Is Aspen Airport the USA's Most Extreme Airport?

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport may be the most extreme airport in the USA. Its got a relatively short and narrow runway, surrounded by mountains, subject to unpredictable weather, and requires unusual operations to safely operate. In short, simply getting to Aspen is an adventure because it is the most extreme airport in the USA

As a potential future Airports Revealed subject, you might check out MEM. The airport officials there were giving periodic community outreach tours pre-pandemic. I had gotten a spot on one, but it became a Zoom-cast because of the pandemic. The passenger side has been depressing the past few years - a classic 1960's/70's terminal mostly vacant in the wake of being de-hubbed by Delta, but they're in the middle of renovating B concourse (and eventually mothballing A and C after the airlines move into B. But the cargo side, with the FedEx superhub.
The renovation/reconstruction of concourse B is supposed to be complete sometime this summer. I imagine airport officials would love to do some show-and-tell as they wrap up.

SkyWest pilot here! The interesting thing about our Aspen ops is that the pilots have what's known as a DMA schedule (Designated Mountainous Airports. The bulk of their flying each month is into these DMA airports which have these special departure/arrival procedures. Not to mention that they are re-tested on these (either in the simulator or on the line with a line check captain) every six months. In other words, these pilots go into Aspen and other DMA airports multiple times a week and truly know what they're doing!

Great video Jeb! Wow Aspen is amazing but since Im not rich Ill probably never fly their on a Gulfstream someday like I dream of! Also American Eagle has brought back the CRJ-200 now! WHY! I dont understand but still. Also if I ever visit ASE I will probably try to make an in depth behind the scenes #INSIDEAIRPORTS video at Aspen. Finally at 5: 42 thats the music Paul Stewart uses!
Cheers my friend

Great review! I have fond memories flying into and out of Aspen in the early 2000s on United BAE-200s (awesome aircraft btw, and being subject to the infamous weather delays and cancellations. I was surprised to see a 737 business jet on the ground in Aspen in your footage! That larger aircraft must be approved to fly there in some capacity?

You need to do an Airports Revealed on Denver International Airport. One of the few major airports I have yet to see you cover. I really enjoyed this Aspen video. I've only ever driven there, so it's neat to see the terrifying approach into our (Colorado's) Mountain airport.

Like your videos, great job. Thanks for doing them. Have you flown into the Juneau, Alaska airport on a cloudy day? Even on a rare sunny day, you look up, out your window and see trees and mountains whizzing on by. Aspen is a piece of cake, try Juneau.

I live in north Louisiana and Dfw is our main hub airport that we fly to and catch our flight to our final destination from. I'm not joking when I say it takes longer to taxie from the runway to the gate at DFW than the flight to get there

If you're looking for a place that includes everything you said about Aspen, but is even more remote and unique give Ketchikan Alaska a visit. Definitely the coolest airport I've ever had the pleasure to visit.

Would love to see a review on the airport in walla walla Washington ALW. alaska is the only airline that flys here, we are a really small airport and one of the only in the usa to offer free parking!

It's actually really heartening to hear you give thanks to the folks who were able to build this airport and acknowledge the work that went into it. It's great to hear someone not overlook that!

Pretty approach! I flew the approach in the flight sim, had to go around because I couldnt see the ground at minimums and had to go around. (may or may not have crashed into a mountain)

Definitely would recomend approach at SDU. One of the most scenic approaches in the world. With a short runway, closest most will have to landing in an aircraft carrier.

A video about best connection hubs would be great. In normal times, I travel a significant amount and are always choosing between different hubs to connect through.

Jen compare it to Lake Tahoe airport sometime! Never landed at either one(scared to fly) but being married to a private pilot have heard all the stories!

Great video Jeb! The runway approach reminds me a lot of my European hometown LJU when flying from north across the Alps. The views are just spectacular.

You have a fun job, you get to travel all around the world while reviewing everything about it. Just one question, how do I get that job?
reply

This reminds me a lot of HDN - Steamboat Springs, only that airport can handle much bigger planes, and has much more commercial traffic.

9: 39 Is that a BBJ I see there? I didn't know they had aircraft that large flying into Aspen. even on the corporate aviation side.

Went for some weekend skiing in Snowmass and I flew in with Skywest into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport from ORD. Just came back yesterday

If you like such special airports, take a look at Innsbruck, Austria (INN, where there is even a bend in the final approach!

Airports Revealed at DFW would be awesome. Check out Founders Plaza on the north side for some good plane-spotting as well!

As much as I agree that the 200 is a POS, the 145 is a far worse experience for passengers than the 200. Trust me on that one.

I also noted that your creative director is sporting a large rock on her third finger, left hand. Business must be booming!

You should do on on JAC, Jackson Hole Airport, WY. Only airport completely within the boundaries of a National Park (Teton.
reply

Laguardia: approach isn't that hard, but if you screw it up over Brooklyn/Queens you get thousands of ground casualties.
reply

with the potential for delays and canceled flights would you recommend flying into a different airport in December?
reply

Can we talk about how smooth that GoPro footage is on a suction mount? You know the vibrations were heavy.
reply

You should do KHTS. It is a very interesting airport. It is on that pilot certification list you showed
