we repair a previously diagnosed P0171 in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata 3. 3 V-6 and then we verify the repair. Please Thomas: Had a Mazda MPV a while back that had a big vacuum leak. after the repair I watched the fuel trims. It too had a momentary rich spike during the relearn. I think that the ecm does a recheck if you will. it had lean in memory, but now is seeing rich, so it takes away fuel but decides to add fuel again to see what the front O2 does. Once it saw that the front O2 went back to rich, it knew that it could ignore the old learned fuel map.
Hope that made sense. at least that's what made sense to me at the time. :)

I am from Brazil and around here this car is called 'Azera'. Same 3. 3L V6 engine. We also have the 'Sonata', but it's engine configuration is different (2. 4L 4cc. Great video, by the way! I'm having the same issue on my 2011 Azera. Already changed the faulty O2 Sensor, but it's still with the 'Check Engine Light' on. The strange thing is that the car has never had a malfunction, always ran great. Dunno where to look anymore. Anyhow, that strange crank noise comes from the chain tension of the CVVT system.

I'm thinking it might be due for a tune up with the plugs and wire/coil boots. The cold start sequence sprays a lot of fuel, and weak spark will have a hard time igniting the rich mixture. Not to mention a lot of times those rear plugs and other stuff underneath the manifold will not be touched since the car left the assembly line.

Dang -22 Degrees! And I thought it was Cold here in Seattle. Hey quick Question I'm going to School to Work on Cars in the Fall of this year. And my goal is to one day open my own Shop, mainly to be my own Boss. My question is, as far as clientele and business goes, is it better to be in a State where the Weather is Cold?

Duplication of the complaint has always been an issue. I try to make my customers aware of that, especially if they are having intermittent issues. You fixed A problem, but not THE problem. As long as the customer is aware that you are not a magician, the door is open to find the issue, if it presents itself again.

You have a great community going here man. I will put my 2 cents in, I remember that the car was missing at one time, I believe you have bad plugs specially on the bank that had the bad O2 sensor because of the fact that they were getting too much fuel intermittently! And again thanks for sharing.

The Short fuel trim was negative after replacing the O2 because its main purpose is to keep the Long Fuel Trim as close to 0 as possible. Remember how positive the Short Trim was before? It's adjusting it now that the O2 is giving correct readings. That of course if you didn't erase the computer's memory.

Mr Brown had it right. I could use the practice Eric so hows about next time you let us brainstorm the diagnosis before you tell us the fix. This online automotive course you have is right up my alley - a little too short tonight I have lots of pupcorn left and barely finished a beer. Well done

Wouldn't open o/2 heater set an immediate code? Scanner Danner would know. U guys r going to have to get together. My two favorites. When u light the hot wrench and hit the impact, he would respond with. Is that electric impact ground side switch and what's the duty cycle on that torch?
