ALEX FOR THE NA The original 1990 Mazda Miata is an automotive legend. Today I'm reviewing an NA Miata to show you why the Mazda MX-5 Miata is such an icon in the automotive world. David Levy: Doug, I love watching all of your videos. I thought that I would give you a couple thoughts on the Miata. My wife and I bought a 93 Miata new in March of 93 for 16, 400. It was the first time that we could afford a third car, and we've been having fun with it ever since. The Miata came in an A, B, and C package. We got the B package, which included power mirrors, but not power windows. We still have the business card of the salesman that sold it to us (he was a great guy. never had to see the manager. Our seats are a great cloth that has held up really well since new. I agree with so many of your comments, but I have a different take on a few. The car has 116 horsepower, and while its not fast, it was really not slow for the day and the price range. The car is a traditional sports car, where lots of people can drive it at its limit. and thats really what makes it fun. You have to remember that the tires are really narrow on the car, so it isn't hard to break loose. The stance of the car is low, and my 18 year old son comments that the car is also cut low. It doesn't have high doors or framing for side impact protection, and that gives you an amazing connection to everything around you. much like the generation of british sports cars before it. A few comments on the quirks and features. The Miata came with an ashtray in the middle, but Mazda sold different accessories to substitute for the ashtray. Mine actually had a dual cupholder substitute in a box in the trunk. The fuel filler release and the trunk release are in the center console because of theft. You have to think about the fact that in this cars era we weren't too far past when people would steal gas out of your car, so it was desirable that way. The headlights go up in the fixed position because they were trying to emulate the Austin Healy Bugeye Sprite, from which a few design cues on this car are from. The dual sunvisor is a practical method to get sunvisors to fit. The compression on my car is the same as it was when I bought it new, which is hard to believe (we drive the car a lot every summer. I haven't had to replace the clutch because the engine doesn't generate enough power to wear it out. The other fun fact is that for those of us that do these things ourselves, none of the work on this car is hard. Thank you for your videos. I hope that you have as much fun making them as I do watching them.

I had a '94 for 11 years and 120K miles, and I would give it a 9/10 overall. No, it is not big, nor is it fast (though it is plenty fast enough, and no, you can't get a sheet of plywood in the back, but it is exactly the kind of plain, understated design I prefer (at least it WAS, for its first 15 years or so, and everything, from the engine through the transmission, shifter, suspension, brakes, top, etc, all work great (and last practically forever. I enjoyed it so much that for the first 6 mos. or so, I felt literally HIGH every day I was in such a good mood I eventually got a bit tired of it (hard ride, too much sun in SoCal, getting old, had no garage, and was moving in the direction of an SUV at the time, which I needed for my work, so I let her go, but I AM getting the bug again, can now actually afford a 3rd car, and am planning to get another It will of course be a nice, low-mileage example of either the 1st or 2nd generation (1989-2005, the later ones got a bit too elaborate style-wise for me, probably a Mazdasports version (with a turbo, and I will probably keep it forever.

The Miata was designed in CA by a Japanese American for the U. S. market. Then built in Japan and shipped over here. The thing that made the Miata work was it had all the things the past sports cars lacked. Like MG's, Spitfires, Austin Healy's, Fiats, etc. Most of those had no A/C, no electric windows, no power brakes, no power steering or cruise control. All were available in the Miata. The MG size cars were a bit smaller, and it would have been a challenge to install air conditioning in those. Your rating system is solely personal, I'd give much higher marks in many of the categories you brought up. Just your opinion, and like other things, everybody has one of those.

The subwoofer In the seats is more like the old school shakers on vibrating things that were popular in the early or mid 90s. I don't really admit any sound and shake. Speakers really sucks these days which is usually used as I can. Daily driver for beater car, maybe a weekend car whatever the hell you want to call it, but they're usually modified Moorhead arrests, is a pain in the ass if you want to put in some aftermarket seats like some Bride or Sparco's (to match a nice red Sparco or Momo steering wheel, since early models don't have airbag's and it'll still be legal to change it out. illegal to remove a wheel with factory airbags, btw)

I have owned two Miatas years ago. My favorite one of all time is my second Miata built in 2000. No more ugly pop-up headlights and a very nice long hood. Mine was dark blue with a tan leather interior and tan boot cover. It looked best with the top down and the boot cover on. Similar to the BMW Z8 in my opinion. Very reliable, but after 8 years - 24K miles - it started to rattle quite a bit on the highway. Sold it in 2009 and got a 2003 Mercedes SL500. The Mercedes was much more solid but a nightmare to maintain. P. S. - My wife learned how to drive with this Miata and she really loved it. Now all other cars are just too big for her.

I have a gold 1992 model mx5. Ideal for fun driving on quiet country roads. But also beats anything heavier around any sharp corner, when I can accelerate into and out of the corners. The laws of physics keep any other type far behind Top up for highway speeds on main roads until reaching a desired quieter area. Then top down for more leisurely enjoyment of tree lined avenues, paddocks, hills, sights sounds and smells of the natural realm. Perfection.

Paint bad and so I'm plastic dipping black, and I broke back plastic window. forgot to un-zip, shite. love this car. love it. love it. love it. weekends along hwy1 and ocean, and cut up through redwood trees. better than a psychiatrist Cheaper too 30 mpg. Handles fantastic.

I've had a '90 for two years. Doug is absolutely correct. At 5/7, I fit really well. The only thing that hurts is my left elbow. the armrest is so friggin' hard. It hates hills but it really does corner like it's on rails. It's a Lotus Elan/Triumph/MG that runs and runs. Feels like it's made of paper, but is super durable and easy to fix. And, it's got air conditioning.

I just bought a 1991 MX5 hardtop convertible special edition miata with 119, 202 ORIGINAL miles a sweet old lady sold it to me for 2, 000 and it looks like I bought it straight from the show room. So I believe I got a pretty good deal and it has the husband name on a little plaque and it says 478 out of 4000 on it
