The i8 too, especially because of the fact that it looks really cool and has a very interesting carbon fiber implementation on the body, so it s basically a BMW experimentation that actually went into production.
Same for the LC. Absolutely handsome, naturally aspirated V8, well appointed. It will be incredibly desirable.
Some additions/ disagreements:
1. BMW F80 M3: I think this one looks way better than the G80, has good tech, and the special models have good power. This has the potential to be really the car to watch out for.
2. BMW i3: Its just another weird BMW experiment that somehow made it into production. Also it was really popular for a few years. But now, not so much, with people saying it s overpriced and outdated. So it is following the trajectory perfectly I believe. I don t expect them to be worth a ton of money, but they will appreciate very well.

I feel like with the new enthusiast cars the tech will play a bigger role. with those older 90s and 00s cars the tech wasn't significantly different from say the late 70s, with the difference being maybe the type of music interface. However, with cars released in the last couple of years you get screens and features that might seem extremely old in only a decade, and when 25+ years rolls around might even be unusable save for really dedicated enthusiasts. With those cars that have just a giant screen for most of their controls, would it become necessary to be a hobbyist programmer in order to work on them?

Let s not forget about recessions. Sometimes the timing or economic circumstances were just poor, and would affect sales numbers negatively, even when cars were considered to be good. Anyway, great topic, and I always like checking out cars that are hated on even though they had great reviews in their time. I think hoovies 456GT is in that category. People are amazed how it drives, because they just think it has to be aweful when prices were low. 550s were the same story. Massively undervalued for a while. S2000 you mentioned went through the same. Press and owners loved that car

Im going to argue doug on this to a degree, while a lot of the cars may have been unpopular in their day saleswise, to a lot of people who grew up with them in games and by watching top gear and stuff, they were extremely loved and popular culturally, they didnt sell because most of us weren't old enough to buy cars, now that we are older and have jobs that pay us decently enough, the prices have followed along as more and more of us are getting old enough and earning enough money to buy these cars

People are going crazy over everything that's Japanese at the moment here in central Europe. The cheapest Japanese enthusiast car you can get at the moment is the NA Miata and they're starting at 10k for decent examples. If a car is somewhat rare it automatically gets more expensive even if people don't acutally buy them. I'd get it if people would actually buy them but I see so many ads that are listed for months and months and prices don't move an inch.

I was surprised when Doug mentioned the Lj two door wrangler unlimited, I bought mine in 2012 for 8k and it was my first car. It had 94k miles and looked like it hadn t been off-road in its live. I still own it and have modified it a little bit (suspension, tires, steel bumpers, winch, lights) it currently has 122k and I ve been offered up to 25k for it. I was surprised for the number and even tempted but it was my first car and I plan to keep it for ever

On the affordable end of the spectrum: Lexus GS350. And I will go out on a limb and say the 2011-2015, 4th gen (L10) but before the full hourglass grill. Low sales killed this model last year. The GS350 is a handsome sedan that offer a nice combination of comfort, performance in a rear wheel drive format with a 300 HP naturally aspirated V6, and Toyota reliability. F-Sport models may do best among these later GSs.

I have noticed this also, with 2000's tuner cars. 350z/370z, 8th gen Civic si, Acura RSX and TSX, and many many more.
People liked these cars but they weren't as popular as your GTR's Supras RX7's etc. But as those cars were scooped up, people looked at the next car, and the next car, and it continued and uts difficult to find almost any 2000's tuner nowadays for a cheap price.

A buddy of mine bought a nice used 80s rx7 in high school for a couple grand. He pretty much trashed it to the point of no value. Now that car is going for 15-25k. Do you think he could a) Afford it as a student? b) Treat it that way at that price point? Certainly makes some cars more rare/valuable when people don't take care of them because they are cheap.

Most of the cars listed were never really accessible to common ppl. Maybe the S2000 but things like the Ford GT and LFA were always cool to ppl that couldn t buy them. I ve personally had a long love affair with the LFA and the BMW 8 series but could never really dream of owning one. Even the new NSX and M3 are currently to expensive for most ppl.
