretty interesting Airline Executive position and Ed Bastian has a unique perspective on the industry, Delta Airlines, (and its 80, 000+ employees. I sent an email to Ed Bastian, the Delta CEO, on a whim. I didn't expect to hear back, but I did. within just a few minutes! Delta CEO Ed Bastioan was eager to connect with the folks who watch this channel. It was an opportunity for him to speak with you! It's not that often that an Airline Executive gets to sit down with a customer and camera. Watch to the very end to find out what this leader thinks of the future of the Passenger Experience

Great interview. I have been flying Delta for decades. I remember their bumpy times in the late 90's and early 2000's. I think that is when Delta got serious about creating a better customer experience. I am glad to hear that the Delta executive team realizes that their success is with their people. I talk to the flight crews on almost every flight I am on. Great wonderful people. I always fill out the Delta survey and call out flight crew by name to specifically thank them for making my flight a great experience. I fly Delta not because of price but because of the people from flight crew to reservation specialists and everyone else that impacts my safe and on time flights. Thanks to all of them. I hope that Ed Bastian strongly believes that without the great front line people of Delta the airline is just a bunch of heaps of metal sitting around.

As a supplier and customer, this man would never have sat down with me or anyone from my company. But you and Sam Chui bring him revenue. We dealt with people 2-3 rungs below him and they of course are ruthless assholes and he loves it that way. I have watched Delta bankrupt suppliers. But guess what, Continental my old alma mater was even worse, and American literally steals from virtually every industry supplier. I do applaud Delta for taking our advice for consolidating fleet types, but then hated them for prematurely converting out of that very same type. We did also suggest that they buy their own oil refinery which has worked out well. I don't blame them for telling Boeing to take a hike and going with Airbus either, but it was a sloppy ugly mess that pissed a lot of people off.

OK, I have been a Delta fan since junior high, I live in Northern Kentucky, my love for Delta started really in High School driving through Ft. Mitchell, KY on my way to a relatives house and looking up out the window of my parents car and seeing this huge Delta plane flying over head going in for a landing at CVG. That was my calling I knew it, I felt it. I tried getting on with Delta for 25 years and it never happened. Not sure what happened, I applied every 6 months sending my Delta applications to ATL. Unfortunately I never heard from them. I have flown on Delta numerous times, never had an issue. I am much older now, still love my airport. I still love Delta and aviation and always will.

Delta has dipped its toe a few times into the political arena and I think that is by far the worse mistake it has made. I'm not happy they retired the 747, didn't buy the A380 nor the B787. That said, they are ahead of their domestic competitors, but miles behind their international competition. Their fleet of 75s and 76s is archaic and dilapidated. Their lounges in many places are dirty and undesirable and they charge a premium on routes covered by their new A350 service. I gave up status a couple of years ago and started going Southwest.

Its a tough business and invariably the cycles are the same. Even a top notch operator like delta isnt immune. It starts at the bottom where a carrier is at the bottom of the falls bobbing around after plunging over them. Theres been an extended period where wages and costs have been going up and suddenly a crisis hits - 911, gfc, oil shock, pandemic. We know the playbook - pensions and wages evaporate, government handouts and restructurings ensue. Delta just granted a 34% increase in pilot pay.

Ed talking about the value of Delta staff made me reflect on Herb Keller and his belief that people/culture made Southwest so successful.
My disappointment with Delta is as an investor, the stock has significantly underperform the S&P for the last 3 years. Delta investing $20B in the product is great, I just hope the market rewards its stock price.

MR. Ed, why Delta doesnt have a big foot print in Texas or the southwestern part of the US? Can you believe Houston the fourth largest city does not have a direct Delta flight to any city in Latin America? We have to fly to Atlanta and then take another plane from there. That something not very fun to do in the busiest airport in the US.
reply

Delta is my airlines, living in NE Fla I can go anywhere from Atlanta. The best airport in North America. Ive reached the point in life where I am thinking much more about international travel. This has reassured me that I can expect an excellent product in the future. Wont be long before I reach the million mile mark, keep it up Delta.

Hes a very good man. Will he continue to have the premium pricing power in the marketplace over AA and United. Hes certainly not timid. Huge investments in JFK/ LAX/ SLC. If the employee stays ahead of shareholders like they should be in a business where you have to have the field on your side in hard times he may pull it off.

Hey Jeb! I remember in the late eighties, being in the I. T. department at Delta, seeing Mr. Bastian over the cubicles I was in. Thanks so much for bringing this to your medium. We always thought of Mr. Woolman, and it was very real. I really like your take on things - would love to meet you one day.

Okay off topic but you are a talented, talented speaker. You have an amazing, calming yet strong & confident voice. Thank you so much!
Im interviewing with Delta on the 19th of February in Cincinnati! I heard youre a Delta Diamond! Do you have any tips for being an amazing flight attendant?

I've never been outside of Europe but since I was a teen I've wanted to fly with Delta to the US. Don't know why, I think it's just that they sound like a good airline to fly with and I like what I've heard about their whole company culture and everything. One day I will fly on them.

preciate that and Eds vision is being realized DL employee work is allot but we are equipped to help customers that is why we can say we have the best customer service and we do our best to live up to all exceptions. DL Airlines the best ever. ps ive never been on a plane

I had the worst experience with Delta in 2008 and swore Id never fly with them again! To this day, whenever I choose a flight I avoid them like the plague! Interesting to hear his thoughts and i appreciate the interview but Im not hoping on their metal anytime soon!

This was a great interview. Delta and their employees really do make this product great. I have been flying Delta all over the world since 1985. Always my go to choice in an airline. Thank you, Jeb, for a great video.

I never knew you did this interview. What a day! I'm a Delta flyer with Silver status (baby status haha) out of SLC and I always have a great experience with Delta. Good to hear from him directly. Nice job Jeb!

What a dick. Folded to the woke and charged $200/month to his own employees who didnt want to get vaccinated. Unreal. Im vaccinated, but I would have quit immediately just based on the communist approach.

Oh, how I wished I could have been your camera operator on this. He should have been in focus! Great that you had this opportunity. And thank you for this. Delta is my favorite airline.

Im glad Ive been on both the 757 and MD-88 with Delta. Ive also been on their crj-900 and their 737-900. All very good, Delta is still my favorite cant wait to try them more in the future.

From ICN, they are switching the NRT-MNL to ICN-MNL to along with the US bound routes. Should be an interesting play given KE also serves the route with x17 weekly flights using heavies.

Do you by any chance know his email? It's been a childhood dream of mine since 5th grade (I'm starting 8th) to talk to the Delta CEO and I want to be a delta pilot when I grow up. Thanks!

What a difference between this and Doug Parker (American Airlines) who says he would make coach even more uncomfortable if the flight attendant's union hadn't forced him not to.

Ive flown delta, amazing and spellbinding (2 words I hardly use towards an airline [exluding qantas and Singapore as there the only other airlines with these 2 words])

I had a great experience with delta last year and I really enjoyed it. Im from Canada so I found them to be like Americas westjet and miles better than air Canada
reply

I am a loyal Delta flyer. I'm in a wheelchair, and the Delta staff treat me like a princess. I'm so well cared for, why would I fly any other airline?
reply

I really think that delta is the US airline who has the closest ties to Europe and foreign regions rather than other US airlines and manufacturers

Great interview. A Leader that clear gets Employees Matter. Happy Employees lead to Happy Customers. Pretty simple, but lot of companies do not get it.
