Life After a Thru-hike LMB925: I really hope people aren't inspired to stop wearing deodorant. I live in FL and you can tell when people don't wear deodorant for sure. They obviously can't smell themselves, but the BO is there and it is vomit causing.
I used to work with someone who thought she didn't need to use soap, or shower everyday. She commented on how she just rinsed off. She had no clue how bad she smelled because people are nose blind to their own scents, and no one wanted to tell her. She smelled like ass. Really, like ass. She'd open the office door first thing in the morning and the front lobby filled with BO. I had a hard time even talking to her because I couldn't breath. Co-workers all talked about how bad it was, but no one said anything to her.
My grandmother's 3rd husband was the same way. He had a decade old can of Right Guard and thought it still worked. He was ex-military and took showers that lasted about a minute, no exaggeration, a minute and he did a ton of outdoor work. He had a horrible metallic smell and we all held our breath around him. He had no idea how bad he smelled or how sick he made us. We couldn't even eat around him. Also, we get a lot of foreigners here in FL that don't wear deodorant as part of their culture. It's bad, especially when you're in a restaurant and they come in and you have to leave so you don't vomit, Clearly it doesn't bother them, but most people who wear deodorant can really tell when others don't and have low tolerance for the lack of it.
All that said, not trying to be negative, I love these videos and am very impressed, but it's one thing not to wear deodorant on the trail and an entirely different thing to not wear it in normal society and I'm just hoping people aren't encouraged to stop wearing deodorant every day. Obviously it's a personal choice, but I don't think most people would skip deodorant if they knew how offensive they can smell to others who are too polite to tell them.

I remember being in Diego Garcia when I was in the Navy. I felt as though it was incomplete without my family. It was so impossible to share with them these experiences and especially the actual military operations. You say in the world. We use to call it the world, back at home. If your experience is similar to a veterans experience, you'll never be the same again. Being in the Navy and telling them about it was just not something that I could do and expect a reciprocal conversation. Interesting, maybe that's why at 59, I hike and get out of the world, so to speak.

I really would like to hike the AT. It's one of my life goals. It's not so easy as I have a wife that, while she is my hiking partner, would not accompany me on the trail. And there's no way I can leave her, my business, my home, my pets for 6 months.
That part makes me already see the regret when I am an old man reflecting back on my life and accomplishments. That I didnt do it. and I would regret not doing it on my death bed.

Will Dupuis is correct. After returning home from the war, minus the PTS of course, it's sort of the same feeling. Your entire perspective, thus attitude changes because you are more enlightened now, and it's constantly in your face just how enslaved to society ppl are. We don't need all this crap! Debt being the device to ensure we stay that way. Our stuff owns us.

Hi Jessica,
YOU have motivated me to attack a fourteener here in Colorado!
You made a great point about the high of doing something and then when you come home there is a bit of a transition time. my quotes not yours.
It is like many of us returning from overseas.
You probably won't ever see this but. you actually mentioned something

I really want to see you get the Triple Crown Dixie. I think if anyone deserves the title it's you. I look back when you first started and wow it's crazy to think you had never camped before and where you are now. Love you and all you do. Keep the vids coming because I would be lost without them. Thanks again Dixie.

Thanks for sharing. Your post trail experiences were much like my 20, 000 mile 4 month road trip where I lived and camped out of my car and drove across country up to AK. Excited that you discovered this as a young woman. I was in my late 50s. Rock on sweet woman.

I know it as re-entry. My extended stays in the Colorado mtns. did many of the things to me you describe. Especially smell, I still cannot wear cologne and for years was unable to walk down the chemical isle at the grocery. Woot!

Hi Dixie. I had very similar feelings when I returned home from my 2 year stint in the Peace Corps. I really like what you have to say and your observations resonate with me! Thanks.
