I have a look at a 1996 Ford Ranger that came in with rotter rear upper shock mounts, a broken exhaust hanger and the dampener on the rear driveshaft was rotted off! Time to make this rapid Ranger a little less rattly!

Hey Eric, you ever watch Mustie1 on Youtube? He lives up in your corner of the country and has a favorite undercoating he makes. He uses chainsaw chain oil and some other highly tacky oil and mixes them then he heats them up in a microwave and sprays the underside of the car with an air sprayer. Says the trick is to drive around on dirt roads so the dirt soaks up the oil and form a shield against the salt and corrosion. He's had good success. He fills the frame, body panels and doors. You might not get along with him though. He likes to rebuild old Volkswagens.

There are a lot of things to consider on where one is going to live in the US. If I were to consider living on that side of the US I would allow for expensive replacement vehicles every 6-7 years. That means I would never really own a car or truck, just the monthly payments. WOW! Can't imagine how much it would run me to lease a vehicle taking into consideration you must return it in the same condition you rented it. Woops the rust ate through the floor boards!

My long bed XLT mid shaft bearing took a shart so that had to be changed, The rear of the truck went down because both rear spring perches rusted loose and the springs were rubbing and banging on the underside of the bed. Got those fixed and traded it off for a new FLEX which is a great car. Lost my arse on that deal.

Wife had a 94 B3000 that had the same set of issues. I also did the front shock mounts due to rust. was scary when the front one let loose and the shock hit the ground at speed! It was a rusty PA truck, and left shortly thereafter.

I had a '97 Ranger with the same rustbelt-itis. I am glad it was red so you kind of missed seeing all of the rust-out places. The whole underside was an iron mine of tac-o-nite. I turned into an extra-cab money pit.

Eric, I cannot believe NAPA makes a replacement bracket for the rear shocks given the factory unit was riveted. It makes you wonder how many of they sell as most of those trucks have been crushed.

Thats one of the many quarks that I dont like about owning a Ford everything is RIVETED ON for whatever reason, my dad always said cause theyre cheaper than bolts so that makes sense.

In regards to welding under a vehicle do you have to use a fire blanket or anything to prevent sparks near gas/ other flamable fluids? I'm a welder but never under a vehicle

How many problems did that thing have? You cant resist the spray grease like me too. oh and yes I love my tools as well, wouldn't be without power tools

Well, I feel a little better now. I have a 96 F-150 with a broken rear shock mount. I haven't looked at it yet but I don't think I'll vomit when I do.
