My Dad bought my Mom a 1988 Tercel, she only drove it to work and volunteering at the Hospital later in years the thing had a hard time passing the Smog test due to the carb. My mom kept that car until 2005, bought a Nissan Sentra My 1992 Mazda Protege, besides a leaking valve cover and a drive belt breaking it ran good. After a accident I just rode my bikes, I got the Tercel I drove it to work at the time 70 miles round trip 6 days a week, I ended had to replace the radiator, fuel filter and fix some leaky power steering hoses, but it 186, 000 and it was almost 20 years old by then I sold it for 500 buck and rode my bikes again. The tercel I was glad to get rid of it, it was slow as F, Funniest thing is I was having idling problems, so I didn't really want to mess with it, I took it tot the Dealership, I had just sat down in the waiting room, when the service writer came in and told they couldn't work on my car, they couldn't plug in their computer to it, so they didn't know how to fix it. I made a few snide remarks all those guys in their with SAE certification patches need to give them back and thy wanted to charge me, I said you wasted my time got in it and drove off, yea I did fix the idle problem the carb needed fixing again, I wish I knew about that weber swap back then.

It's hard to call a guy a fanboy when he's a fan of toyota. Sure it's one mans opinion, but its a toyota. I however do not agree with Scotty saying Suzuki is a piece of junk since mine is more reliable than my previous Honda civic. Plus there's a lot of other people posting their mileage way beyond 200k miles (some on a CVT. The brand is even whichcar UKs most reliable brand. Before they left the US back in 2013 they're #10 at consumer reports. Maybe he's referring to the non-japanese versions of suzuki. Or maybe to him if it doesn't sell well in the US it is automatically a piece of crap. Well Ford is even being sued by their customers due to engine catching fire and issues left and right. and americans still buy the thing lol I may be alone on this one but if any brand knowingly sold engines that could catch fire for 5 straight years, I'm never going to buy any of their stuff

Those early 80's Tercels were sold for 3995. They arrived in the Gulf States port in Houston and came with no air or radio. They were all pre sold on transit manifestos weeks before any deliveries to customers. Toyota cars were under a strict Govt quota at that time and the dealerships had to be a certain mileage away from each other. Dealerships added the air and radio if the customers wanted it that way. The final cost was still 4995. The delivery transit trucks would arrive, cars unloaded, accessories added, prepped for delivery and lined up. Customers would all come in to pick up the car they ordered. A typical day like that would be 80-90 deliveries not including trucks or used vehicles. Tell someone in a dealership now about those numbers and they will just look at you with their eyes rolling around like a slot machine. They cannot fathom that.

scotty has become the i hate this car company. blah blah blah. dont buy rams, buy ford trucks. blah blah blah next video dont buy (insert brand) blah blah blah. I totally disagree with the 2000-2005 toyota celica, it was the 1zzfe gt motor that always blew up due to poor piston ring designs, but the 2zzge was a solid engine and had lift and only really had problems with lift bolts broken and the oil pumps could be a little better. All in all they were a fair priced sporty 4 cylinder car that was fun to drive and afffordable. they 86'd celicas to introduce the scion tc and scion brand which were ok. i can agree with the other toyotas he mentioned but Scotty has become negative nancy car guy. i once enjoyed his car videos and instructional learning vidoes now just trash all the car companies

BEST car Toyota ever made was a 1977 Celica GT liftback with the old 22-R engine. Looked like a Mustang Mach 1. I put louvers on the back hatch. Turned heads. I LOVED mine. I replaced the wheels with Cragar 14 inch from 16 Handled curves high speed better than a Porsche with that simple modification. Had one of the first computers called ESP. You pressed a button and it would check all the main systems before you took offBought it used cheap. 700 bucks back then. Only needed a tune up and I put on 70, 000 miles from the 43, 000 that was already on it. Worst mistakes I ever made was trading it in for a Toyo truck in 87. Second worst mistake was getting married in 82.

I disagree with Scotty about the Echo and Yaris. We owned a 2000 Echo for about 8 years, and put over 200K miles on it. Yes, it was a little tinny, but a very solid and reliable car, with lots of room. We only sold it because it got very rusty here in New York's rust belt (Syracuse to Buffalo. I liked it so much that I bought a 2009 Yaris 3-Door hatchback for myself, because it's got the same engine and drive train as the Echo. I bought it used with 34K on it, and I've put another 90k trouble-free miles on it since I've had it. I can't speak to the others, but I really like the Echo and original Yaris (current Yaris is actually a Mazda 2.

Scotty, those lil Suzuki's may be weak and cheap and a joke to you but their engine is rock solid, my girlfriend drives one, it's 17 years old, has 600, 000miles you read that right, she drives it 80miles every day, rarely changes the oil only fills it up as it burns a lil from time to time, and that lil monster just keeps going, Suzuki engine's are probably more reliable than a good Toyota, only downside they are weak, but if it will get you from point A to B reliably it's good enough. You are my fav car mechanic by the way: )Keep up the good work. Greetings from Hungary.

The early 80's Tercel only ran as good as the road it was driven on, like many sub compact cars & that 30+ mpg carb was OK if maintained properly & was 15 minute type easy to remove, replace or service. Only blaring flaws were the terrible [recall] rear control arm assembly that rotted prematurely, cheap low quality bucket seats and the horrible split front wheel bearing system. The Tercel was improved with EFI, similar mpg, 4 extra valves yielding more HP & a larger chassis in the 90's before being replaced by the hideous Echo.

Booooooorrrr. ing, stop complaining, and don't buy a old car, get to know your budget, and get your money working harder and smarter to buy an affordable new car, depends more or less you pay for the models, no frills or luxury, but you will find that all brands of car make(good or bad as people judge. ) at least last for years without any problems and nothing to complain about it. Most importantly, trade in and replace one before it wore out and need a major repair as it may cost nearly as a new car.
