If you love commercial aviation action, you have to come to THIS beach! It's such an incredible Low Landing Beach Airport that I overheard a guy ask his wife, Is this real! There are only a handful of places in the world where you can get up close and personal with active airplanes. And theres no place on earth quite like Maho Beach on the island of St. Maarten and its unbelievable Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM. In this video, youll see the best viewing spots AND get a sense for what its like to get caught in the jet blast from a HUGE 757 powering up for departure! Youll see the Sunset Bar & Grill, arguably the worlds best beach bar. At least for Aviation Enthusiasts. Youll even find out the best hotel on the island for aviation enthusiasts!

I have now been there twice. Loved it both times! During the first visit back in 2015, I stayed at the Sonesta Resort (on the other end of the beach. Unfortunately the hotel was damaged in the recent hurricane. I had a go pro with me and got some pretty cool shots of all the action. When it came time for the KLM 747 to take off, I was about 50 feet out in the water, ready to film, when I got blasted with sand, water, wind, and a few hats! It was WILD! The second time, did a little more exploring of the island. The rest of the island still feels like paradise, just without the planes constantly flying overhead. If your trip was as much fun as mine were (and based on this video, it was, then I say the beach gets a perfect 25/25 on the JebScore- Beach edition!
Planes, sand, views, weather, and waves!
Loved the video!
Also, I can confirm. Sand burn is definitely a thing!

I was on Maho Beach between Feb 9 th and Feb 16 th, I did the jet blast challenge with the 757 and the A330 ( the only one that took off to the East that week, simply awesome, the best week of my life. I stayed in the Resort at the opposite side of the runway, Sonesta Maho Beach, I was upgraded to the Signature status and I have to say that the service and the food were amazing, worth every penny. How was your stay at Morgan Resort? I'm already planning my next trip to SXM in 2023 and I doubt that I would change sides after the food experience with Sonesta, but the views from Morgan side seems to be better and plane spotting is a real passion for me, so you never know. Glad to see you enjoyed the Island as much as I did!

Love it! Brings back some memories! :D
I stayed at the exact same hotel as you in 2012. Back then it was called the Caravanserai, and it was a nice place to be - my brother and I spent hours standing on the roof filming Air Canada 767s, Air Transat A330s, Amerijet Boeing 727s and much more!
I seem to recall due to a breach of contract, wherein the Caravanserai wasn't allowed to offer timeshares (we had taken one with our RCI points the previous year with the hotel, it was forced to close in about 2013, and our timeshare was rendered null and void. Good to see the place has reopened under a new guise, the swimming pool looking over towards Saba was gorgeous! :D

Got to stop by on a cruise in 2018. Had long been a dream of mine to visit. Parked at a table at the bar, a bucket of beers and watched for a few hours. Even my wife, who does not share in my love of aviation thought it was great. My son, who had just turned 3 loved every second. My only complaint was that day, the only airliner we got to see was a JetBlue A320. Would love to go back and spend more than a day there.

hey, i live on the island of Sint Maarten! thanks for coming over, hope you enjoyed! also, i agree, Maho beach is the best place for planespotting! personal favorite beach on the island. thanks for visiting!
edit: for the sign, its because a pady in 2017 got killed by the jetblasts of a departing 737. i recommend anyone coming over to Maho to be VERY CAREFUL when planes takeoff.

When I went for my honeymoon in 2004 riding the fence was a big deal. You were able to go up to the fence and hang on for dear life. Which I did with a KLM 747. It was pure chaos. People flying off the fence, breaking bones. Definitely, the craziest thing I've done in my life. That sand stings like crazy when it's kick up

Jeb, me and my girlfriend just got back from SXM. Can't forget about Grand Case airport as well, where the ATR pilots use reverse thrust while lining up during takeoff to get every foot available. We loved Driftwood boat bar on Maho beach (the bar is a big boat) I highly recommend. Cheers!

Ive been to this airport 3 times! I still remember the first time back in 2010 when I stood behing a Boeing 727 taking off, one man started bleeding in the back due to all the sand being blown into him by the three rear engines. Then in 2011 I saw a Tui 747 land, really cool!

I grew up next to an Air Base. If I'm going on vacation, I want quiet. NGL my man, who grew up in Iraq, absolutely LIVES for the airport. When his family visits, they want to visit a park where we can picnic, day or night, and literally touch the planes landing. They LOVE it.

Its my HOME ISLAND. PROUD TO BE SXM. Its always amazing when airplane land and take off. the last 747 took off in 2017. Also back in the days Insel Air used to come close to the railings can give it the full throttle and people would fly into the water.
reply

Take my word for it.
YOU GET BLOWN AWAY.
Went with my gopro in november 2019 and AF499 blew me into the water.
Got it on gopro so i am happy.
Little did i know the quads would never see the island again.

Maho Beach! One of my favorite places in the world. Sipping an ice cold Sol bought out of a cooler right on the beach while floating in the turquoise waters and watching planes fly just overhead. GREAT way to spend a day!
reply

I absolutely LOVED that beach. I went to St. Maarten a couple years ago and I swear I could sit there and watch the planes go right over my head for hours. It was insane, I wanna go back so bad one day
reply

Jeb, you forgot to mention that at the Sunset Beach Bar and Grille they have a radio/scanner tuned to the ATC frequency and a surfboard/chalkboard with incoming flight times of the larger aircraft. Way cool place.
reply

The best plane spotting imo for jets is point woronzof in anchorage when theyre landing runway 15. Planes are very close, and you see 747s 777s, a340s, dc6s, and my favorite MD11s
reply

I've been once. I hope to do it again. I heard a woman died there a few years ago. Did you make it to the airport on the French side? A day trip to anguilla is a good idea too.
reply

We were there about a week after you. My older son love airplanes and we spent a couple of hours on the beach. It is a great place!
But what's up with the commuter trijets?

reply

Went there in April of 2018 on a cruise. Its a really cool place to check out. And it feels weird/awesome that theres theres jets landing right above your head on the beach.
reply

Marys Boon Beach Resort in my opinion might be the best hotel for spotting on the island has a third floor observation deck right at the rotate point for the big jets
reply

If you are in Los Angeles and are driving to LAX, the planes come in over the street just feet about the cars. It is really a great feeling when they are landing.
reply

My brother has been living there for 30 years, so I can't even keep count of how many times I've been to SXM. I could smell the fuel just watching those take-offs!
reply

Funny we booked this exact hotel and trip, then I saw your videos here! We'll plan that Egypt trip another year when the world calms down. if it doesn't implode.
reply

Jeb, I remember another bar, in the opposite, where our beer flyed away for the Klm 747 jet blast during rotation to line up runaway. From Italy, Riccardo
reply

One of my finest memories was in 2011, holding on to the fence and experiencing the KLM 747 doing a full throttle run up before take off. That was a thrill!
reply

We stopped at St Marteen on a cruise. I didnt make it to the beach but I was kayaking in the bay when a 757 took off and flew just over our heads!
reply

The onion rings not being great is so sad. There's nothing better than a bomb onion ring, except maybe a tropical beach right on an airport
reply

At 1: 11 my heart stopped but then realized - optical illusion: ) Great video and love the shot of you both at 5: 08 - happiness: -)
reply

That place has been on my list for a few years now. Would have loved to gone when the 747s were still coming but you can't have everything.
reply

That sign was not overkill. I am pretty sure a person died due to a jet blast causing her to bang her head on a rock and die to her injuries
reply

If I was to ever go to St. Maarten and attempt standing in that jet blast, I would definitely do it without my contact lenses in!
