Sell your car for free with Carwow: It’s time for another epic petrol vs electric drag race! We’ve got Mat lining up in his Audi RS7 Performance long-termer, and we have the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N alongside him! You may think this is a strange match-up, but these two contenders are actually more similar than you may expect. Let’s take a closer look at the stats. Starting with the Audi, it’s powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can produce 630hp and 850Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels, weighing in at 2, 065kg. As new, it costs upwards of 133, 000! Then alongside it we have the IONIQ 5 N. It has two electric motors, and combined they put down 650hp and 770Nm of torque! Being electric it’s pretty heavy, tipping the scales at 2, 235kg, and brand new it only costs 65, 000. So the IONIQ may have more power, but it’s up on weight and well down on torque! Will that prove decisive There’s only one way to find out LET’S RACE!

5N technical brilliant EV but from the optical side horrible in comparing to the Audi. The 5N ist good for short distances, short hard acceleration but for long rides I would definitely prefer the Audi. From the power side, they both have more than enough. By the way, the breaks from the N5 are not very solid at high speed but they are much better than for example Tesla breaks. I do not understand why most BEV's have poor breaks, especially when we speak about high powered BEV's who are able to drive fast. When a car is able to drive fast it should also have breaks who are able to handle this. Nothing is more dangerous than driving fast with poor brakes.

Two things stand out: 1) In the races I didn't notice any mention of the Boost button that gives you an extra 40 horses for ten seconds; 2) I seem to remember that there is a mode you can use with the Hyundai that allows it to brake better than in other modes. And one bonus thing: I'm glad you clarified that if the Hyundai is doing gear shift impressions then it isn't using it's full power.

I don't know why anyone would want to buy an electric car and have a fake rev counter and fake rev noise. True petrol heads aren't going to want that nonsense, and normal people wouldn't care anyway. Just seems like a really bizarre design choice. Hopefully it doesn't become a trend; I hate all this fakery (fake exhausts, fake air vents, fake engine noise. what's even real anymore)

Sorry, I don't care what the result is, That Ioniq is a mess of a design. It's going to look horrible the longer you own it! It will be like looking at Suzanna Reid GMB in 5 years' time and thinking, did she really wear that on live TV What were they thinking! The RS7 performance will just look better and better, and if I want it to go a bit faster, I'll just put a stage one map on it.

So if this was at a set of traffic lights I think a Smart car would beat the Ioniq to the next junction. The Ioniq driver would still be sitting at the lights while they worked out how to set up the launch controls system. It would be very interesting to see how fast it is if Nick had just floored the accelerator without bothering with all the setting up of fancy drive programmes.

I'm actually very curious i got a question. I wanna know which car is better. And we need to see this drag race. Porsche 911 Turbo S vs Audi RS7 Performance. I know the Audi RS7 will lose. But imagine if the vehicle was tuned, pushing out 730 or 50.

My benchmark for a fast car is still the E92 M3, which covered the 1/4 in 12. 4 seconds. Considering that these things are pushing over 600hp and have AWD, it makes me think that the lil Bimmer was simply sublime for its time.

as an audi fanboy, im extremely disappointed. idk what Audi engineers are even doing. I mean we were already lagging behind BMW & Mercedes but now Hyundai! Audi really needs to upgrade their line-up especially all the sedans.

so, giving the car to a guy that has no clue how to operate the EV
to give a chance to the audi to look good! :-P
BTW: it was a physical gearbox vs a simulated gearbox, not a V8 vs an EV

More boring boats. Supercars and hypercars would be great. If it has to be VW group Bentley Bugatti and Porche non SUV plus no more Bmers please! All other Supercar brands welcome!

The Ioniqs performance will drop off as it drops below 60% and the Audi will just get slightly faster as it drinks the weight. Also its brakes are unsurprisingly terrible.

The problem is our rs7 gives power but fuel cars dont give constant same power while that trash ev Hyundai is fully electric gives full 650 hp constant all the race
reply

It's a Jeep SRT! Can go 0 to 130 in mere seconds but 10, 000 ft to stop from 60. Classic example of why huge power should not be in the hands of the average driver.

That Hundai - such a disgrace. I mean, the point of a performance electric car is to destroy any ICE car. And this one barely beats the behemoth from Haudi(Socwagen.

Love the videos but I won’t watch the ones with EV shit in them you want to race them race against other shit box EVs, leave the real engines race each other
reply

I would love to see some auto cross style races. Straight line speed is great, but isn’t the best indicator of how fun a performance car is to drive.

4/50 vs 10/100 u want to compare value. Twice the price.
Hyundai only 70k too u cud afford new tires
Value for the win
Hybrid future is Genesis

I’m not sure if it is me or the guys in wow are repeating episodes I hope they understand it’s unfair to get money and income from a repetitive episode

An electric that's slower at lower speeds and catches up at higher speed is actually a new thing, hats off to hyundai for that top end pull
reply

Brake test: the hyundai probably has EV tyres, optimised for low RR, thereby automatically suffering wiht less grip. Check the brand/pattern
