Stalked By Wild Deer On Pacific Crest Trail

Location: Shasta-Trinity National Forest, California. Pacific Crest Trail 41. 1284 -122. 0267 After talking to this deer for a minute, I started hiking and later noticed it was running down the trail after me. Then it just kept following me. It's possible she was waiting for me to take a bathroom break so she could drink it for the salt. I don't really know what was going on, but it was one of the most amusing animal encounters I've had in the wild. PCT Episode With This Clip: PCT Full Documentary: Since I had to cut short a recent backpacking trip due to an emergency at home, I won't be able to produce a new video for this week. But I thought it'd be cool to post some of my favorite animal/nature encounters from my thru-hikes this week so they can exist as their own clips rather than in the middle of longer videos. For one, there are probably quite a few subscribers who haven't seen them all, and two, I kind of want to make it easier for myself to find them, too!

I used to whistle, because I cant sing, for dear on a wildlife refuge zone I was working at and they will get very close if curious and doing something that sounds nice can bring em in. Every day after work waiting on a pickup from a couple guys working half a mile up the road I would sit there and whistle marine and sing marine corps running cadence. They started coming by closer and closer. The more I whistled star wars imperial march of all things, the closer they got. So they can be genuinely curious. We definitely did not feed them.

31 years a go I was working for the Forest Service at an out station and went on an over night hike in the wilderness and had this happen. I later walked up on a Cougar it just watched me and when I retreated back the 2 deer kept following me which was unnerving. The following year we had a fire in the same area and the deer would follow us and come into our camp at night. I always wondered if they were curious, had been fed by others, or stayed close because of danger. I know they could run faster than me. ;)

She's looking for food dropped on the trail. Probably salty snacks. Hawk filmed a black bear this year on the AT walking down the trail. He was going to take a short path to an overlook but the bear headed that way first. So he passed it by. The bear was checking the overlook for dropped food because he probably was most likely to find it there because of hikers taking lunch breaks at overlooks.

Funny. I just got back from hiking Golden Trout Wilderness, and a coyote followed me for about a mile. If he'd stayed to see me pitch my tent, I told myself I'd dance around camp like Kevin Costner. The Chocolate Brownie Trees are still there. Keep the content coming. I like to watch a few the night before I hit the trail. Gets me in the mindset. Thanks!

When deer walk alone there is only one reason. there family is DEAD. There children have been eaten. there parents have been shot and hunted. her husband has been killed by a car. She was all alone. It's a sad reality. for all deer! God bless you baby deer. Sorry for your loss!

That's cool Dixie. Reminds me of another vid on YT (Backcountry Angling Ontario) where a couple was hiking into a lake in northern Ontario last Winter and had a three legged red Fox follow them for a few kilometers then finally peel off after about an hour. Too funny.

No big deal. The deer's doing the same thin you are, in the same place you are. It's aware that it's options for getting to where it wants to go are a lot harder than the path. If you'd of gone uphill or down, it would have walked passed you and never looked back.

LOL Do not worry female dear almost never attacks a human, he got nothing to attack with, non paws, non horns, non predator teeth. I would just try to pet it and hug

The deer is smart and wishes she would get out of its way. If you were headed in that direction would you walk on a path or walk through vegetation and fallen trees?

They apparently like to lick pee for salt content. Ken and this show a video where the deer are waiting around campsite and acting crazy like for the pee.
