Sell your car for free with Carwow: The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is one of the most powerful small EVs you can buy in 2024! But is it any match for the all-new Tesla Model 3 Performance Well, they’re about to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile to find out! But first, let’s take a look at the performance stats. Starting with the Hyundai, it’s powered by two electric motors which combine to produce 650hp and 770Nm of torque. Due to the two motors, it has four-wheel drive, and it weighs in at 2, 235kg. As new, an IONIQ 5 N costs around 65, 000. Next up we have the Tesla. It also has two motors, so just like the Hyundai, it has four-wheel drive. The two motors combine to produce 460hp and 650Nm of torque, and this new Tesla tips the scales at 1, 839kg. From new, it costs around 60, 000. So the Hyundai clearly has more power, but will it have enough to beat the all-conquering Tesla There’s only one way to find out for sure LET’S RACE!

Thanks carwow Mat and Richard for the great video! Someone had to pit these 2 electric speedsters against eachother! So your results make sense, because the Ioniq N has a power to weight ratio of 29% (27% without the 10-second boost) vs the Tesla's 25%, but the torque to weight ratio is 20-21% for the Ioniq N, whereas the Tesla has 35%. That's probably why it took off quicker off the line initially but then got steadily passed.
However, what would be interesting is to see how the US version of the Model 3 Performance fairs against the Ioniq N, since it's got a power to weight ratio of 28% (510HP, 50 more than the UK version, which is much closer to that of the Ioniq N. They're both quick cars, but I'm surprised that Tesla reduced the power of it's EMEA Performance Model 3s vs the US ones.

I'm so glad Ioniq 5N exists as a competitor in this category.
The model 3 Performance is nice but it's interior is so sterile and devoid of personality.
You do get fart noises with the Tesla, but then again are farts really better than having options like:
- simulate gears,
- simulate engine sounds,
- configurable modes for power delivery, torque distribution, steering and suspension
- power boost button
- head-up display
- G-meter other data to log driving
Not to mention stuff like stalks, physical buttons for ac and important functions, Apple Carplay/Android Auto support

The Tesla is the best performance value car on the market, making it the ultimate daily driver, period. Having owned both the older M3P and the latest model, I can confidently say that no car on the road can keep up with me at traffic lights. Most Tesla M3P buyers, 99. 9% to be precise, don't care about track performance or Nurburgring Ring issues like brakes or battery overheating. With that said, the Hyundai doesn't stand a chance against the Tesla, and anyone paying a $40K premium here in Australia for it is making a poor choice.

Why is everyone so impressed with this The very easiest thing you can do with an ev is make it accelerate quickly.
The bigger the battery the easier that gets.
I'll be more impressed when we see them still going strong at 20 years old. Or able to take on 100 miles/minute of charge. Or able to go 1000 miles on that charge.
Not knocking it because having power is always nice but so far as a normal day to day car goes its a long way down the order of things we are actually going to find useful.

What's that's saying about tiny minds being hypnotised by fake trinkets. I'll give up 200hp for 400kg any day of the week. $12)K in Australia for a Hyundai. Eff off to hell and back. Can't beleive Watson is laughing he won. Hardly a resounding victory for so much more power and torque. Tesla 3 was faster well into lose your license territory. And BTW I would never buy a Tesla. Can't believe you put up the fake rev meter for the fake gearshifts on the Hyundai. Oh dear god.

Hyundai/Kia makes top notch Evs. But a mixture out of the pure practicability of the Ioniq 5 and the sheer aerodynamic efficiency but inpracticallity (boot) of the Ioniq 6 would be the absolute best seller in the EV market. So excellent Ioniq 5 is not bought because of its consumption and the excellent Ioniq 6 not because of its bad trunk concept. Why that

Quite dissappointed that the non-US Model 3P only has 460hp vs the US version that has over 510hp running the 1/4 mile at mid to high 10s. I really don't understand why Tesla would do that ( because of batteries. I've been a Model3P Enjoyer for the last 4 years, but i guess it's time to change to something else now.

Just shows how bad the Chinese made M3P is, the US version with the Panasonic batteries whips the Hyundai ionic5 N at all speeds including from a standing start. We are ripped off outside the US and given inferior batteries, Tesla should fix this problem by offering the same batteries worldwide

The rolling race with manual gears was surely lost due to him using 1st and not 2nd. He basically salmmed the throttle bounce the limiter and had to change gear, instead of linear pull in 2nd. He said it loses power and that might be true, but at least use the right gear for the comparison.

Europeans get significantly slower M3P from Shanghai with Chinese, I believe CATL batteries than the US version with Panasonic batteries. It was interesting to see the difference. My us model does 10. 9x quarter mile every time with above 70 soc on decent street pavement.

I think fake gear change may be implemented to all EVs through OTA software updates. Just jerk the car a little bit so ICE fanatics will be sold. However they need to do better than that digital noise Hyundai makes. 90s car racing games had better engine noise with more steps.

I’m actually surprised something kind of comparable to the model 3 Performance and it’s a SUV. Still $10k more but for an SUV. I wonder how it would do with thermals for longer runs. EVs tend to get pretty warm after pushing hard for extended periods of time.

I've driven this ioniq 5n. Drives like a cathedral, the sounda are like 90's arcade games, the ride is without any mechanical feel, everything is artificial. tesla is still more like a car. If I had to choose, it would be tesla, no matter the stats
reply

Before I watched the race, I swear i thought the Ioniq5n would crush the Tesla. but seems like Tesla is the better day to day car if you want to be a red light warrior. as there are no roads where 114mph is legal (except autobahn)
reply

Awesome to see the Ioniq 5 N actually pitted against another similar class EV! I was actually surprised to see it win. If Hyundai can eek out more than an estimated 220 mile range, then I would definitely consider buying one.
reply

Cool runs. Is the US spec m3p faster!
Also the m3p costs $54990 where Ioniq 5n is $66100.
That's before any credits. Not sure if they both qualify for the same amount.

reply

I think American Tesla will make Hyundai. There are more productive elements from Panasonic. And it’s unclear whether the Ionic 5 battery will last until the end of the warranty.
reply

So what's with the fake petrol engine sounds while you are driving these 2 electric cars Are they really that boring that you need to make them at least sound interesting
reply

Synthesised engine noise and gear changes I do not need after 10 years of EV driving, to each their own, kudos to Kia for getting near the benchmark Tesla, more EV choice.
reply

Funny how everyone always seems to hate on artificial engine sounds but when it comes to Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, they all let it slide because the car is just too good.
