This is the second and final video in my series AMTRAK-ing Across America by train Tidal: By far the best You Tube Video of the many that have been done on the Chicago to Los Angeles Amtrak trip.
Not surprised. Typical of the Travel Videos you and your wife do. The Peru Train Travel Video you did is in a class of its own.
I took the trip in this Video many times back and forth as a kid in the 1950s and 1960s. The Santa Fe El Capitan in those days. When it went through Pomona and Pasadena on the way to and from Los Angeles. Then switched trains and train stations in Chicago. Went to and from our final destination of Cleveland via the New York Central each trip. A lot of fun.

I'm heading to LA on one of those Thanksgiving day. I'm surprised they don't have Wi-fi on it. Last time I took it to LA, a bad update borked my phone before I left Chicago and I was hoping to undo it by downloading a new update, but I ended up having to wait until I hit LA two days later to fix it.
I only wish I had been able to get one of the sleepers. Trying to sleep in one of those regular seats was a nightmare, but I intend to be ready this time. I'm bringing some of the Thanksgiving turkey I'm making with me, so that should knock me right out: )

I enjoy your train trips across this great country Jeb, oh by the way I know that hundreds must have said that the city of Raton is still in northern New Mexico before me. But I still needed to post it. The wife and I and some of our grandkids have taken the train from Albuquerque up to Santa Fe (the Rail Runner Express) many times, for the day. Doing the Famers Market and lunch across the Train station parking lot at Tomasita in Sants Fe, great New Mexico food.

Forgive me if others have already commented, but I'm pretty confident those are the Spanish Peaks at 14: 20 as opposed to Pike's Peak. They don't hit the coveted 14, 000' mark, but like Pike's they stand out prominently from the plains, so it's an easy mistake to make, even from 150 miles south of CO springs. As you commented, the area also has a longer history of European settlement than the Pike's Peak region as well.

I use the Accessible Handicapped Room because I use a wheelchair. (I Have MS) The room is spacey, I Have my own toilet and wash sink, shower room is next door, I have a large space to store my wheelchair I ride in comfort, and the price is reasonable. I am a big fan of your travel blogs Jeb. I am an avid AMTRAK rider! I live five hours from Seattle. HAPPY TRAVELS. and see you on the rails or the air!

You want a fun fact about the Lamar/La Junta, Colorado area. Every year they have the annual migration of the tarantulas where literally thousands and thousands of them migrate through the area crossing roads and whatever else is in there way. It is a true spectacle of Mother Nature and a sight to behold. Think of that the next time you're passing through.

I hope we develope more train travel in this country. With high gas prices, as well as the polution, I think rail travel could be a real plus. I love taking the train, whenever I can. For me though, living in rural Oregon, the nearest train station is an hour away. Not convenient at all. .Thanks for these videos. I love watching them.

Id say the hardest part of going cross country by train is picking what route to take. I want to take a circle journey of the country someday staying a few days in certain cities. I live in southern New Jersey so Ive decided on starting going Philly to New York, New York to Chicago, but I cant decide what route to do once I hit Chicago.
reply

Did this route in 1995 & loved it. got off at Lamy for Santa Fe & stayed there for a week before getting back on the train to finish the route to Los Angeles. I travelled coach and the most difficult element was the stops during the night and the very chatty passengers who just wanted to hear me talk with my British accent!

Love taking Amtrak. Ive done the Zephyr, Coast Starlight and Empire Builder. We split the Coast Starlight trip in two - we had a Roomette from LA to Emeryville and then a bedroom to Seattle. Personally, having a bedroom is the only way to go. I would like to do the Southwest Chief one of these days.

You're so lucky to live in a place like that! I do love your Country and I've been there several times but I've never thought I could visit it by train. it should be really a great experience with my two kids. I can't wait to get back! unfortunately, this economic crisis is not helping

I agree! I don't know why the observation car isn't packed to the gills with time limits! When I was on a similar train (Sunset Limited) I too stayed there much of the day and some of the night unless I wanted to recline or sleep in my assigned comfy chair.
reply

In these old stations (admittedly during the pandemic) even though these Amtrak lounges have comfy chairs, they look like they were built in converted restrooms! I'd almost rather sit on the hard chairs in the main terminal for the ambiance and echo.

I love traveling by train so far me and my son have done California to Flagstaff Arizona Then from Arizona to Chicago Ive loved trains since I was a child my mom and I would travel from Los Angeles Union Station down into San Diego 2 times a year

I took 4 Amtrak trains (San Diego to Riverside-Riverside to Chicago-Chicago to Washington D. C. - And D. C. to Fayetteville, NC, all the way in coach. By the end, I was very, very, very envious of those in sleepers.
reply

Im riding the Southwest chief right now, I boarded in Newton KS and we just left Gallup, one thing I love is the faint sound of the horn every couple of seconds. And Id argue that coach is better than a sleeper
reply

Sorry you skipped over Missouri. La Plata is the cutest little station with the most Virtual Railfan viewers in the country. And the magnificent Kansas City Union Station is not to be missed.

I remember taking the California Zephyr from chicago to winter park Colorado. After a week of skiing and snowboarding, we decided that 2 sleepers would be the best way to go!

Next time you take the southwest chief, if its westbound and on time, 5am is just outside Dodge City. Eastbound, it will be my home of Lawrence, Kansas.

How many engineers drive the long distance trains & how long are their shifts? Also, what accomodations do the staff have & what are their shifts like?
reply

I'm late to post this since I just found you on here. You pass right by our condo at the 7: 15 mark in this video. I'll wave at you next time!
