Sell your car for free with Carwow: 3 Series drag race let’s goooo! We’ve got our hands on a BMW M340i, M340d & 330e, and they’re going head-to-head to see just how different the performance is of a petrol, diesel & plug-in hybrid 3 Series. However, they’re not all stock - each car has had a stage one tune! So let’s see how they compare. Starting with Mat in the M340d Touring, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six diesel that can now put down 430hp and 850Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1, 945kg. Next up we have the M340i. It’s equipped with a 3-litre straight-six petrol, and it now puts down 470hp and 630Nm. Like the diesel power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at just 1758kg. Then finally we have the 330e. It’s equipped with a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder coupled with an electric motor, and these combine to put down 400hp and 700Nm. Power is only sent to the rear wheels only via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s also the lightest car here, tipping the scales at scales at 1, 740kg. So the M340i has the most power, but will it be an easy win Or could the diesel or plug-in hybrid snatch it There’s only one way to find out LET’S RACE!

Not similar at all to the above as the generations are all different, but I went from a tuned e91 335d to a stock f30 330e. I was surprised at how tractable and flexible the 330e is with a full charge, Even with just a single bar, you really feel the eBoost. I don't drive in such a way to get the full fuel saving on the 330e - bought for torque as I wanted to move away from diesel. But I do like that almost all of the sub 35mph driving I do is on electric. But lord knows how it works out the MPG as the car reading is way lower than my own calculations - does it only include miles driven on ICE and excludes those done on electric alone Also, on a decent motorway drive I can get back 2 bars of battery power back too.
Instead of tuning the 330e I bought a 2004 MR2 as a second car - slower, yes, but so much more engaging than a modern Bavarian brick. New dilemma - tune the 330e or look at 2ZZ engine swap for the MR2

So the tune makes the 330e 1. 09 seconds quicker to 402m than I was able to do with my stock 2020 330e (measured with dragy on the street. 1 second in 402m is a lot: )
Still regretting that I got rid of mine. Early models in Europe had the 330i ice engine so tuning them was rather risk-free as they are de-tuned on the 330e. Have read somehwere the ones being produced in Mexico now do have the 330i engine as well.

1: 36 WHAT IS THAT A working M model gear shifter on a non M car how are people doing this Clearly not from factory since it has M modes listed and exhaust selection. I need to know how people are doing this
I remember Kies motorsports trying this years ago and it stopped working 3 weeks after he installed it, so I’m not sure how this is even a thing.

330i is faster than the 330e 0-60. The 330i has 258hp while the 330e has 292hp but the 330i on paper still does 0-60 in 5. 2sec whereas the 330e does it in 5. 4sec, probably due to it being heavier. Would have loved to see the 330i in this comparison, very underrated and sounds beautiful as well.

My wife runs a 330e as her company car, it’s only doing 26 miles pure Electric but most town miles mean we only put petrol in monthly, previous car was 330D and honestly I have always been surprised by how economic due to our lifestyle, and how quick the 330e feels especially for A road overtake

I do not understand the point of having three tuned cars
it’s not like the average customer is going to consider the tuning potential of the car they are buying
I would prefer if all three cars were standard
this way you can really tell the difference between each car from the factory

Hmm I read the dashboard. The car that was lampooned had 117, 000 miles on the clock and would have cost a fraction of the modified cars but was not appreciably slower. Findings: Dont bother with BMW as they all look big ugly and you are overcharged for basic features as extras.

One big question: Why do you translate Daniel wrong all the time Maybe you could send him his german parts out of the clip to translate them for you Like at 10: 40 he didn't said I'm back at the top. He DID said: The 'Kickdown' came in delayed.
I'm just curious

This will really upset the diesel fan boys, I just hear them now. I get 70mpg for 0. 3 seconds slower. Spend all that extra money for the 40d then sits at 50mph trying to squeeze every slither of economy out of it, while watching a hybrid fly past

6: 15 jump start on the right. She needs to leave a random amount of time before dropping her hands. 3, 2, 1. Go. Not just 3, 2, 1, go because you can second guess the go and get the jump. Anything below 0. 200 of a second is a jump
reply

Daniel jumped the first start by the skin of his teeth.
The M40d did reasonably well considering all the disadvantages of being a station wagon and heavier but when it came to showing how to use torque properly.

What’s the point. If you want to truly show the difference in the engines then they all need to be either an estate or saloon and all have xdrive or not. What’s wrong carwow don’t you have the budget.
reply

I’m already bought a 330e
The best car in the world (speaking about compromises)
Family saloon
20km/l in journey
300hp drift car for fun
Pure elettric for everyday trip
!

That m340i should have gapped the 330e HARD.
It barely pulled away on the rolling start so that tune on the 340i is terrible or it’s no where near 470bhp if the 330e is 400hp.

reply

great test, Ive got a 340i and also a 340d and the 340i has averaged 34mpg with the 340d at 44mpg. When ur in the mood the 340i is best but for everyday the 340d wins.

Bring back drag races where BMW's compete with other car manufacturers' comparable products.
Who/what affected Carwow so that they changed their fair game practices

reply

carwow the first lunch of the 330E was on D gear not S, he should have pulled the grear lever to the S sportgear box and boost it a little with break and gas.
reply

M340i is the ultimate car. For mortals. It fills everything you want. Its classy, sporty and refned. The choice of someone that enjoys a driving machine.
reply

It would have been great to have a standard M3 in the mix too just for comparison. These tuned cars cant be that far off the performance on the M3 now.
